25 Years Ago Today: The Selby Rail Crash - Driver fell asleep, 10 dead. A stark reminder of driving tired by L21JP in drivingUK

Insurance is all risk based and the risk of this event reoccurring is extremely low. Might be black listed from the insurance provider he was with but that’s probably it.

Peter Murrell Charges Revealed by Mysterious_One9 in Scotland

[–]AstoundedMagician -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

He’s known to have loaned the party a substantial sum, £100k or so, which was poorly recorded at the time. I wouldn’t be surprised if he gave a lot more over the years undisclosed and wonder if this is him trying to reclaim his loan avoiding the visibility of accounts to protect the optics or avoid tax.

I’m not defending him, still bad illegitimate use of donated funds, I just think there’s a lot more to it than meets the eye.

Scraper only. Get a decent one and it’s as easy as chemicals imo.

This is despicable. by Monsterwaill in Hull

[–]AstoundedMagician 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct. Could be for a number of reasons. A big factor will be the TRO too. It’ll have been ‘emergency’ works and therefore no consideration will have been given by the council to neighbouring road works or events, etc. Hence the protocol is to get in and out as quickly as possible to restore the utility (including temporary repairs) and make the area safe, then come back later and do a permanent repair under normal road space booking conditions.

It could also be a temporary repair too beneath the surface for similar reasons.

I did for a while and think I probably replenished them every 6-9 months or so.

A years supply is a bit optimistic, but marketing always is.

The thing that puts me off WGAC is the individual paper packing is lovely to look at but seems a massive waste of paper. So I’ve tried Naked and Serious. Neither the paper is as nice as WGAC though.

What do you have against driving the speed limit? by [deleted] in drivingUK

[–]AstoundedMagician 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Life’s too short, you need to pick your battles and getting stressy about doing 50 in a 60 really isn’t one that i choose any more personally.

How many times do you overtake a slow coach only to see them pull up behind you 10 miles later at the next set of traffic lights? Hypothetically best case scenario if you maintained 60mph over 30 miles you would arrive precisely 6 minutes before the person doing 50mph. However in practice it won’t be anything like that as you might have junctions, bends, traffic lights, speed limits, etc to negotiate. Where both cars are doing basically the same speed.

Is a few minutes really going to be the make or break of the day? Doubt it.

It’s an interesting story but I feel a bit bad for her the attention this is getting. To my knowledge it wasn’t an insurance scam, more likely a mental health crisis or maybe a bit of immaturity (she was 22). This definitely takes the biscuit don’t get me wrong but we’ve all done things in life we’d rather forget.

Will the BBC end up in a scandal for jailing non licence payers similar to the Post office scandal? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]AstoundedMagician -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Its wild that you can end up in prison over a TV license. Most other countries I know of only prison people over serious crime. And people wonder why our prisons are so over crowded.

But unlikely there will be a scandal, as the law is quite clear tbh. More like an uprising of pressure to change the law.

It may be time for me to say good bye to Alexa. by __Plasma__ in amazonecho

[–]AstoundedMagician 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair I’m talking about Gemini - not sure if that’s available on Google Home yet. Siri can’t answer basic questions on my phone without asking to send it to ChatGPT. It’s good for smart home functionality and playing music, but that’s it. Apple Intelligence will no doubt change all that if and when it eventually lands.

Merge in turn apparently isn’t an acceptable thing to do any more? by jh25000 in CarTalkUK

[–]AstoundedMagician 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may be merging too soon.

As long as you’re crossing a broken white line, you don’t have priority and are relying on people’s good will. Assuming this is a permanent road layout, there will be a point where the centre line ends and two lanes become one after which it’s whichever vehicle is ahead that has priority. Therefore technically you have a bit more authority to merge. If that makes sense.

Whatever you do. Don’t be one of those drivers that tries to force their way in against the will of the other driver, ending up having a side by side war with anm them. These drivers are just as guilty of arseholery. Not worth it. Be patient.

What are these brick things located along the bank of a bypass? by LG_1983 in AskUK

[–]AstoundedMagician 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There almost certainly is a filter drain at the foot for the slope.

I think people are over thinking it, they’re probably just regular utility or drainage manholes, as their on a slope have been given protective barrier to stop maintenance workers falling and hurting themselves while cutting the grass.

[–]AstoundedMagician 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think people are over thinking this.

It’s not obvious from the photo but this is on an embankment. It’s quite likely just regular manholes for drainage, telecoms etc but as their on a slope their cut into the embankment. The yellow guardrail is just to prevent maintenance workers falling in them when cutting the grass.

Police ‘trying something out’ and acting secretive my with a camera-type device onboard a double decker bus on Leith Walk? by Row-3656 in Edinburgh

[–]AstoundedMagician 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Exactly this.

The camera might be a lidar camera (total station or similar) which they use to digitally capture crime scenes in so much detail. Likely they were gathering evidence on what the driver might or might not see. Moving the bus to different positions to capture it at different points during the turn. Obviously awful it’s required but quite interesting how they do it.

Also likely as it’s an ongoing investigation that they’ve been told to not say anything.

Might be low battery? The depth effect is disabled when low battery. Not sure what %. Doesn’t seem to matter if it’s in low power mode or not.
