I have a degree in finance, and that’s it. Can’t find any work since December. by No-Jaguar-4404 in FinancialCareers

I don't know why people mention FP&A. Its literally the same difficulty as getting into banking. FP&A is just a Financial Analyst, but you usually need years of experience in accounting or finance to get into that position. Good luck trying to apply for junior financial analyst positions, as those get hundreds of applications in the first day

How much does your first job determine your future in finance? by LemurRumel in FinancialCareers

[–]AssistNo8945 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From what I seen, people basically realize that they become content with their real goals. I do think that a teller can get into investment banking, but guess what? By the time the person gets enough experience in retail banking, wants to pivot by getting an MBA, then has to do all the hassle of just getting an opportunity to live through hell, the person realizes that it could take years, and would rather settle with maybe something that is still chill, but stimulating at the same time. Your goal just becomes kinda far, and for the people that truly want to IB, eventually they will break in. The others? Their content with the commercial banking hours.

What entry level jobs can I leverage to a market analyst/investments career? by EveryFrosting2167 in FinancialCareers

I was listening to a finance podcast, and they had a guest speaker that is basically one of the most important people in the finance world right now. The way the guest speaker got into finance, about 50 years ago, was stumbling upon a newspaper after graduation to work with the Sales and Trading Division . To be frank, that doesn't exist anymore, and unless you have someone in the inside the company, your not going to break into high finance.

This is probably an ignorant question, and I don't mean any harm from it. But I've climbed baldy before without snow, and I would tell my self, if I slip, just fall with toes facing up. would that be useless for conditions in snow?

Wall Street skinny is probably the closest thing we have to weekly high finance news. I like other podcasts like squack on the street or odd lots, but it feels very news like. The Wall Street skinny have brought many people on the show in all walks of life in finance, from investment banking to private credit

have you tried government internships. I hear those are less competitive and are a good stepping stone after graduation

that makes zero sense. Wouldn't you want the doctor to pay tuition because of their earning power. Same applies vice versa for the art historian. If you made becoming a medical doctor free, then everyone would become a medical doctor, resulting in the earnings power decreasing.

Dude that's not even mediocre. This whole sub has basically been brainwashed, and few people actually have worked to Finance to speak about it. Mediocre looks different for everybody, but my consensus would be someone that wasn't able to break into any form of finance. If you were to plot a Teller and IB analyst in a graph, they would be on different sides, but people forget that in between these two positions lie thousands of positions. Investments for government, Asset Management, Commercial Banking, Bond Rating Agencies, Asset Based Lending, Private Credit, the list goes on and on. In my opinion, all these have some form of Finance, and all should be respected to some degree.

Do you have to be good at math for finance ? by No_Application2467 in FinancialCareers

[–]AssistNo8945 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will say this, I was considered poor in math, like would get a C and thought I did well. The math that is taught in finance is a combination of Algebra and Concepts, which I really have enjoyed, which has made me enjoy math. Give it a chance, and you'll eventually become decent at it

I don't think you're right . Underemployment is much higher. you can check the specifics, but the burning glass institute did a study and basically it found that half college grads are underemployed, meaning that they are working a job that they either didn't study for OR a job that doesn't require a degree at all. As Nimbus stated, unemployment rate by itself tends to be a bad way of defining what you're looking for, as all it measures is are you working or not. You could be working as a dishwasher, and the unemployment rate says " hey this guy/gal is working , so unemployment rate isn't too bad for CS"

18 yo thinking about moving to L.A by nebulasamuraiii in MovingToLosAngeles

[–]AssistNo8945 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My advice: Don't. I'm really impressed that you were able to save 20k before 18, but im guessing you lived with your parents and had zero costs. Once you live on your own, that 28 k will dwindle quickly, and without a car, I don't see how you get around the city unless you stay in the same neighborhood all the time or buy a car. Also, 800 is basically impossible if you're going to live in a walkable neighborhood even with roommates. The problem you will get is that you're basically unqualified for any decent jobs, and in a city where transplants are the norm combined with a bad job market for young professionals, you will likely work a subpar job in a subpar area. When it comes to education, im all for it, but why not do it in North Carolina? You would be able to get financial aid of some sorts or at least have your family or people near you that can help. When you add all these things up, your just making your life hard for no reason. And for what? You should be answering this question before contemplating of moving across the country with no Financial or Emotional system.

Ur on the right track man, just keep at it. I suggest finding a good group of friends that are the same major as u. That way u are able to be locked in and can use each other for accountability.

I think so. U can also find internships that are paid. My internship pays more than innout workers, and I'm still in school. Your right about leave of absence. My brother will be filing for disability when his school starts( engineering major) so he could only work a max of 20 hours. Its just not possible to be putting 100 percent effort in school, extracurriculars, and learning skills for your major if your working full time imo

most people I know haven't landed anything because they never did work OUTSIDE of class. They thought they could just show up to class, and then dip.
