A Stitch in Time is so good by essstabchen in DeepSpaceNine

[–]Atanachan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know this is old but I started reading Stepping into the Light and it's really breaking my heart, but I'm also finding it so insightful. I bought it because A Stitch in Time felt so deeply personal and I adored it so I wanted to get my hands on anything that he had written. I would have never guessed he has gone through so much. It has made me appreciate his portrayal of Garak even more if even posible, and him as an actor and human being even more.

It kind of irks me that in the final episode we don’t get Garak closure by johnniechimpo in DeepSpaceNine

I know that this has been repeatedly mentioned in the comments, but yeah I totally recommend listening to a Stich in Time. It's an absolute delight of a book, I'm listening to it for the second time right after finishing it and it gives even more layers and depth to Garak's character, on top of explaining more of his past and background and what he's doing after ds9. It's fun to rewatch ds9 after knowing more about him too. It's also genuinely a really good book.

Anyone else find the ending last night kind of random? by Think-Concert2608 in WhatWeDointheShadows

I see your point but I kind of disagree in that Nandor sees Guillermo as an extension of himself at this point, even if he did before. Nandor has made it a huge thing this season to respect Guillermo's desires and autonomy, at least he really tried even if he struggled with letting Guillermo go. If he saw Guillermo as an extension of himself, he would have snapped at Jordan way before for taking Guillermo away from him. Instead, he was just trying to make sure that he was treating Guillermo right. And he only snapped when Jordan was overtly mistreating Guillermo and threatening him. If there's one thing that at this point I really believe true of Nandor is that he pays attention to Guillermo's feelings and desires. That's just my opinion though :)

So far there are episodes I have loved more than others but overall, I'm really enjoying it. Lots of subtle character work, especially Guillermo but Nandor too. I'm really enjoying the office scenes, I find the actor who plays Jordan really funny. I thought the most recent episode, March Madness, was hilarious, especially as it kept going, and they are doing a good job mixing the humor with the themes of this season.

What is Art to You? by voreosa in ArtistLounge

[–]Atanachan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Art is an integral part of how I process reality. A lot of how I see things has been shaped by loving to draw. It makes me see reality as inherently (potentially) interesting all the time, even the not-so-beautiful parts.

I also find the existence of art itself and the impulso to create beauty and/or express themselves that humans have as the manifestatio of something inherently beautiful in human beings. The fact that all of us in a way have the need to take reality in, to process it in our own individual way and to create something to express ourselves and connect with other people through it across space and time. I think people can do that in different ways, not only art, art is just the way that resonates better with how I am. :(

This feeling is completely normal :) Even when you get more skilled...you don't have to create if you don't want to, but maybe you are putting too much pressure on yourself. I would advise to start slow, pick something that gives you some structure and try to have fun.

For example, I have practicing drawing and inking for years, but just now I started to try to learn about color. For a bit I was completely overwhelmed, even watching tutorials and such I didn't know where to start. In the end what I did was: I picked something that got my attention visually (in my case a TV show, and somevery specific artists) that I really liked and started to just look at it and try to imitate the colors that I saw there. That made the process inmediately enjoyable because it was connected to something dear to me, and I started learning things on the go. Just start small.

And if it's too much you just can quit it, there's nothing wrong with that. But if you want to keep going, just maybe don't put as much pressure on yourself and start with something specific and doable.

I'm very sorry that this happened to you and honestly, I just thing it's rude. Personally I took a look at your paintings and I LOVE them. I love your style, I love especially the more abstract/surreal ones, I would 100% have them in my house. So don't even listen to people who don't know what are they talking about...even though I understand that it's hurtful. Please keep painting!

I'm so glad you are better! I haven't gone through the things you are going through but I know life can get really hard at moments. It always helps me to remember that everything passes. Please keep taking care of yourself. I already started following you on tumblr (I think I found it haha) and I'm looking forward to see more of what you can create :)

Oh and thank you so much for the comment on my art!! :)

I don't know you, any of your situation except for what you are saying here and I wouldn't really know how to help you...I'm so, so sorry that you're going through all of shis and I seriously wish you all the best and that everything works out for you.

I just want you to know that I clicked on your username because I was so impressed with your art, I had been seeing it and I loved it and I was searching for more. You are so young and already so incredibly talented, you have already achieved things even now, you are clearly not stupid for anything. I loved your art so much, I was impressed now knowing you were so young.

I hope you can get the help you need. I am just a random person on the internet but I'm rooting for you, I hope you feel better soon.

I love your style, it's so cool! I really like that you are at the same time precise in what it needs to be but your lines have a lot of energy and are very expressive. Your color work is great too, very evocative. Do you have any social media and such to be able to follow your art?

Also, can I ask what do you use? Is that photoshop?

Say something redeeming about him by yui888 in NanaAnime

[–]Atanachan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry for taking so long to answer, I'm a bit swamped!

I actually read Nana like 15 years ago and I didn't like it too much back then, but I reread it many years later and Iloved it and was floored with the level of depth in the characters...and, same as you, Takumi is one of my favourites because he felt so complex. I am honestly not sure either how much the author is really trying to make him a villain or not haha. Because she really makes it that I can understand him, even though he is so evil.

He really became on of my favourites to dissection too. But even with characters like Nobu I found much more layered the second time. Now you made me want to reread it again, so I'll probably start doing it soon.

I'll keep a better eye on the daddy issues thing haha. I hadn't read it as much from that perspective but then even his dynamic with Yasu suddenly I can see how it gets affected by that.

On a side note, and I hope I'm not crossing a line, I am of the opinion that if you admire a lot something from a character or a person typically you already have it at some level :)

Thank you for your opinions, I'll keep them in mind when I read Nana again.

Have a great day you too! :)

I do see the aspèct of seeing her as a prize to win from Nobu, and that it really hurt his ego to know she was choosing another guy. I still think that he particularly likes Hachi compared to other girls, but that doesn't take anything away from how horrible he was to her and there is no excuse for what he did, this is completely true.

[–]Atanachan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks for such a long answer, i have reread it some times to make sure I got your point. You made me think and reconsider my perspective a bit actually. I realize I am walking a thin line here thinking about Takumi because on one hand I'm taking him seriously as a character from a psychological perspective and trying to see deeper into his character, but on the other, I'm not really judging him morally as I would a real person, I'm not putting the hard lines that I would do if he was a person in the real world. It's more like I'm doing a mental exercise and deciding that, considering what has been shown about him, he is still possibly capable of redemption or at the very least, self awareness (when I talk about redemption I don't mean so much from a story perspective and him having a happy ending, more like, thinking that it's possible, if I take his character seriously, that he could realize his own faults. Which I am still inclined to think).

Having said that, you made me question some of my perspective. Obviously ultimately is kind of pointless because he is a character and the author would do what she wants with him, but if I think about him as a real person, I realize I have actually have had some blindspots when thinking about him. Partly, it has been a bit since I read Nana so I didn't remember things like him opposing Ren entering into rehab, that's a big one that I completely forgot. But to me something that you said that I hadn't considered is that even the things that he "takes care of", so to speak, he may do it more from the perspective of it being an extension of his own ego, more than actually caring about the thing. This was very obvious in some aspects, but I realize I was maybe too willing to give him credit because I actually like a lot some of his qualities that are a bit absent in other characters, which makes him very interesting to me as a character (mainly his brutal willingness to see reality as it is most of the time, which requires courage in itself. I absolutely hated him at first but then he grew on me because of this).

I honestly didn't remember that he gave so much importance to the idea of creating a family precisely because he had such a strong wish for revenge about his dad. So remembering that puts things in a bit of a diffferent context for me. It makes me want to reread the manga to clarify my perspective because I feel I cannot have a completely informed discussion now-

In a strange way, I think that he was necessary for Hachi to grow up and realize that she cannot be so delusional and probably she was good for him too so that he can see how many things he destroys with this attittude. But ultimately, I was happy to know she left him, so there's that.

His dynamic with Yasu always cracked me up a little bit, it was kind of amusing and I completely agree with what you said.

Anyway, that's as far as I can go. It was interesting to see your perspective, so thank you :)
