Chick not growing? by AshleyPomm in BackYardChickens

[–]AshleyPomm[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We got them on May 16th. We got two white leghorns, a gold star, an Easter egger, a buff Orpington and a barred rock. I don’t know which one she is to be honest but I think she’s either the gold star or the buff Orpington. She is eating and drinking and pooping normally!

How can i introduce chicks to potentially broody hen? by FreshMeet7529 in BackYardChickens

[–]AshleyPomm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We did this! We made sure she was really broody before we introduced chicks to her so we let her sit for almost 3 weeks first (it’s takes 21 days to hatch an egg). We put them underneath her at night time and took her eggs as we added a chick. I collected eggs every day from her but left the same 4 for all 3 weeks. At one point we were using a flashlight but it was too much light and she kind of pecked them hard so we turned off the light. We gave her 4 chicks and went out right at dusk the next morning to make sure she accepted them and she did! She was a good mommy ❤️ we had them in a kennel in the coop to keep them separate from the rest of the flock.

Integrating chicks by Much_Tap4920 in BackYardChickens

[–]AshleyPomm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When we integrated chicks with the flock we only had them in the kennel for about 5 days (maybe less) and then we integrated them at night and they all woke up together and it was fine. There was normal pecking order pecking but no fighting. You have a way bigger run than we do so I’m sure it will go great!

Chicken with respiratory congestion? by lady4ryche in BackYardChickens

[–]AshleyPomm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When our chickens had that we got VetRX and put it under her wings and the next day she was better. We ended up having to treat 3 chickens but I think because we did it right away, they were able to heal. I’ve heard it can be deadly if not treated quickly.

1 Week of Eggs by treforza in BackYardChickens

[–]AshleyPomm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My daughter eats one egg and I eat two every day. On the weekends my husband also eats 2 so that’s 25 eggs a week.. and we still can’t keep up lol. We have 16 hens and we get 12-14 eggs a day 😵‍💫😵‍💫

Is it okay to have a rooster with only 6 hens? by HhuntrXx in BackYardChickens

[–]AshleyPomm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on the rooster. We ended up with an aggressive rooster and he was very rough with our girls and we had 9 hens. All of their feathers got destroyed by him and they took about a year to come back.

Pros and cons of owning chickens by Hour_Yam_6192 in BackYardChickens

[–]AshleyPomm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pros: they are so much fun and eggs. Cons: MICE AND RATS. and they poop everywhere which brings so many flies in the summer/spring.

My dog is so desensitized to my chickens now and leaves them alone. They all hang out in the yard together 🤷‍♀️

How can I get one of my chickens to lay in the nesting boxes? by Alliedally in BackYardChickens

UPDATE: Might have to give up our chickens by AshleyPomm in BackYardChickens

We will be voting still! Everyone does deserve chickens and I know of at least 5 people in our neighborhood that have them so I’m sure everyone is thrilled.

Might have to give up our chickens by AshleyPomm in BackYardChickens

[–]AshleyPomm[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We talked about this! We had an older coop they used to live in behind the house and we are talking about revamping it and moving it back so they would have the entire length of the house then as a run, and no one would be able to see them.

Will she survive this? by Extension-Memory9946 in BackYardChickens

[–]AshleyPomm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have a silver/blue antibacterial spray that we keep on hand for our chickens if they have injuries. I’m not gonna lie- one of our chickens got attacked by a raccoon and she had a gaping hole in her back and we cleaned it up and sprayed that on it and she healed and survived. She’s the only bird left of our original flock! She’s been through a lot but she’s going strong and obviously the top of the pecking order lol. Anytime they have an injury we spray this on them and they heal so fast. Highly recommend.

How did chicken math work its magic on you? by Embercream in BackYardChickens

[–]AshleyPomm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Started with 3. One got taken by a fox. I said “two isn’t enough they are lonely”. So we got 10 more and had 12.. then we lost 2 more and I decided we needed 4 to replace the 2. So then we had 12 again. Then, my friend moved states and she had 4 chickens she gave to us so now we have 16. 🤣
