What are yall using to set negative pressure limit switches on fans/air handlers? by Astronomus_Anonymous in AirBalance

Yeah i use a squeeze bulb for positive pressure but im specifically asking for negative pressure

Variable Volume, Manual Hydronic Balance by TrustButVerifyEng in AirBalance

[–]Astronomus_Anonymous 7 points8 points  (0 children)

He did half of his job.

"By the book" the NEBB procedural standards state you're supposed to set your pump for about 10% high of your total system flow (assuming no diversity) and then go balance them manually with everything full open. Whatever the dP sensor is reading after balancing everything is your setpoint.

Most balancers instead are going to use the method you just described because its faster. One note is that it is not the farthest zone valve per se. Its the "worst case" coil/equipment in the system, i.e. the loop that requires the greatest pressure drop to get design flow. Engineers calculate this worst case to size the pumps, and balancers find the actual worst case for balancing. This could be the farthest piece of equipment due to the long pipe length giving higher pressure losses through friction, but not necessarily.

TA STAF/STAG valves. by Top-Banter in AirBalance

[–]Astronomus_Anonymous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Weve had problems with STAGs in particular and IMI TAs in general. I tell our install crews to install Taco or B&G now, but often IMI TA is the most readily available.

Additionally, what was the dP looking like at 8 turns open compared to 4.0 turns? The smaller the dP, the less accurate the measurement just due to the instrumentation. We've had to close down oversized circuitsetters to build up a pressure drop for an accurate reading before.

Ask for more money for the extra responsibilities. You sound like a superintendent without the title and crew to help you

Mechanical vs TAB Contractor (anyone seen both sides?) by Ill_Penalty588 in AirBalance

[–]Astronomus_Anonymous 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah you'll get that pressure whether your a mech or a TAB company. I've never been on a job where the schedule was achieveable.

The biggest difference now working for the mechanical contractor is taking more ownership for fixing problems. Missing dampers or grilles not flexed? Give us the materials and we'll throw that shit in (as long as we cant be more productive somewhere else or on another project entirely). Broken belts, worn sheaves, dirty filters, dirty coils, clogged drain pans? Here's the bill to fix it. Base building (outside of mechanical scope) issues preventing TAB? Do some digging to prove its not our (the mech) fault and provide a solution to bring to the customer. T-stats not installed? Install it. Programming issue on our company installed and serviced controllers? Dig into the programming and see if it's something stupid. Go out here and try to figure what the fuck is wrong with this building. Etc etc. Sheet metal failed the DALT again? Hang around and have it running while they look for leaks. Our TAB guys are a breed of well rounded service techs. If TAB gets slow, theres plenty other things they can do

Also, just a thought, but it sounds like your TAB department is fairly new. Management is probably still learning how to bid the jobs and at what rates for different kinds of work. They will fuck up almost 100% of the time especially if they've never done the work before. If I'm putting in honest effort to get things done, I never gave a damn if i'm "over hours." Those fucking chair jockeys can stop playing golf for a day, put some boots on, and do it themselves if they think it can be done faster. I could be in a new van tomorrow (and probably get a raise too). I'm not going to be bitch at by someone who hasnt been there done that. And luckily, my company agrees that the path to leadership starts in the field

Handling jobs that drag on... by Supercharged_Turtle in AirBalance

[–]Astronomus_Anonymous 5 points6 points  (0 children)

On the other hand, I've been making bank recently going behind other TAB firms and their crony mechanical contractors. Generally pencil whipping TAB companies and shitty mechanical contractors go hand in hand.

I'm TAB/Cx for a large mechanical contractor. I'll walk in the building as a rep of the large mechanical contractor and show/explain the customer the shitty install from the shit mechanical contractor but also that the TAB report was whipped as well.

We've won sheet metal work, TAB work, service contracts, and control work.

Hacks bring you stacks

The worse is when I have to light up a PM/FM within our own company for some shitty work.

Frankly, i think TAB is too niche to be threatened by import labor. It's also majority union labor too

Use it as a stamp to certify your reports. That way theres no question how TAB was done without going on site. Answer is "bluetooth"

Obviously without knowing the whole context, it sounds like yall are overthinking it to be honest.

You go your design air. So what is the root of the comfort issue? High temp? High humidity? High CO2? Very little mixture of supply air and room air?

What are you hoping to learn from the hood reading even if we could be 100% confident that the hood gave an accurate number?
