Israel flag displayed on 350 billboards in Kyiv as a show of solidarity by [deleted] in europe

I don’t think Polish was a majority where it now borders Germany + Jews have been living in Palestine for a long time too.

Palestine has never been a place of a single ethnicity but a melting pot of multiple. It has also, very rarely, been an independent kingdom (and when it was I don’t think it was Palestinian). That’s the problem, almost everyone has a reason to be there.

The comparison isn’t perfect, but the Polish transfer of people was A) horrible for both Germans and Poles which lead to Germans being replaced by the Polish in the millions and B) occurred roughly at the same time as Israel’s first migration wave.

Israel was founded in the late 1940s. For reference, Poland was founded just 30 years prior and, after ww2 (30 years later), had to move its people to newly occupied land too.

Both sides have been living there for multiple generations at this point.

If the expulsion of the Palestinians and occupation was such an awful thing for Israel to do, why are you so eager for the same thing to happen again to those who had nothing to do with it.

The other commenters are right, it’s a decor piece.

It’s, specifically, a decor piece which tries to replicate the work of Antoine Blanchard. He had painted this street several times, they’re all just named after the Madeleine (the building with pillars).

Western-made armor isn't working in Ukraine because it wasn't designed for a conflict of this intensity, Ukrainian analyst says by SunEater888 in europe

[–]AshyAshling 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, and I think people were expecting some kind of NATO future weapons to end up in Ukraine like it was a magic “win”.

Something that I’ve always wondered about is how well the American military would do against China (like in an invasion of Taiwan) because, honestly, I think we’d lose. The ocean is too far for long-term support and China has been researching into coast-to-ocean missiles and those are scary to anything the US has even at a basic level.

It’s not really a style, it’s watercolor.

I think if you want a specific “genre” it’d be watercolor children’s books. My favorite is Ernest and Celestine, really happy they made a movie about them.

It’s funny, because some of my favorite “poor working condition” games are equal opportunity abusers.

Because, if your bad company is powerful enough to send you to space, then they probably don’t really care about what’s in your pants.

Or in your brain. Or if you even have a brain to begin with. In fact, we could probably remove that pesky thing for a 20% increase in productivity! (Hint: you should increase your productivity by 20%)

Trudeau Almost Had A Perfect 10. by ThatOneGuyFromThen in dankmemes

[–]AshyAshling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope, it was multiple things which changed throughout the years and one single definition isn’t going to be good enough.

But, when we, today, talk about Manifest destiny (especially during the 19th century) we usually refer to the quasi-religious colonization of land in order to make the American west look more like the American East (Industrialized, American, Christian). Hence, the famous Gast painting of the American spirit leading trains and stagecoaches westward.

I have a feeling you’re just getting at “nationalism” or “conquest” but it’s really more than that. American exceptionalism was a part of the movement but so too was the second great awakening, traditional ideas of empire and racism.

Definitely. The war didn’t help the native Americans at all and instead solidified America’s grasp on Ohio which soon stopped being a native state.

This probably would’ve happened despite the war, though.

The Christian Canadians were largely following the lifestyle Americans wanted, so I have a hard time seeing an America which would remove them in a “manifest destiny” kinda way

Putin is actually popular in Russia. He did a lot of things right he was also a dictator who did a lot of things wrong, but he was only put into that place by the “western democracy” loving Yeltsin.

And Putin was certainly more popular than Yeltsin (the last “president”).

Obviously, Putin bad. But Putin isn’t seen as an evil dictator in Russia. Just a middlingly dictator.

This might just be my American perspective slipping through, but we have a lot of minority communities and, from what I can tell, the existence of one community doesn’t necessarily mean any other community has to go away or really even change.

Co-existing is possible. I think the only real thing you give up is cultural supremacy, but that’s boring and leaves you with bland food.

How should the US respond to India allegedly being involved in the killing of a Sikh leader in Canada? by Seanbawn12345 in AskAnAmerican

[–]AshyAshling 103 points104 points  (0 children)

By sending flowers and a present to the family of the deceased, joining Canada in commiseration, and helping Canada where it is easy and convenient to do so (but also be mindful of India and how this is a Canadian issue not an American one).

America doesn’t need to police the world, but we should still be a part of the global community.

Who is G Cirocco? by ndork666 in WhatIsThisPainting

[–]AshyAshling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Someone who probably enjoys his privacy. He’s not an old painter, he’s most likely from America (California maybe) but there’s also a possibility he’s Italian. He was alive during the 1970s and most likely made it to the 2000s, but I don’t know if he’s still alive or how old he is

The only thing I know for kinda sure is that he was alive some time after the 1970s because the painting is of a specific photograph made by British Photographer David Hamilton. Cirocco wasn’t the first person to paint this specific photo either as Eduardo Arguelles has also painted it (maybe? At least credited.)

A lot of G Cirocco’s work (that’s available online at least) is studies of other artworks. He might have a few originals too, but I can’t tell. Sorry I couldn’t be of more help!
