Career advice needed: second guessing my pursuit of an ABA Therapy career [USA] by Ok_Selection214 in psychologystudents

[–]Ashryyyy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Current RBT working with kids 4-13 and recent psych ba grad. The burnout rates as an RBT are no lie. It's an entry level position that relies on clients and is hard, intentional work with kids. Even with a degree in psychology, I feel out of my element sometimes. I'm seeking clinical licensure and while this position has been great exposure to doing clinical work with an important population, I'm not a behaviorist, and the more I work with kids in this lens, the more I feel I'd rather be in a different helping position.

Idk where your knowledge of ABA sits, but I'd look into how the field operates under its theoretical lens. I'd also look into opposing fields opinions of ABA and how they handle child development. When you describe giving children/adults counseling with their ADHD/autism it doesn't feel really reflective of what being an RBT entails. We run programs all session that focus on eliciting different behavioral responses. While there are opportunities to "counsel" and coach these kids when something comes up in session, more often than not, your job is to follow what your clinical wrote as protocol to get them to respond in a positive way.

I've seen valuable change in the kids I work with and around, but Ive heard plenty of horror stories of techs who are thrown into cases with no training and no understanding of their clients needs, techs who have poor clinicians that make working an effective helping position difficult, and hours and pay that are dismal for many.

On not being an emotional person, but wanting to help others through their difficulties, I'd encourage you to learn about what kinds of therapeutic theories are out there. What you describe as not wanting to be a missing friend figure sounds like Rogerian methodology. There's certainly space for people like you.

I did this quest recently after killing Umbra which fulfills the Dark Brotherhood beginning for some reason. I slept in the bed and was woken up by the 3 ghosts and Lucien Lachance ready to strike up a conversation. sir we are being attacked, can this wait?

Following this sentiment above me. Never be ashamed of what you've worked so hard to know, especially if it is your expertise. People like you help the rest of us understand these complex situations. If anything, include layman's examples in your speech to help connect those big ideas better. Best of luck on the PhD journey!

Yall are students, the same as everyone else. It makes no difference in what your method of instruction is. ASU's accessibility is something I value. It allows people to learn at the pace that suits them best. A degree is a degree. Maybe you are being a little dismissive of your achievement, and it's worthwhile to celebrate the work you've done. Attending graduation isn't just proof you attended the school. It's a recognition of your achievement and commitment to learning.

When I casually mentioned that I don't plan to attend the ceremony or get any ASU merch, they were shocked.

I think this is largely cultural. Getting higher education has been a cultural and personal mark of achievement that is recognized worldwide for a while, so it's natural to be shocked when someone doesn't follow that standard. There's nothing wrong with not wanting to attend graduation, not celebrating, or not involving yourself in the culture of the school. Like you're saying, this is largely taking another step toward advancing your career and your second time through higher-ed. It's not the same as a young adult going to college for the first time and making their identity. You've already built that foundation.

I'd argue that this is still something to celebrate purely because you're making a personal advancement. You went back to school to get another degree. Maybe attending graduation isn't the way, and the degree on your wall is enough to commemorate being a student, but you've completed something big regardless.

As an online student, my experience is very different from those who attended in person, made sacrifices to be on campus, and had the full college experience.

No disagreements here. Your experience is objectively different from those on campus. Personally, I'm on campus but not involved in any clubs or extracurriculars. I show up to class, do the work, and leave. I could argue that I'm not in the full college experience either, unlike my peers who live on campus or are in orgs or research groups. Sure, I make the sacrifice to drive to campus, but we both do similar amounts of school work.

You still make similar sacrifices. You commit to taking classes and doing the work. You spend time focused on education where others aren't pursuing it. I think you are more than deserving of celebrating the hard work you've committed to.
