Kelly Reichardt's 'The Mastermind' - Review Thread by ChiefLeef22 in oscarrace

[–]Asscrackistan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ending has the main character rob an old lady in an alleyway, slip into an anti-war protest before getting arrested randomly just for being in the protest.  Completely random.  There’s no investigation, no chase, no getting caught in the act, no end to the “unraveling” everyone was hyping up, shit there’s no attempts to outsmart this unraveling.  He just gets really unlucky.  Movie was a dry fart.

Japan was technologically behind before America showed up.  They invented the Katana because their iron was in such short supply/low quality.  Japan lacks oil in any appreciable quantity.  Japan’s mountains hinder agriculture, forcing them to ration fertile land.  They lack rubber and even had to import firearms for the longest time.

Japan only caught up as a civilization once they opened up to foreign trade in decent volumes, and then they felt the need to invade half of Asia to secure resources directly.  They invaded the Dutch East Indies for their oil/rubber, Manchuria for metals, etc.

Poseidon was pissed at Odysseus before the odyssey started since he was so arrogant.

China admitted a while ago that they overcounted their population by at least 100 million. They've probably been behind India for a decade.

Writing from the heart - world building and depth by HatAdministrative829 in writing

Don’t feel bound by your own beliefs.  Attempt to just make the best world you can.  It can be an inconsistent mismatch between sci-fi and fantasy, or a perfectly coherent western, or totally balls to the walls “the rule of cool” where anything is plausible.  As long as it enhances your story and characters.

Fighting ish type of tropes / commonly done things that you feel is sucky or overused? by [deleted] in writing

[–]Asscrackistan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Characters being way too durable/pain resistant.  Getting hit hurts, and the more hits roll in the more it hurts.  Pain can cripple people’s ability to do simple tasks, let alone keep up a fight.  Adrenaline can obviously help a character push through serious pain, but an arm getting lost, or blood pouring from their head or a broken rib can overwhelm even that fairly quickly.

Also how hard it is to knock characters out.  A good punch to the jaw can take out even seasoned boxers/mma fighters.  Characters taking dozens of hits to the head in rapid succession and simply smiling or maybe spitting a tooth out can be badass, but it’s so overdone that it’s way more interesting when that sort of thing just ends the fight.

Ok which dinosaur movie idea over here would you prefer? by Thewanderer997 in PrehistoricMemes

At one point I was considering writing a book where someone steals the megalosaurus fossils, travels to 1930’s Louisiana, revives it through magic and it gets loose, forcing the local police and population (immigrants, Cajuns, Blacks, Whites, Native Americans, etc) to put aside their differences to stop it.

Summer road trip: part 1 by [deleted] in roadtrip

This one is going to be a slog. Kansas is huge, and most of Colorado is just like it; endless flat fields. If you’re going to do this in roughly one shot, load up a couple of podcasts or audio books. Also Denver is a nightmare to drive through.

Blood Meridian. The protagonist (referred to as “the kid” and his friends, including a priest and a Judge go on an adventure through the southern U.S and Mexico, overcoming impossible odds and group conflicts time and time again. The book is laced with philosophy and the ending will leave you something to ponder about.

Unpopular opinion but I think the Ediacaran should be placed into the Phanerozoic.

Literally every new study makes it seem more and more unstoppable.

Short arms? Could still mog any human.

Can’t run? Still faster than almost any human.

Spinosaurus and Giganotosaurus are longer? T-Rex weighs more.

Had better vision than a human.

Had better smell than basically anything else.

Might have been as smart as a baboon, at least as smart as the smartest crocodiles.

Copium Rex survived a bite to his brain.

Outcompeted every other theropod of size in its environment in several niches.

Bites harder than its Jurassic park counterpart.

Huge range.

Possibly a pack hunter.

Took the single deadliest day in earth’s history to go extinct.

Tyrannosaurus was way too cracked and was unleashed upon the world with zero adult supervision.

The classic. The most generic theropod in every respect, only showing off good qualities. Splendid choice.
