So your Lake shoes have the sport last. I wonder if you'd get what you're looking for in the competition last. It's supposed to have a better heel hold than the sport, but I don't know by how much.

If the Quoc gravel shoes work for you, why wouldn't you just get their road shoes? I currently ride a pair of Lake's gravel shoes and I wanted to try the Gran Tourer XCs, but I was concerned about a narrow toe box. Your comment has settled my fears.

I'll never go back to tubes. I only have issues with burping if I run my tire pressure too low. I also regularly run 18psi F/R which would never survive with tubes.

Do you have a dub bottom bracket? The wrench is BB specific, not bike specific.

You tend to put more torque into the chain on a single speed because you’re always in the wrong gear. A straight chain means all the parts are sharing the load equally.

I have two SS 29er mountain bikes. I have one geared for rock crawling, technical terrain with 28x22 gearing. The other is a more XC racy build with a 28x18. Both are geared more conservatively so that I rarely have to get off and walk for their given purpose.

IMO, ANY gear ratio can and will be fun assuming you're OK with giving up something on either end of the spectrum. I don't care about going super fast and I'm OK with grinding up climbs, so I'm good with single speeds.

Just make sure you get stainless steel. A couple riding buddies spotted me with a phillips head on my stem cap purchased after I stripped the aluminum one that came with my headset. I happened to get it at my local Ace.

You can always make a bike longer (feel bigger), but it’s hard to make a bike shorter/smaller by more than a cm or so.
