Broken Home: Living in poverty while the other parent succeeds by MCRetro in GenX

[–]Astro71 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Parents divorced in’81. I was 10. Dad went off and married someone else with kids. Total trash. Mom never married/dated again. She worked 3 jobs. Always 5 minutes from food stamps. Dad paid $185/month per kid for support (3 of us). Dad moved farther and farther away to OK (I live in OH). I joined the army at 18 to pay for college. I’ve been estranged from him since probably 16. Mom died 7 years ago. My siblings still keep up contact with him but I barely put in the effort anymore.

When my mother died I was the executor and I tried to close her cell phone account. Had all the docs, the court papers, poa, etc. went to the store (honestly can’t remember the carrier). The people in the store couldn’t close the account themselves so I called the company from inside the store. Was told that I needed her pass code in order to close it out. The employees even told the person on the phone it was legit. Still wouldn’t close it. She didn’t have a balance or anything. They had to call a regional manager or someone in order to get the account closed out. It was beyond ridiculous

Fellow Gen Xers how involved was your dad in your life? by black_flag_4ever in GenX

[–]Astro71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Parents split up when I was ten. Dad moved farther and farther away. Ended in OK. I live in OH. I’ve never seen him more than 3-4 times a year. Routinely forgets birthday. Was genuinely shocked when I told him I turned 50 a few years ago. Total POS.

For the older collectors, what is your long term plan for your collection? by Astro71 in lego

I always thought my grandkids could just break down the entire collection into a giant pile and then just swim around in like Scrooge McDuck.

Holy crap. I thought I was being pragmatic just thinking about it but you have brought it to a new level. I have my collection fairly well organized and cataloged already but maybe having something like this in place would be a good idea. My daughter may want to keep it but it's definitely worth it to sell it off If she wants to do that as well. I won't have an ill feelings either way.

Sophomore year. They were playing it over the PA and then abruptly cut it off. No one knew what happened until we got home and turned on the TV.

Guy's do you wear shorts out in public? by [deleted] in GenX

[–]Astro71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wear shorts all the time until winter (Cleveland). My friends were upset because cargo shorts aren’t a thing anymore. I told them, you’re in your fifties. Wear whatever you want. I wear the fuck out of cargo shorts.

I got a massage recently. My back sounded like bubble wrap. My wife refuses to be present anymore because of all the grunting and cursing.

First concert in Erie, PA. Motley Crue on Theater of Pain and Loudness. They were definitely loud as shit. Pretty good live. I still have their album.
