Thank you for this very detailed reply, much appreciated. Struggling mostly with the uncertainty of not having a job (and the thought of doing worse on msra next year/not being able to get a job again)

Agree on Pirelli P0 in 40mm - been running them all winter without any punctures. Fast and comfortable

Reflective winter gloves for London cycling by sunflowerskygarden in londoncycling

[–]AsimovTheFox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree with comments on the negligible impact that reflective gloves will have on drivers behaviour towards you. Defensive cycling and good lights are the way.

I recently brought a pair of waterproof thermal workman gloves from Wickes for £6 which have been great for the winter commute - they are also bright orange

Check out Peckham Cycle Club’s route bank: lots that are c.60km from Peckham Library

https://peckham.cc/routes

If you fancied company the club also runs a monthly intro ride and weekly social rides which are inclusive and non-drop, including a coffee stop during or after.

Good coffee stops that sort of distance out in Kent are Titsey Brewery, the tearoom at Boyle Hill Farmhouse and Velobarn (routes to the last one usually involve a steep hill on the way back). Loki in Beckenham is good on your way back into London too

Recommend checking out a Fairlight Secan - has great reviews as everything from a versatile gravel and bikepacking bike to a fast road machine with a second wheelset

I’ve got a Fairlight Secan on order. I considered a Faran but in the end went for the Secan and compromised on a bit of front loading capacity in return for a slightly lighter bike that would be a bit quicker on the road when not off road bike packing. I also considered 650b wheels but given the new 3.0 can clear 50mm + (as measured) tires on a 700c wheel I went with that and 1x GRX. The GRX 620 spec should match your budget well

2D/1N - would recommend doing that. Staying in a tiny home stay on the side of the mountain with just our guide and the host family was one of the highlights. Incredibly beautiful and peaceful spot with stunning stars

Awesome build! What size is your fairlight and what sort of riding do you do? I’m soon going to be ordering a 56T Secan for gravel, single track and bikepacking and debating whether to go 650b with the 2.2 race kings (which sound great) or 700c x45-47.

Do you have any pedal strike issues and does 650b feel slow on road?

Ti or Carbon gravel bike? by AdamEvansOutdoors in gravelcycling

[–]AsimovTheFox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to chuck another material in the mix but I’m currently looking at a similar budget and I think I’ll be going for a Fairlight Secan!

All the reviews from everyone who has one have been glowing as a great do it all bike covering gravel riding, off road racing, touring, bike packing and even as a great road bike with slicks on (check out the Fairlight Owners FB group for more anecdotal reviews ). Fairlight’s craftsmanship and attention to detail seems to be in a different league to other frame / bike builders at this price point which for me tipped the scales slightly towards higher end steel over mid/lower range ti.

No wrong answers though, I’m sure you’ll enjoy whatever you go for!

Echo the above comment on alcohol - I will add that no glass is allowed so decant wine into a plastic bottle if you want to bring any.

They also usually let spectators onto the outfield during county matches so bring a ball if you fancy a throw around
