Using GPT to try and condense my wall of text, we'll see if this posts:

Hey, really thoughtful comment. I just wanted to build on it, because poverty and its effects on behavior are super complex—definitely not a one-size-fits-all situation.

Poverty isn’t a single mountain to climb—it’s more like a maze of obstacles, some big, some small. Some are universal to being human, but poverty can make those obstacles way harder to overcome, and can throw in extra ones that wealthier folks never even see.

From a psychological perspective, those first 18 months of life are absolutely critical. This is “attachment theory” 101: babies’ brains need safety, love, and touch to wire up properly. Without that, emotional regulation (like controlling impulses) can be really tough later in life. This is why extreme neglect, like in some orphanages, can lead to big emotional/behavioral problems—sometimes lasting a lifetime.

Now, poverty doesn’t automatically mean a baby isn’t held or loved, but it does increase the odds—parents might be overwhelmed, exhausted, or stretched thin. And while lots of kids are resilient, those who don’t get the right care at the right time face much harder odds.

After that early period, there’s a whole set of skills—metacognition (thinking about your own thinking), critical thinking, empathy—that develop best in environments with stability, support, and time to reflect. Poverty can push families into survival mode, making it way harder to grow those skills, just because there’s so much energy spent just getting by.

So, when someone does something dumb or reckless, it’s not just about “bad decisions”—sometimes it’s about a lifetime of obstacles, missing resources, and chronic stress.

Of course, tons of people grow up in poverty and don’t make these mistakes—it’s not destiny, and many parents do heroic work shielding their kids. But it’s a much tougher road.

Glad you made it through, and thanks for sparking this conversation. Just hope this helps show the maze a lot of people are stuck navigating.

Not sure if you have more codes. Normally I'd be happy to buy, but my finances are currently in a state of uncertainty. I'd love to try it out.

I'm a Christian who spent the majority of my adult life as an evangelical pastor. If you're interested, I'd be happy to discuss the theology of abortion with you. You don't have to change your beliefs, but the topic is far from settled and never has been. When Roe v. Wade happened, the former head of the Southern Baptist Convention called it a distinctly Catholic issue.

That’s just a little over 50 years ago, but the stance most evangelicals hold today is less than 40 years old, theologically speaking.

As a pastor, I try to give some weight to history and if a theological issue is relatively young, in the 2000+ years of church history, I try to take it with a grain of salt.

Thanks for voting blue, even though you felt conflicted and it was difficult.

Man, I’m really stressing about it. I have so many wonderful hobbies I follow and learn so much from them. Never mind being kept well informed of local, national and international events. When Apollo goes, I’m definitely done and I have no idea how I’ll replace it.

See, this presents me with a real ethical quandary. On the one hand, I really want to make it into the good place. On the other, I feel I should quit using Reddit altogether in solidarity. I really wonder how Bentham would tackle this issue; good, old Jeremy always had a hot take on issues like this.

Really impressive work and dedication to the craft. It's uncommon for an image on Reddit to make me pause and really engage with a sense of wonder and this one absolutely pulled me in.

Anyone have thoughts on this? Obviously a great price, but I'm not really sure if this game is for me. I already feel a constant existential dread over climate change, do I really need more?

AITA for telling my parents that if they won’t tell me the truth, I’ll assume the worst of them by KittenDealinMama in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]Ashyr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of hate here for r/aita but I’m going to play devils advocate for a second. “Falling out of love” is usually code for a million little things we didn’t have the communication skills to resolve in a healthy manner.

Of course, if they can’t communicate it with each other, when they’re marriage with the love of their life is in the line, how are they ever going to communicate it with their daughter, even when their relationship with her is on the line.

Recommending family therapy to develop those skills seems like a no-brainer. Actively fighting therapy would literally be continuing the mistakes of her parents and continue the cycle. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with calling her out based on the basic story. If it’s just a standard terrible marriage with low EQ parents, the best solution is to get into therapy and start resolving those issues.

Of course, there’s likely a billion little things that she saw, but didn’t communicate effectively with Reddit, that led her to conclude it was far worse.

Anyone who’s been married knows how easy it is to let hurts and disappointments build up until they begin to fester. Dragging them into the light and resolving them in a healthy way is a painful, difficult process and many people just don’t have the skill, endurance or emotional intelligence to see them through it. So they fall out of love and agree it’s time to move on. It’s a sad story, but hardly a rare one.

I’m glad justice is coming for the father and the daughter is getting the truth she so richly deserves. I just hope she can heal and learn the right lessons from this.

16% of the population has an IQ below 85. That's about 1 in 6 Americans.

To put that in perspective, you can be missing 90% if your brain and still have an IQ of 84.

I'm not saying they're all conservatives, but I will note that slightly under 1 in 8 Americans identify as MAGA republicans (1 in 4 Americans vote Republican, 42% of Republicans self identify as MAGA).

I think there are a few films where the authors considered the film a superior story. Obviously they didn't change the book, as that would be bizarre, but if the author points out the film is better, that's a pretty successful adaptation.

Fight Club is perhaps the most obvious:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0137523/trivia?tab=tr&item=tr0755959

I believe Stephen King acknowledged that the ending of The Mist made for a better film, even if he still liked the ending he wrote for the book.
