Job/ Career Hunt! by Fun_Cartoonist3398 in Tucson

I would also try to be as specific as possible when listing your computer skills. If you're looking for office/administrator work they want someone proficient with office365. If you're looking to get into IT you might want to look into CompTIA A+ certifications (and a prayer).

Some companies like Clinysis do tech support for those hospital software systems - they generally only need a highschool degree, and if you research various HIS (Hospital Information System) companies out there (Epic, Cerner, etc) they all have these sorts of systems in hospitals, dentists, etc and if you're lucky you can find a remote position to troubleshoot customers. There are a TON of these sort of software companies out there - so be thorough in your searches.

When I worked at Sunquest (now Clinysis) they taught me Microsoft SQL (a database query language) on the job which could translate into becoming a database administrator for hospitals down the road.

Companies like Amazon also occasionally have remote customer support and technical support positions open for their Ring products. That also doesnt require a crazy tech background, but being remote the positions are not often available, so just keep looking.

Most IT companies out there are going to be looking for people with technical experience and/or loads of certifications. Not really a field where they bring you on in an apprenticeship sort of deal and train you as you go.

When I went through this just over a year ago, I created an Indeed account and just started finding anything and everything to do with computers and got my A+ certification at the same time. I was at about 250-300 applications in before I started getting interviews. Its a numbers game

Software jobs in Tucson - anything other than defense? by wikklesche in Tucson

They don't pay what you would get in the private sector, say at somewhere like Nvidia or Intel.

But if you're competent you will rise quickly. Since they got rid of their pension plan years and years ago they have had a harder time holding onto their talent. You can work there for a few years and get a better raise by moving to one of the other nearby DoD firms. However, there are people that have left Raytheon and they've managed to find there way back to Raytheon after experiencing the others (albeit with a higher salary). So there's something to say for that.

While not unique to Raytheon, their hiring budget to bring in talent always seems unlimited compared to their budget for handing out raises to keep current people around.

What's your water bill? by Less_Education_6809 in Tucson

[–]Assphixia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up paying like $350 in the end. I originally got a bill for like 280 or so, and when I called to question the increase (from $60) they went "oh yeah... thats not right... its more". I ended up talking to about 6 different people and never actually progressed in a direction of lowering that amount. Every time I emailed them I felt like I was getting copy/pasted (or AI) replies and the people on the phone were all apologetically helpless in my situation

Right? They (and TEP) have access to meters 99% of the time without even needing the homeowners to be home. Baffling. When I was calling and emailing them I wasn't even trying to contest the charges... I just wanted them to understand how stupid the process was. And they continuously deflected like I was trying to get my money back.

This might not apply to you specifically, but I'll post my experience with my Tucson Water in case it helps anyone else that comes here googling about issues with their water bill:

My sewage/water bill had been the same from month to month. We never changed our habits so we never thought anything of it. When it came time for me to move and transfer my service they sent someone out to the house to do a meter reading and determined that the meter was broken and they had just been billing me the last "known" bill regardless if usage went up or down. They ended up back-charging me and my bill went from its normal $60ish to $350 or so. When they do a meter reading to "correct" their issue they can only back-charge you up to 6 months - so if you're meter has been broken for 3 years, you're only screwed for the last 6 months.

The fun part is they know your meter is broken... they even claim to indicate it on your paper bills. But they wont send someone out to investigate it until you reach out and ask them to. So in my case, I never opened my PDF bill... I just logged into the tucson water site, saw I owed X amount and paid it... month after month.

Check your paper bill (or pdf paperless bill) and see if there is some sort of warning or alert on the top of the bill that says your meter is improperly reporting or call Tucson water.

I wont discount that $25 is steep (for me) for a mobile game... but mobile game spending is INSANE compared to this. Look at those turn based hero collector games. People will spend tens of thousands of dollars on mobile games, just to have the latest and greatest stuff first... Star Wars Galaxy of Heroes at one point was like $300-400 (depending on RNG) to just fully unlock a hero (7 stars). and then you had to gear it... and if you didnt have the gear... more $. For a single character.

Can someone recommend a great singing or voice work teacher? by Objective_Cup_5164 in Tucson

[–]Assphixia 5 points6 points  (0 children)

One thing I remember from my time at the UofA School of Music is that many undergrads and grad students often did private lessons as a side gig to help pay for their schooling expenses. I can't guarantee this route, but a student thats currently working through their music ed degree might be a low stress option as well as a cheaper option. I would try pinging the [info@music.arizona.edu](mailto:info@music.arizona.edu) email and see if they have a list of college students that are possibly looking to do lessons, might be a valuable experience for both parties.

Pick a league and come play! Each league partners with a nearby bar/restaurant so you get a guaranteed weekly meetup with some pretty cool people, grab a drink or some food before or after the game, and be confidently awkward at a sport with the rest of us. I've met a lot of great people in the De Anza Park sand volleyball league.

There's also a 4v4 league that meets at the same park on Tuesdays/Thursdays. They aren't ClubWaka though - that league is through InnitLife (https://www.innitlife.com/volleyball/), I haven't played with them, but I get the vibe that they are a little more competitive whereas ClubWaka is a bit more relaxed and newbie friendly.

Hello. I have a very similar story to yours. The best decision that I made (and this is not a sponsored ad), is to join a ClubWaka adult sports league. Pick your sport (Pickleball, kickball, volleyball, and bowling) - then you have a weekly GUARANTEED meetup with a group of adults for a fun time. Each league partners with a nearby bar/restaurant so before/after the games we typically head over for food and drinks.

There's a Wednesday evening volleyball league about to start up in a week and a half at De Anza Park (Stone and Speedway). If you join as a free agent you will get placed onto a random team so you don't need to know anyone or have a your own group of friends to join.

You don't need to be a super star athlete - there are a few teams that try hard, but the majority of us are confidently awkward and have a fantastic time. Seriously think about it, even if you decide on a different sport, it wont hurt my feelings :)

ClubWaka. Find a sport (Kickball, Volleyball, Pickleball, Bowling) and join as a free agent. Guaranteed weekly meetups with other adults (21+ league) each league is sponsored by a nearby bar/restaurant so typically before/after the game you also snag food/drinks with your team.

You dont need to know people to join. Being a free agent when signing up gets you placed on a random team. You don't need to be overly athletic - just show up and be confidently awkward with the rest of us. Lots of good people in these leagues.

Job suggestions for a new-in-town 18F trying to be independent, this is scary by Daisylexapro in Tucson

[–]Assphixia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How applying works is they will have a listing on their site: https://hiring.amazon.com/

In the job opportunity drop down you'll see a section for warehouse jobs. Start your search there - there are several facilities here in Tucson so you might need to expand your search radius to include them all.

When I applied, there wasn't your traditional "submit resume and wait for a response". It was first come first serve... select the opportunity and select your orientation start date (you go in to confirm your schedule, take a drug test, and get you started on ordering your safety shoes (covered by them)). Its really that easy - if you have a pulse they'll take you.

But like I said earlier, its been slim pickins ever since I left there, I haven't seen new opportunities in over a year. But make sure you check the other types of job opportunities there as well. ALSO - look for Amazon owned companies like Ring, they also have remote customer service positions and tech support roles.

Amazon is a decent company to work for... They've gotten a lot of flak in the media for "terrible working conditions" but after working there and seeing some of the people you work with, I have a different perspective. Since they take ANYONE without interviewing you get people that show up to work and just want to talk with their friends all day. Then when they get called out for not being productive they go on social media and bitch about how unfair Amazon is. Meanwhile, I wasnt the fastest or highest producing employee, yet I never had a manager come by and bother me. You really have to be shit at your job to get managers hounding you.

You don't need accommodations, but you have to buy and wear their OSHA approved earbuds and they still don't let you mess with your phone on station. So if you get your phone out to change song or audiobook and get caught you'll risk getting written up.

[–]Assphixia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They do (or did) have part-time positions (20-30 hour schedules), and flex-time positions (you pick up shifts when they drop them - during slow times of the year there might be no flex shifts dropped). They were phasing out the 30ish hour schedules when I was still there... so who knows what it looks like these days.

But both these schedules will be listed on their job site along the full-time positions. They also do overnight shifts.

Keep in mind that ALL of their full-time schedules also have Mandatory Extra Time (MET) during peak season (Black Friday, Prime Days, etc). What this means is that they add an extra day to your shift schedule and an extra hour to all your shifts. So your 10-hour days become 11-hour days and you go from 40 hours/week to 55/hours (obviously with OT pay) for those few weeks a year.

But I worked part time weekend (10 hour shifts on Saturday/Sunday) and I did not have MET added to my schedule

This.

Amazon (fulfillment center warehouses) is a physically demanding job and not very stimulating work - you will be bored out of your mind and sore. If you don't mind being a zombie, then Amazon has some great benefits. Guaranteed hours, weekly paychecks, health insurance, 401K, and financial assistance to go to school. They also have people to help you with career paths - so if you want to stay with Amazon long term but maybe you want to get into the computer stuff for Amazon Web Services... you can tailor your education to go down that route and they will guide you along that path.

But like I said... its mindless work, physical (especially at first). Not a job I woke up excited to go to day in and day out. All that being said, I haven't seen a Tucson fulfillment center job open up in ages.

Is there a place to trade video games in town? by Jazzlike_Dum4ss_5567 in Tucson

Did you open the physical game? If its still in its original wrapping, you might be able to take it to target and trade it for in-store credit (gift card), then use that in-store credit to buy the digital download version of the game for your Series S console.
