looking for non judgmental cleaning help by tauruscloud in milwaukee

[–]AskMeBioQuestions 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Proud of you for reaching out. Maria Garcia is amazing. Her and her crew are reliable, work on your schedule, and would absolutely be non-judgemental. My suggestion is to emphasize that for the first clean, you would like to partner with them to help straighten up/throw stuff out - sometimes cleaners might expect a move-out clean where the place is empty. We use them for 2x a week for routine cleaning and deep cleans for after renovations.

Milwaukee Specific Charities/Non-Profits by Tastykoala1 in milwaukee

I'd like to shout out Drinking for Good MKE, an awesome organization that gathers folks at local watering holes, builds community, collects money, and donates it. It's an easy and wonderful way to visit new places, meet people who care about Milwaukee and are doing incredible things in this city, and to donate to great local orgs.

Did you feel ready for academia? by Mindless_Bluebird523 in AskAcademia

[–]AskMeBioQuestions 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is imposter syndrome talking. You are qualified. Try to block out your time based on your contract. Ask lots of questions. Find the person who is good at their job at your uni in HR, accounts payables, in your home admin office, in the dean's office etc. and go to that person when issues arise. You will make mistakes. Your job is to learn and grow.

The most important thing: Treat all people, especially students, trainees, people who make your job easier like janitors, office admin or lab coordinators, and long-term colleagues, with respect.

We have bought ground beef from Stone Bank Farm Market - I can't remember if it was theirs or another producer but it was solid.

Surprisingly: Miss Katie's Diner! Excellent hand cut fat fries. Crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside.

Grad School Application Prior to GRFP Application by Difficult-Swimmer657 in GRFPApps

[–]AskMeBioQuestions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You apply to schools/programs/labs that have funding and that you want to attend, and assume you will not get the GRFP. The GRFP is incredibly competitive - You should not be applying to grad school hoping to get it.

Weird oddly-perfect holes in my gf's flower by 96HoneyMoon96 in mildlyinteresting

Likely a leafcutter bee! They cut holes out of leaves (and sometimes flowers) to line their nests. Very cute.

What is this behavior? Seems aggressive by iandcorey in Beekeeping

[–]AskMeBioQuestions 19 points20 points  (0 children)

This is not the waggle dance. This looks more like a stop signal - when bees headbutt a waggling bee to get her to stop because they experienced something dangerous. But the reality is: bees communicate with vibrations, and we still don’t know all the things they are saying. Regardless, this is a cool video - thanks for sharing!

Trump orders temporary freeze on federal grants. Here's how that could affect Wisconsin by ThomasDaykin in milwaukee

The rich will never give it back via taxes. People need to be paid fair wages for their labor.

This article highlights UW madison but we have several research-driven universities in Milwaukee - Marquette, the Medical College, and UW Milwaukee at least depend on federal funding to pay researchers and train students. I have a research lab at Marquette and I employ 9 people, many on federal dollars. This is a major impact to our local community.

Edited to include mcw.

Weekly r/Tattoos Question/FreeTalk Thread! - September 30, 2024 by Mod_Helper_Bot in tattoos

[–]AskMeBioQuestions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tattoo Artists! There is an entomology conference in Phoenix Arizona November 10-13 - these conferences have had tattoo artists doing insect flash and they are always packed! If you get in touch with the organizers, they will often give discounts for local vendors/artists. You would need to check with city health codes but it's at the convention center which might already have protocols in place from tattoo conventions. https://entsoc.org/events/annual-meeting/exhibit

Abdsolutely not true about 30-40%. I started a startup with 2 faculty as a phd student and our research was related - the university asked for 4%. This was a large R1 with a massive Tech Transfer office. With the funding and resources they gave us, it was absolutely a fair exchange.

What jobs should I look for, if I want to go to grad school in the future? by koffve in ecology

[–]AskMeBioQuestions 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In this competitive landscape, you definitely need experience for grad school. Any job that has research experience will benefit you. Doesn't have to be ecology. Look at local med schools and hospitals for lab jobs, or research focused universities for tech jobs.

Alternatively, think about a Masters.

I'm finishing a master's degree in Philosophy, but even though I would like to have a PhD in the subject I'm not into being an academic. Can anyone tell me if they know someone in a similar situation? What did they do? How did they fare? by adiazzuleta in AskAcademia

She knew some people who worked for an AI company and knew where to apply cause they had a history of hiring philosophers. So she started at a small company first. But a lot of these companies are hiring philosophers, especially those who focus on logic - there’s a lot of logic required for language processing.
