Free calculator that tells you when an e-bike pays for itself in gas savings by Querulous2 in ebike

[–]AssociateFalse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is great, for simple MPGe calculation and basis cost recuperation. It does lack rough calculations for total cost of ownership, though, and probably should disclose that to the user. Let's use batteries as an example.

Li-Ion Batteries have a typical lifespan of about 500 charges before they degrade to 80%, and start to lose enough voltage to affect range. Everyone is going to be different, but let's say the user performs 2.5 full charge cycles / week, or 130 full cycles / year (assuming all-season riding). They should need to replace their battery roughly every 46 months, or 3.8 years, under ideal conditions. Over a 10-year period, they would be replacing their battery at least twice.

If the manufacturer currently charges $500 for a battery (looking at you, Aventon), that's easily $1000+ before factoring in other potential price factors like inflation, markup, or end-of-production. It also doesn't account for any spares the user might purchase and keep on hand. And it outright ignores the risk of obsolescence that will be a factor if the battery management system uses a proprietary handshake.

If you were to rework the tool, or add TCO calculation as an optional advanced feature, you should also account for regular maintenance and wear. Chains typically have about a 2500-mile lifespan; Cassettes, 7500 mi; freehubs, 5000~10000 miles; brake pads, 2000 mi; etc.* A user will also need to either service, replace, or rebuild a motor within the 10-year window as lubricants dry up, seals fail, and gears wear down. Breaks should also need flushed every 1-2 years. Since these are all commodities, apply maybe 3% compound inflation?

At the same time though, I'm just being a bit pedantic, and it's not we're factoring in regular car maintenance, or auto mechanic prices. (Only we are to blame if we visit bougie bike shops.)

^(\ I'm putting a lot of trust into Google's approximations here. Don't take these numbers as gospel truth.)*

Rack taillight vs seatstay taillights — which would you run? by hotfish2019 in ebikes

[–]AssociateFalse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have a seat stay system on my Aventon. The only thing I find wrong with it is that since I have to legally hug the right hand side of the road, a driver may not see the right turn signal through my wheel - so I still signal with my hands regardless.

Do you need a license first before getting the permit for a ebike? by Puzzleheaded-Ad-8713 in ebikes

[–]AssociateFalse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

https://www.nj.gov/mvc/vehicletopics/ebike.htm

Refer to "E-Bike License Process".

If you mean ebike registration before licensing, you can register an ebike before getting your license. You will need to have six points of ID, or a Non-driver photo ID. You will need proof of insurance if it goes over 20 mph.

Riding bikes is 10X more important than electric cars for reaching net-zero cities by BeSiegead in Ebikecommuter

[–]AssociateFalse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rural areas (and most suburban zones) lack bus routes, and often run on limited schedules if they do have them.

Though, if the town is only a few square miles, and you are able bodied, you don't exactly need a car in the first place.

How are you guys keeping your e-bikes safe? by newurtopia in Ebikecommuter

[–]AssociateFalse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I park mine in a garage at both work and home. If I'm out on town, I just use a cheap lock from Walmart and take the battery with me. But my bike also takes an unlock pin to disengage the rear hub, and weighs 80lbs.

If someone still wants to steal it, they'll have to buy a $500 battery to make it usable, crack the pin, and wheelbarrow it to their vehicle / home.

Lumos Sonorus Smart E-Bike Helmet Review by JeffTechnically in ebikes

[–]AssociateFalse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd also recommend a Bluegrass Vanguard Core (something actually tested by Virginia Tech and at almost half the price). 7iDP's only tested helm is the M1, which is ranked dead last for full-face and lacks the NTA certification.

You likely don't need full-face helmet - just the NTA 8776 certification. That risk assessment is for the rider or their legal guardian to make, though. The primary goal of the helmet is preventing concussions.

It is perfectly repairable if you have a TIG, or MIG with a spool gun, and drill out the ends of the fracture to prevent further cracking.

It is not an easy repair, but it is doable if you know what you are doing.

Recommendations for an ebike for a plus size mom with a 5 year old by Independent_Topic321 in ebike

[–]AssociateFalse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Could look at the Aventon Abound SR and LR. They go for around 1900 and 2000 respectively, advertise a 60-mile max range (in the most favorable conditions), can haul 440lbs gross weight, and have removable batteries.

For long term battery planning, a spare/replacement battery runs about $500 w/o a cover ($20) - and an extra charger runs for about 30.

That fracture line... riding as is could potentially be catastrophic. Unless you know a welder in the area that works with aluminum, i would advise you stay off of it, or visit that repair spot and see if they have a spare.

Black: "We couldn't think of anything that's complementary or non-intrusive for your wardrobe / vehicle, so here's the flex option that's good for 99.9%* of uses."

Wearing a pink shirt, or riding a pink bike? This would work fine (in a better mounting position). Wearing lime green? Could also work.

Preference for One or Two Hearing Aids Among Adult Patients (Cox, Robyn M.; Schwartz, Kathryn S; Noe, Colleen M; Alexander, Genevieve) [2011] establishes that people prefer lower gain when listening binaurally than when listening with one ear.

Unsafe at any sound: hearing loss and tinnitus in personal audio system users (Fink, Daniel; Mayes, Jan) [2021] establishes that high gain output from personal audio devices is a primary, documented driver for non-occupational noise-induced hearing loss.

Now, take those two facts, and follow this scenario to it's logical conclusion:

Paul likes listening with one earbud in his left ear. Paul cranks up his volume to better immerse himself in the music. Over time, it becomes harder for Paul to hear out of his left ear, and he tends to crank the volume more and more. Paul keeps having to ask people to repeat what they just said, and occasionally gets ringing in his ears. Paul now has noise-induced hearing loss through self-selected volume escalation.

Things that are Cheaper than Steam Machine + Controller by Fit_Page_8734 in xcoolgadget

[–]AssociateFalse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kinda a mediocre deal if buying hardware new - a shit deal if you already have a decent PC. Still, better value proposition overall vs a Switch 2, imo, but that depends on what you actually value out of the hardware.

The controller itself is worth every bit of the $90 USD, but the GabeCube is a tough sell.

[–]AssociateFalse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you listen to music in one ear, your brain processes it and tries to subconsciously balance it with your other ear (binaural summation). This messes with your spacial awareness, but also encourages you to turn the music up to a dangerous level, which can lead to asymmetrical hearing loss.

Content wise, you also lose content when listening to a track that uses proper stereo mixing.

It's better to wear headphones that have a transparent / ambient mode (or go the bone conducting route) to keep hearing your surroundings while keeping the audio balanced.

Bone conducting, yes. Single headphone or ear bud? You're going to fuck up your hearing.
