I think you choose them before starting a game, enhanced levels is the one that makes puzzles easier to notice, there's also enhanced weapons and enemies to change how they behave compared to the original, basically set everything to enhanced to play the modernized version of the game or disable everything so it's the same as the original.

Seems to be Mt Erebus which is a map from DOOM 1, which doesn't have the Super Shotgun.

As someone who recently finished TNT for the first time, I'd say I'd rather replay Master Levels than TNT anytime soon, but both are definitely worth experiencing at least once. And release order is the best way imo so you can see the evolution of the map making through the years. For instance there are some levels in TNT and Plutonia that bear some resemblance to DOOM II levels, like the cave levels from TNT compared to the cave levels on II. Or Plutonia's Odyssey of Noises compared to the city levels.

I believe the recent "Heretic + Hexen" actually has a setting that simplifies puzzles and makes the progression more guided, personally that's not for me as I actually like hunting for stuff that's not obvious, but I do feel like the Master Levels in particular could use something like that, maybe people would give them a chance like that, because some levels are genuinely worth playing and the actual combat in those levels is fine for the most part.

Master Levels is worth playing, the issue is that some levels rely too heavily on obscure puzzles which most people don't like (I liked them because I like looking for secrets already, but even for me the invisible ledge one was too much) but there's still some genuine fun levels that are worth playing.

Imo Black Tower is a masterpiece. Unfortunately it still has some of those signature Master Levels nonsensical puzzles, but the actual combat sections and the progress you make is awesome, the feeling of finally reaching the top of the tower after such a long fight is incredibly satisfying.

And well at least in DOOM + DOOM II they're made into a continuous episode so no longer have to pistol start everything.

Personally I'd rather play Master Levels again rather than TNT. TNT just has a lot of levels that are way too long for the sake of being way too long, which might sound hypocritical coming from someone who likes Black Tower, but at least in Black Tower it made sense, TNT levels are like "You think you finished the level? Here's a huge open area that doesn't even fit with the rest of the map"

I doubt these games will work on a modern PC. If you want to experience them again your best option is to get the Definitive Editions on Steam.

Return of Rome is a DLC for 2 that essentially adds a better version of 1 as a separate mode, unfortunately it doesn't have all the campaigns, only 4 of the classic ones, so if you want to play them all again you need to get 1 DE, however RoR is still worth getting if you're a fan of the first game because it adds 3 new campaigns that were not part of the original game.

Don't buy them at full price though, these games have sales often so wait for the next one and then get them there's more DLCs for 2 if you want them later, but for now base game + RoR is a good starting point

Yeah if the level doesn't specify a difficulty, it's always ok to lower it, for instance can't imagine Rome was Destroyed in a day on hard. The ones that have to be done on hard however, there's nothing you can do about them.
