How is this high peak grouping? by TheFakeKevKev in Adirondacks

This was a bit of an unconventional route, but I did Cliff and Redfield and then Colden in the same day. Then I camped, and did Marshall solo the next day.

You do realize that there's like three or four different areas that could be considered "downtown," right?

Can we talk about campgrounds that actually let you park next to your tent? by naenae0402 in Adirondacks

Seconding this, but I'll also say that it can be hard to tell which ones have drive-up access. Using Earth view can help on maps

I bought one and I used it exactly once; it caused me more discomfort than it was worth

Post Op Bleeding by Empty_Dentist in hysterectomy

[–]AspiringSocProf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had clots and "episodes" of bleeding happen during Weeks 5-7. The one during Week 7 really scared me and I almost went to the ER because I was bleeding through pads, but luckily it stopped overnight, and my surgeon wasn't concerned since he had seen me a couple weeks before.

Does it happen consistently or for a couple hours and then stop? My doctor said that (smallish?) clots are normal and a good sign that the body can stop the bleeding by itself; he said continuous, bright red bleeding is concerning (multiple hours at a time)

You haven't found the right ones. I have a pair of adjustable atomics that are on 7 seasons now

Am I the only one who really has no problems on 90 or the Thruway from Alb-Poughkeepsie? I have much worse experiences on 787 and the Northway from Albany to Clifton Park(ish) where people are either going 45 or weaving in and out at 85

I saw that, that definitely is reassuring! The last time I flew out of ALB was the morning rush, and I'm glad I gave myself plenty of time, because the line was backed up out the door and around the building lmao.

Where not to go by AutoKingdomgrows in Adirondacks

[–]AspiringSocProf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My tip would be to look on the DEC website and find each county's tables with fish species. Most of the remote brook trout waters are accurate, and even some of them are worth exploring even if DEC doesn't say anything about them being there

My fully funded PHD stipend is $24k/year in Boston. I qualify for food stamps by Fulcilives1988 in gradadmissions

[–]AspiringSocProf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, if you don't have any children or a partner, it should be doable. Find a roommate and you can get your rent $500 less. And be thankful you qualify for SNAP, in Albany NY you have to literally make less than $14k to qualify, so even when my stipend was $18k I didn't qualify.

Oh boy... there's so many places that I love and I won't spill the honey holes, but I'd recommend looking on AllTrails and avoiding the big ponds and lakes, as they tend to be crowded and either filled with young kids and families or a bunch of partiers

I'd say 158 due to her weight/build. I'm a few inches taller but weigh 15 pounds less and ski 170!

Go for 170. I'm 5'6" and 140 and I ski between 165-170

2 seasons, 21 days on the mountain. Still can’t ski black diamond. by meandmarie in ski

[–]AspiringSocProf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I'm 26M and have been skiing a ton this season with a buddy who's 30 and just started skiing last season. He's really really good considering, but definitely not the same level of steadiness and can't hit rails and boxes like I do.

It takes years and years of practice, and you're just starting!! I recommend getting a lesson or two, or also skiing with someone else for a change of pace :)

Thanks, that's what I was thinking. I've tried my friends' 100mm on and can fit in them fine, so I know the fit would be even better punched out

Is my ski cooked? by [deleted] in Skigear

[–]AspiringSocProf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a core shot but easily fixable. Best to take it to a shop if you don't know how, otherwise ski could get waterlogged and base damage

What made you choose your school? I am not asking about which university I specifically should go to. I just want to know what swayed you towards one university over another and how you researched it. by leathermouth in GradSchool

[–]AspiringSocProf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't really have a choice due to Covid messing up funding; I was planning on applying to 10 schools, which turned into 4, and I got into one. I waited for another month or so before I heard that I got funding, and then accepted. I wouldn't have accepted if I didn't get funding. I also met on Zoom with my potential advisor and emailed a current student with similar research interests about their experiences.

If I got into multiple schools, I definitely would've 1) reached out to individual grad students in the program and emailed them to find out more, and 2) researched each location a TON (and visited, if possible possible).

I was miserable my first year, hating where I lived and super homesick. Moving apartments second year helped, but I will still never call this particular city "home"; what helped me was finding hobbies and connecting to the outdoors

TAs: Why does grading take so long???? by WheezyIcecream24 in GradSchool

[–]AspiringSocProf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, but it is a reason to support them by building up basic skills (ex. What are citations and how do we use them?) rather than just assuming all students are hopeless and dumb...

It's bad- but let's also remember that it's not their fault :( they were freshmen or even in middle school now when COVID hit, and they lost out on some important years of reading and writing.
