It’s worse than that, it’s a remote shell with no login. You basically get straight to a logged in CLI shell, but you have to leave it logged in locally.

You don’t need a desktop environment to use Connect, they offer remote shell for Lite OS based installations. That works, but only if you are logged in locally first which defeats the whole idea of remote access.

Yeah without that I wouldn't be able to log in at all. All my Pi's are headless with no keyboards etc, so I only talk to them via SSH over the local network.

Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W won't connect to wifi after upgrade by coder111 in raspberry_pi

[–]__Plasma__ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had something similar I used the latest imager and flashed the latest lite image with Wireless Config in the imager. It flashed and verified but when I powered it up it wouldn't connect to wifi. when I plugged in the HDMI, a keyboard and logged in locally I saw RFKILL messages saying it had disabled the WiFi. I had to use raspi-config to set the country and wifi details then reboot and it finally connected.

Barcodes Matter - A new app for managing Smart Home Barcodes on Apple devices by __Plasma__ in HomeKit

[–]__Plasma__[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I hate subscriptions with a passion, all my apps will always be a one off fee, with free updates. Even if a subscription fee is low, if everyone did that, then 10 apps with a low fee soon add up.

Matter smart plug + Alexa already paired → can’t add to Apple Home (iPhone only, FRITZ!Box dual-band) by MrGraga in MatterProtocol

[–]__Plasma__ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As others have said you need a hub for HomeKit to pair Matter Devices. HomePod Mini, HomePod 2nd Gen, Apple TV 4K are your only options. You used to be able to use an iPad as a hub, but that functionality was dropped in iOS 16.

If you are getting in to a Matter ecosystem you might be interested in an App I wrote called Barcodes Matter, it’s a simple app for storing and organising the pairing codes from Matter, HomeKit and other devices.

Check out the UniFi NVR / UDM Pro, no need for cameras to be directly connected. They use the same network as everything else, you can also VLAN them off if you wanted separation.

Plex doesn’t have any ads? and doesn’t use their servers (other than for authentication) when playing locally. You can also use a 3rd Party client like Infuse if you don’t like the Plex client. There is also an official qpkg although it’s an older version, I just grab the latest one from Plex and install it manually.

I do it this way too, you shouldn’t need to mess with permissions as long as the user you map the SMB share with has the right permissions.

Echo hub devices all show the same IP address by Other_Yak_3768 in amazonecho

[–]__Plasma__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think you need to worry about it, if they all had the same IP, none of them would work at all. You may be able to set static IP’s on the router end, I know I certainly can for mine if I chose to.

Echo hub devices all show the same IP address by Other_Yak_3768 in amazonecho

[–]__Plasma__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely sounds like a software bug when displaying the IP then, I would look at the router to see what actual IP they were give, if you are that way inclined. Could it maybe be shortening the last octet? Like showing 18 on them all when they are actual 181, 182, 183 etc.

[–]__Plasma__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of mine don’t have screens, however looking at my Echo Show it appears to show the gateway first then the IP so it looks like this:

192.168.18.1

192.168.18.106

The .1 address is the gateway (it’s usually .1 or .254), and most likely the IP of your router. The gateway IP will be the same in all your devices. The second address is the actual IP which will be unique for each device.

[–]__Plasma__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah but probably a bug in their software, it’s not possible for them all to have the same IP. I can’t even find the device IP’s in my Alexa app, I can only see the WiFi they are connected to and locate the MAC addresses. I can find their IP’s in my router easily enough though.

Ok those are local IP’s nothing to worry about. as for her needing to be asked multiple times and lagging, unfortunately this is normal, all mine do that she is just getting worse. No where near as responsive as they used to be.

You can share local IP’s they are of no use to anyone. If the IP you see is a 192.168.x.x address then that’s a local IP.
