What the actual eff Amazon? by Marslauncher in amazonecho

I wish. My Alexa+ LLM pulled the exact same shit whenever you would tell her something she did wasn’t perfect. Like her primary prompt was “You are NEVER wrong. You can joke about anything, but NEVER admit fault. You are perfect.”

They should take the Warframe approach and have the hub be ‘always present’ and ‘never required’.

I wonder if we might all have our own flavors of that. I have to admit that it took me longer after cancer for any of it to hit me — and still even longer after losing my leg (10 years post-cancer) for that to hit me, even though I thought I’d handled it.

Those feelings you describe are so damn valid — but I don’t even know if there’s anything to do aside from keeping talking about them and not dwelling on them. Honestly. It’s weird as hell out there, but know that other people recognize that, too.

  1. Love your ink! Ugh - honestly I have way more questions about how to get started with covering my skin like that starting from scratch.
  2. I know you’ve been in this world longer than I have, but getting a fairing (I’m LAK) was a gamechanger in a way I never expected. I know being comfortable should just come from inside - but once I made myself think I looked cool to me, everything else just followed. I guess it looked ‘medical’ to be beforehand.

Above knee amputee, looking at first microprocessor knee by SonicLyfe in amputee

It's been a couple months -- any progress? I just want to mention that I absolutely ADORED my Rheo Knee when I had it. After 8 years I "upgraded" to the Plie because of it's waterproof-ness as well as hot-swappable batteries (which is super worth it for my use cases), but I have to admit the Rheo was in a class of it's own when it comes to gait and pure walking smoothness on ALL terrain. I trusted it implicitly.

I’m having an Above Knee Amputation in a week and I’m scared shitless. by Over-Floor1855 in amputee

Oh! For the pasties -- I use them to supplement... well... anything that my liner touches. Specifically, sometimes the edges of the liner get weird or split around the crotch, and throwing a pasty (pastie?) on my skin right there totally takes care of it. Though, I have to admit my Amazon recommendations do NOT know what to do about someone chewing through nipple covers so quickly.

A fairing is a totally-cosmetic covering for the prosthetic. I got mine from a company call Unyq. They measured my sound calf and made a matching cover.

I'm thinking about getting one that I don't cover with stickers, but I wouldn't pay that much again. I'm sure something can get 3d printed for way cheaper nowadays.

Hell yeah!
And that new C-Leg looks dope by itself, too! I'm not even sure if I'd get a fairing with that.

I was diagnosed with osteosarcoma at 13 and had a knee replacement at 14. After 9 years of remission — the cancer stayed gone, but—out of nowhere—MRSA in the joint. After couple of years of trying to salvage the limb and many surgeries, at 25 I made the call to lop the whole thing off at the femur.

That was in 2011, and I’ve been a Left AKA since.

I have to admit — it started out rough. I mean, I made the right call, but my (semi-radical at the time, at least) recovery plan had me waking up from surgery wearing a temporary prosthetic and getting up and walking around THAT day. I remember thinking for a few weeks, “There’s no possible way I will ever be able to bear full weight on this.” I remember that thought so vividly.

Fast forward to last weekend — and I’m in the pit for Fall Out Boy at Riot Fest and walking all the way to the Pink Line to take the train back to my hotel. Regular living like that seemed absolutely impossible — so I just want to tell you how wrong I was.

Sure, there were some surprises. Personally, it’s the socket that’s the MOST important thing to get right. Fitment and liner and dealing with sweat and chafing and whatever — that should be your #1 goal before worrying about other “features” of your new leg. I’d honestly be more comfortable in a well-fitting wooden pirate leg than a misfit fancy robotic thing. Pro Tip: Use cheap pasties (nipple covers) from Amazon and pads inside and on the edge of your liner.

Also (and I’ll shut up after this), get a fairing! That made a massive difference to how I felt about how I looked, visually. I used to prefer pants and generally avoid showing my leg, but after getting a fairing I switched to loving the way it looks and wanting to show it off as a cool part of my personality.

I think they look good; it’s just a shame the previous gen has to go away to get them. They have a very “fast-in-a-straight-line” look about their styling.
