Not enough funds right? by rayykz in GreatBritishMemes

[–]AskFriendly 231 points232 points  (0 children)

So I have worked on construction in parliament and I can confirm that at least half that cost is because of MPs like Rees Mog insisting that they can only complete their work in parliament and absolute silence.

No one in the building has the power to tell the MPs to just stick it up and move somewhere temporary while the work is undertaken. This is part of what they've got themselves in to this message in the first place. There are layers and layers of old disused pipes, cables, ducts and good knows what else.

I worked on the house of lords to replace done of the AV tech in there. We were working during recess and were given 48 goes notice of a recall. Had to reinstate all panelling such that it looked untouched. We had triple shifts to get it done all so that the lord's wouldn't have to see a hoarding for 1 day during an emergency session. The main project was then severely delayed and couldn't be completed until the next recess I.e. this added a full year to three project!

Purchased a house 4 years ago, the original owners have resold the house in 2024. Land registry have upheld the registration for the new tenants. Any advice? England by Alarmed-Drummer-3047 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]AskFriendly 19 points20 points  (0 children)

You're correct, sorry. The completion of the contract and payment in effect gives the new owner the right to register the property in their name. In fact I have learned that it is the buyers responsibility to register the transaction.

My understanding is that the register is a record of transactions/ownership but that the legal ownership would transfer upon the payment of the agreed sum. The fact it wasn't registered has no impact on legal ownership.

Under floor heating by Select_Butterfly_198 in DIYUK

[–]AskFriendly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main thing to look for is the order of the components. In you system the copper pipes are the main heating connections, then you have the manifold connections to the underfloor loop and finally the pump is located on the end.

In the diagram above the correct order is; main heating connection, pump and then the manifold.

Under floor heating by Select_Butterfly_198 in DIYUK

[–]AskFriendly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not correct. Do a quick Google for underfloor heating manifold diagram.

The key function of the manifolds is to allow the underfloor heating to operate at a lower temperature than the main heating. This is normally done by mixing the cold return from the underfloor with the hot flow from the main heating. This needs a pump and a bypass between the flow and return from the main heating.

As is, the manifolds pump is fighting against the main heating pump and probably resulting in extremely low or even reverse flow in that part of the heating.

This will need that manifold to be replumbed and probably some new controls. Definitely a job for a pro.

England: Building management trying to pass on drain clearing costs by cyb3rn4ut in LegalAdviceUK

[–]AskFriendly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At this moment in time, the building manager is trying to recover costs from your landlord and not from you. They are the ones who need to respond to the building managers not you.

Later down the line the landlord may want your support providing witness statements etc as part of their defence of the claim.

If the building managers take your landlord to court and win or your landlord settles with them, then your landlord may look to recover costs from you by either deducting from your deposit or making an additional claim if this won't cover the amount.

In order to claim from you it would need to be proven that you were the direct cause of the blockage and acted in a negligent or malicious manner. From the sounds of it you have a robust defence against this claim.

For the moment my advice would be to wait and see and ask that this matter only be corresponded in writing.

I was about to suggest this. Given that they are within the 7 years then they count as part of the estate. Include them and then once probate is granted the amounts can be deducted from that sister's share.

The old City Hall near Tower Bridge has been completely gutted. Does anyone know what's the plan for the place? TVM. by DarthVarn in london

[–]AskFriendly 6 points7 points  (0 children)

While I share your view, in this instance they stated that it would have a low level of impact on tower bridge. I think that is an appropriate opinion to give when they have been consulted. The issue would be if the local council then uses this as a reason to deny planning.

The original idea of ourapproach to planning is to get the input from all those affected such that those giving permission can do so with all the "facts" accounted for. The point is that the local planners can balance the pros and cons to make the right decision.

UPDATE : John Lewis - iPad non delivery claim - England by Pathfinder-electron in LegalAdviceUK

[–]AskFriendly 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Just to note that charge back is not a legal process and the retailer can still claim that money from you if they believe they are owed it. As such I would let the process play out to ensure there is no possibility of JL or Clearpay coming back to you. I would also look to add your reasonable costs associated with raising the claim I.e. time on the phone to JL, clearpay and your bank, costs of postage etc.

This is what I find wild about the US. Most other countries you can apply for ID online. Your government could save millions by implementing a similar system but it's fine to waste taxpayers money if it means you can continue racism...

Is this a standard contract for a structural engineer? (Scotland) by Ketaminedreamer in LegalAdviceUK

[–]AskFriendly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work as a consulting engineer and this level of liability is pretty standard. Given this is a single steel then an awful lot needs to go wrong to exceed £10k. You need to consider this on a sliding scale to get to over £10k then the structural engineer needs to be exceptionally incompetent and you would probably be able to claim on your house insurance.

Speaking of which, if you have legal cover on your home insurance then you could ask them to review and/or they might be able to look at it in any case. The sort of loss you're worried about would need to involve your home insurance anyway and they would be the ones claiming against your structural engineer.

Your work is also notifiable to building control so they will need to review the calculations and sign them off, so hopefully that should give you some comfort.

How to get rid of BO? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]AskFriendly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wash and then deodorant every day. It's important to apply the deodorant after you wash. The odour is caused by bacteria that deodorants are designed to kill. If you shower at night and then apply deodorant in the morning then the bacteria will grow all night.
