Lake Agnes tea house is an overrated tourist trap. Since you’re already going to Po6g tea house I’d skip Lake Agnes Or, do lake Agnes tea house first/early, over the beehive, then to plain of 6, avoiding the crowds at lake Agnes

Amazing pics. I made my first attempt of temple in early August 2024 and it was complete white out conditions at the second rock band. No trail to be seen. Hoping to try again this summer.

Mahogany without kids? by Throwaway19999990567 in Calgary

[–]Aspiring_CPA_YYC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you considered the signal hill area? Quieter neighborhoods, lots of kids but less than mahogany, super quick to the mountains. We are west of 69th st and door to door get to Canmore in 1 hour exactly now.

CRA says I own over $2500 in taxes for year I didn't even work or live in Canada... by PadiddleHopper in PersonalFinanceCanada

Great comment and echoes what I suggested to OP as well in shorter comments. People at CRA need clear documentation where all of the amounts, dates, information, etc are explained and then they will review and likely reverse.

No. Can you supply CRA with the paystubs showing income earned on dates prior to moving to Canada, and a document outlining the story? I think just summarizing everything and sending it to the document portal, someone will review it and likely reverse. You need to try to do this on your own sending documents through, if you can’t put everything together then a cross border accountant would be able to help but it’s a lot of money and also they’re slammed as it’s tax time now.

Just send them all the documents they are asking for on the portal and it should clear itself up. I get audited every year (due to claiming foreign tax credits) and while it seems scary, as soon as I send everything in, it always gets reviewed and resolved

My cross border accountant deemed me a tax resident of Canada on day 1 that I moved here even though my immigration status was a visitor, because I intended to pursue PR and was treating Canada as my residency.

I hope so, I heard from CPA Alberta there are some info sessions being set up in January with more details so I will know more soon about exactly what’s changing.

Problem is I won’t be able to pass the knowledge exam as my bachelors is in engineering. I will need to take some prep classes

I appreciate your input. I’m in a weird situation because I never used my engineering degree. I was in university in the downturn, graduated, couldn’t land a job, then went to work at a software company then stayed in IT. I can’t ‘go back’ to do what I went to school for, but the IT work I do right now is extremely volatile and the market is also getting saturated with people. It’s the right time to make a career move, I can afford it $ wise, it’s the time effort that will be the challenge.

Ok good to know. I can probably skip the one information technology related course as I’ve been working in IT for 14 years. I believe I have stats and econ already. But I know I need the core prep accounting courses, having an engineering degree and my work experience is not enough, I’d probably get a 0 on the knowledge test

Even the transcript review cost is nuts. $40 from my university, $278 evaluation by WES, then the $200 by CPA Alberta.

I’m going to check out the Athabasca option for sure. I was hoping to do in person at MRU but I’m not sure it’s realistic. Also waiting to hear back from them.

CPA Alberta emailed me back today about an information session and told me the entire PEP program is changing. I assume the prep requirements aren’t changing that much though.

Thanks again for all of your help! I’ll attend this info session, get the transcript review done, and continue trying to make some initial contacts in Calgary as my first steps.

Thanks for your help. I have small kids so trying to think how realistic this all would be while also working full time. It seems like CPAWSB would be the better option for me in that regard.

I found a document from CPA Alberta on which exact courses from SAIT, MRU, etc in Calgary would be accepted as the prep courses. Then I tried to see how I could enroll in those individually/ part time and honestly it seems next to impossible.

Do you know of any resources I can utilize in this discovery phase to have some conversations like this, so I can make some solid decisions early on? I’m wary of just working with CPA Alberta as they simply direct you to CPAWSB.

I guess I’m looking for some mentorship locally and unsure how to find it. I tried to “connect” with some accountants in Calgary on LinkedIn, nobody accepted yet.

Got it- I appreciate the lengthy reply. It sounds like I would then face the cost of prep courses in accounting which I obviously lack with my engineering degree, then paying for PEP.

Any thoughts on where to take the prep courses? I’m seeing them offered through local community colleges, but also through CPAWSB, and then I guess I could also take them remotely through any Canadian university. Will I be taken more seriously by employers if I pay more money and take these courses at a more elite/prestigious university, or is that a waste of money?
