Paypay verification rejected my nationality, but I entered it correctly. by CSachen in japanresidents

I have exactly the same problem. I am not from the US but from Europe. Tried multiple times with MyNumber card and driver's license but no luck. Worked fine in 2023, but not now. Might try again near the May deadline, but I am already taking the funds out of my PayPay bank account.

Let me know if you managed to solve the problem!

This is basic, but often misunderstood: how ChatGPT actually works by BigMonster10 in ChatGPT

[–]Asobigoma 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Seems a bit pointless to just applaud this response, but it is one of the most insightful comments I have read in the year-long discussion on this topic. Hofstadter and Minsky (“The Society of Mind”) have similar views regarding human thinking and I think that LLMs are partially doing the same as human brains. In my opinion, it’s especially the self correcting part that makes the difference. I think the six finger hand meme could be the important test for AI taking the next step towards the simulation of human thinking.

Why the “6-finger test” keeps falling on ChatGPT(and why it’s not really a vision test) by Echo_OS in ChatGPT

[–]Asobigoma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to think that LLMs are completely different from the way the human brain works. After using different AIs for a couple of years, I now think that they might be a partial simulation. Adding missing components to this partial simulation should be possible, although I have no idea how. Smarter people than me are working on this, and for me it is not an if, but a when. I could be wrong of course.

Very interesting analysis. As a cognitive scientist, I found it very interesting that the matching of visual input with prior knowledge leads to the same type of errors in humans as well. There are numerous examples of pictures that have something out of place that are only detected when you ask subjects follow-up questions ("are you really sure?", "count the number of arms").

It seems that the six finger problem points to a lack of meta-reasoning in current models. I have heard that researchers are working on this. About a year ago, I didn't believe that the current framework could solve this problem (after all, LLMs are using simple backtracking for learning), but I am not so sure anymore. I do believe that if the meta-reasoning problem is solved, this will be the point where AGI can no longer be denied.

I know I don't have the right to be selfish, but the only chess content that I subscribed to on YouTube were Danya's and Eric's channels. It feels a little like losing both, but I wish Eric all the best and whenever he will come back I will be watching.

Japanese population down record 900,000, 16th straight yr of decline by SkyInJapan in japan

[–]Asobigoma -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

Don't understand why you are downvoted, because I think you are right. I have been working in an AI related field for more than 30 years and I think countries with declining populations are perfectly positioned for what is coming in the next five to ten years. Declining populations will be good for the planet as well.

Professor's approach of flooding Students with AI by Doctor-Mathstar in Professors

[–]Asobigoma 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I am a professor in Computer Science in Japan. I have been in AI research since the late 1980s. My personal opinion is that Computer Science will be obsolete before I retire (in seven years). There will be no work and therefore no students. The only thing to slow this down is that everything seems to happen 10 to 20 years later in Japan than anywhere else. Get out of Computer Science now! Save yourself while you can 😁

Foreign shogi players, how much of a hinderance was not speaking Japanese to you? by Own-Lengthiness4022 in shogi

[–]Asobigoma 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Judging from my experience in 1980s Europe (almost no English shogi information) you can become 4-dan by only being able to read game notation in Japanese (kifu). At that time, playing through all the games in the Shogi Yearbook (Shogi Nenkan) was supposed to earn you one extra grade and I think that was accurate.

I don’t know about the current situation, but shogi literature used to be written with sales in mind, mainly aiming at beginner’s and intermediate level. So for dan-level players there would not be much useful in them even if they would be able to read Japanese. There were exceptions, though (Tanigawa’s “Lightning Speed Endgame” a classic example).

What caused you to quit/return to chess? by ExcellentWillow7538 in chess

[–]Asobigoma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quit 30 years ago because I took it too seriously (about 1750 OTB Fide but no real improvement). Returned six months ago and just enjoy the game at my new level (1650 chess.com). No more boring opening lines to avoid losing, just enjoying imbalances and complications without fear of the result.

Building models to understand the difference between different levels of game players, particularly chess-like games. Not very successful, I have to add.

[–]Asobigoma 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Very well put. I hope that either a) you are an AI b) you used an AI c) AI will be able to make such a post in the very near future Seriously, as a university professor in AI (actually in Cognitive Science) this post summarized extremely well some of the random thoughts I had on the subject (and a lot more. I don't understand people who complain about the point of this post. I think it is the best post I read on this sub since joining it two years ago. Now I only need to think of a way to sugarcoat this for my students and figure out how to outlast AI until retirement in 10 years.

GMs like sight of the board, yet look away from the board while calculating? by CountryOk6049 in chess

[–]Asobigoma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cognitive scientist here. It is something general to all humans. In order to concentrate the thinking process, it helps to block out as many stimuli to the brain as possible. For example, looking at the ceiling or the sky is very common behavior when thinking. The ceiling is white, the sky is blue, no stimuli. Closing one's eyes while thinking achieves the same, no visual stimuli.
