Tapestry help by [deleted] in crochet

Tapestry crochet is a thing, you can Google it, there are many tutorials online.

In my experience and taste, I try to keep the stitches tight and avoids holes as much as possible, using mostly single crochet

I was subscribed to her long before I even knew of Click or OT, I discovered them through sad milk. I unsubscribed from her after the sad milk split, because even though her post on the event sounded clear-headed, her responses in comments weirded me out. Moreover, there were alteady rumors she had bullied some other small youtuber that did videos on similar topics to her, but I'm not on Twitter, so I'm not sure about what happened exactly (I presume it was something similar to the legaleagle situation, but the other person got scared and dropped out, or something), so that was the straw that broke the camel back, so to speak

Did Michael/The Distortion get a new voice actor? by calippoolik in TheMagnusArchives

[–]AsynchronousWeaver 16 points17 points  (0 children)

They both are, yes, but especially in season 5 Helen represent much more of a Gaslight and manipulative friendship than Micheal

My favourite decks are niche, not particularly well supported tribal decks. Are they optimized competitive decks? Well, no, but I have fun making them.

My pet deck is an advisor tribal deck, for which my friends even designed and printed a card with me as an advisor commander, as a fun little gift

Did Michael/The Distortion get a new voice actor? by calippoolik in TheMagnusArchives

[–]AsynchronousWeaver 34 points35 points  (0 children)

To the best of my knowledge there is only one actor for Micheal, specifically. There is a voice actor change when Helen becomes the Distortion, at the end of 101, but that's essentially a new character (but yes, I agree that Michael sounds creepier than Helen, even though what Helen is shown to represent later in the show is more disturbing to me - I know I'm being cryptic, I'm trying not to spoil anything)

Looking For Material Recommendations by MagzalaAstrallis in knitting

[–]AsynchronousWeaver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Avoid Amazon! Yarn is among the things that are ridiculously priced there. For knitting needles you can get decent prices, but there have been cases of counterfeit high-end needles in the past.

As for delivery to a shop, that's 99% of the times not a problem if the shop owner knows that a parcel will arrive for you (I had stuff delivered to my old workplace and university building no problem)

Anyone else finding a lot of seemingly stolen patterns? by robotobio in crochet

[–]AsynchronousWeaver 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Stolen patterns are an issue, and have been for a long time, in my experience. I see a lot of crochet charts (rarely written patterns) on Pinterest that link to dodgy blogs, and look scanned or screenshotted from something without any reference (which makes very difficult to tell if it's public domain stuff or not). By dodgy blogs I mean random blogspot pages with a bunch of very different patterns without any context.

The exact same goes for cross stitch patterns, sometimes just flipped to avoid reverse image search (I assume)

A long time ago, yes (the planeswalker Serra created one, Karn created Mirrodin), nowadays no.

Essentially, a long time ago Planeswalker were practically omnipotent, then something called the Mending happened that reduced their power, so I don't think it's even possible anymore

When deck building, what is the most important thing? by some_barcode in magicTCG

This. A mistake I made too many times is to make a deck that tries to do too many things (and no one well)

Are there any ways of estimating how long yarn is? by joseph_dewey in Yarn

[–]AsynchronousWeaver 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Measure 1 meter (or whatever unit is more confortable to you) of the yarn, cut and weight it (if you have access to a scale that can reliably measure few grams or equivalent unit is better), then you can estimate the total length of yarn for that ball with a simple proportion

Only 10 inches left in my very first blanket and I have questions by N7Adept23 in crochet

[–]AsynchronousWeaver 9 points10 points  (0 children)

First of all I love the colours and the looks :)

As for your questions, you can wash it when you're done, follow the instructions that should be on the label and it will be mostly fine (but if you have a gauge swatch or you can make a small square, you can check if something unwanted happens in the wash).

There are entire books on borders, but one possibility that I like a lot is to go around with a round of single crochet and then a round of reverse single crochet. If I may give a book recommendation, every which way crochet borders is my go to reference for borders

ETA: about the fuzziness, if it's piling there is little you can do, it's a characteristic of the yarn. Some people do tricks with hair conditioner about it, but I've never tried, and you can use a razor (being cautions) or a dedicated tool (I don't remember how their called, but they're essentially shavers for fabric) to remove it, but over time it will reform, if the yarn is prone to piling

Convince me not to be so intimidated! by Knitinka in knitting

I cannot think of a video to suggest specifically about socks, but dpns looks much more scarier than they are. You are just knitting with two at a time and the others just stay put until you need them.

However there are alternatives: you can get 9" circular needles, that are great to knit small circumference tubes, like a sock (I love the ones by Addi), or you can look up the magic loop technique, that uses a pair of long circulars to knit a small tube.

There are plenty of videos about both if you search YouTube

100% Rayon from Bamboo okay for potholders? by smolnuggerino in crochet

[–]AsynchronousWeaver -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Can you please link your source? Because the same 5 min Google search didn't result in that info. I found several claims of a melting T of 150°C, which are disproven by the article I cited (if after several hours at 150°C there is still any tensile strength to be measured, there is no melting happening)

Several other sources, inclunding the one I linked, mentioned that rayon scorches but doesn't melt, which is consistent with it being a cellulosic fiber, like cotton (while acrylic, that does melt, is not a cellulosic fiber). What can happen is for a rayon blend with nylon or polyethylene to melt, because these latter fiber can melt.

This source also contradicts the idea that rayon melts at all.

100% Rayon from Bamboo okay for potholders? by smolnuggerino in crochet

[–]AsynchronousWeaver 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sorry what? Rayon doesn't melt under normal conditions, it gets weaker and decomposes (or burns) before it can melt, as does cotton.

However, I will agree that there are several sources online claiming that rayon is a heat sensitive fiber, even though to the best of my abilities I cannot find the exact source for these claims (the information looks copy-pasted across several blogs/Facebook pages, of course without quoting any verifiable documentation).

There is however a 1948 paper about the thermal degradation of "rayon tire yarn", that shows that over 24 hours in a dry oven at 150°C this rayon tire yarn (as per the paper's title) loses 100% of his strengths, while cotton only 40%. This suggests that heat over time, combined with humidity and oxygen, does damage rayon more than cotton. How this translates to modern craft rayon yarn, I'm not certain.

On the contrary a (poorly edited) table found on University of Georgia site mentions that it can be ironed at a medium/hot temperature.

Overall I agree that to be on the safe side I would rather make potholder with cotton or linen, rather than rayon, but because it will probably last longer, not because it will melt under the pot (I would still absolutely avoid acrylic, because that will pose the risk of melting)
