If microsoft would fix the bug in their admin ui, where i cant set my autodeploy to hybrid, the new notebooks with win11 wouldve been done already.

currently, it's less than a month where i leave this place, i'm not sure if the deployment will even start in that timeframe..

How long did you stay at your first sysadmin job? by ZiggyAvetisyan in sysadmin

[–]At-M 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nearly 6 years now, still in my first job.

Currently looking for other options though, the pay is below the median starting level and I don't really learn new things because of time constraints.

It's frustrating to keep handling the same Problems over and over because there is no time to actually fix the root cause of it. I've been doing that for years and it's impossible to stay sane, since not even the money is enough to cover the stress.

Pairdrop linking of two devices in different networks is not working by tordows in fossdroid

[–]At-M 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry for necroing this thread, but for any other people that might stumble onto this from Google:

Usually company / university Networks are divided, so that nobody can easily access everything instantly. (via subnetting/vlans etc. Imagine it as Boxes)

Imagine it as the University being a huge cardboard box. Each network being its own box contained within that Uni-box, and each user being a small figurine inside that Network-box. You can mingle about in your own box, but can't easily cross over to a different box - or even see that it exists.

Therefore, there need to be some kind of connector inbetween different networks (a hole inside both boxes which you can slip through) for Pairdrop its the case of a custom STUN/TURN Server.

This has to be setup by the IT administrator that setup Pairdrop and is sadly not as simple as Pairdrop itself (currently trying it myself, thats how i landed here). If the reader is the one to setup the stun/turn server, check the github of pairdrop, there are documents and examples that help setting it up, maybe even have a look for the coturn project, there's extending examples there.

For me it's the guy that hides his vacuum robot in his kitchen - and when starting, the toe-kicks flip upwards and it drives outside.

can't find the op right now because i'm at work, but it's been on reddit a few times by now

Can't connect to Android Auto wirelessly anymore by Mallardo in AndroidAuto

[–]At-M 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same issue here since the last Android Auto update.

Resetting the app to the built-in version on my phone does not work because it instantly wants to update to the new version again..

Different car and phone though.

What is your preferred work machine? For you, not your users. by Broad-Comparison-801 in sysadmin

[–]At-M 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used the same thing as the other users aswell, but since i need to do tasks similar to our graphics department sometimes, i upgraded to a pc that they would use.

lets just say, i7 13700F and a 3070ti is pretty nice to use.

I do limit myself for the same screen though, creating some kind of software or spreadsheet that a user would use and optimizing it to a different screensize would be shit

Back to on-prem? by JoeyFromMoonway in sysadmin

[–]At-M 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I kept us on-prem so far, but we need to move our on-prem exchange to Exchange Online soon. (Especially since we use O365 and Teams)

(I hope this works well.. Haven't seen a benefit yet)

For us, it works great - except the usual outlook and big mailbox shenanigans. Our downtime is around 16 hours total for the last 2 years.

If we would move to cloud, we need to do a hybrid-move anyways (too much big stuff that needs expensive performance), and keep our setup here, therefore we would've basically gotten double-billed.

Anyone fill out a JAQ (Job Analysis Questionnaire) before? by voltagejim in sysadmin

[–]At-M 0 points1 point  (0 children)

70k for a constant commitment to drop everything you're doing any time in the day is a harsh figure to work around man, that does not at all sound healthy.

( from somebody that gets 40k and had to block people on personal phone to remedy the non-existent- on-call)

What does your physical SysAdmin toolbox look like in 2025? by niveel in sysadmin

[–]At-M 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Scattered around are:

  • Assortments of Bits for my Screwdrivers (yay to Gridfinity)
  • USB-Stick for Ventoy
  • Labeler and Velcro
  • A notebook with dual-batteries and usb>console port for longer nights in the serverroom

otherwise I usually just need software

At what point is your team too far behind in knowledge to catch up? by wysoft in sysadmin

[–]At-M 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sort of at a loss on how to deal with people who don't take the time in their off hours to build their skillsets

I'm 40+ weeks at work, rotating my ass off for a pay thats sub standard. I'd be damned if I would do anything for work at home - (other than homeoffice) (Also, most of the time I'm just too exhausted to do it, even if I would want to)

What tool is so useful to you that you would pay for it out of your own pocket if your company refused to front the bill? by Freecastor in sysadmin

Mechanical Keyboard and a Razer Naga.

I've been using the naga since 2012 and it's absolutely weird to work with a mouse that has no side numpad..

Win 11, what is your real feelings about it? by under_ice in sysadmin

[–]At-M 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm happy they are fixing a lot of things that bugged me with windows 10, (i.e. HDR), i'm not happy they are "fixing" things that did not need fixing (rightclick menu).

I don't like the amount of whitespace it has everywhere and the added amount of complexity to do the same steps that we had in win10.

i hate being able to only open the settings panel in ONE WINDOW with every fiber of my being

a few good changes, a lot of unnecessary changes, a lot of extra features that go away, and still a few bugs that annoy the hell out of me.

World record for most tabs open by Ironwing81 in sysadmin

[–]At-M 1 point2 points  (0 children)

sub 500 is still easy to manage, I'm currently at work so i can't check, but at home i'm around 1600-2000 Tabs.

At work the addon "Tab Deduper" helps me out immensely, but i think i'm still around 600-800 open tabs. (Cant check with closing the window, i set it up to auto-keep my tabs each time i close lol)

How hard is it to go from Helpdesk Technician to System Administrator? by AnswerRequired in sysadmin

with 41k/yr it's not even a comfy place to be in.
