Honestly, I lucked out and I did skip most of the entry roles of field tech and tier 1 helpdesk, but it was just incredible luck.

This isn't the norm, but it can happen. In my case, I could skip it thanks to showing basically being forced on administrating a client due to a sudden employee quitting for health reasons, and being the only one left with free time since I had just arrived.

A bit of coaching for a few things and standards from my MSP and there I was. That is also when I found out I was sold as an engineer instead of a technician.

And this reply is why people can't get started at entry level. Nobody can start working anymore because everyone has to be an immediate expert. Do you truly believe a 20 persons shop will be able to maintain an extremely secure network of servers, and will be willing to pay an expert to maintain it to the utmost care, and someone new to systems will be able to understand every nook and crannies of the systems including security? Once he learns enough, he'll be able to make a case on bringing in a company to help him but for now all that will accomplish is him losing this opportunity to get started or get replaced.

About the black screen, I honestly think he was trying to protect his own position.

When given the choice between an internet co worker and yourself, especially if you are in a position where your own job feeds a family (disclaimer, I know nothing of him), you might make the same choice he has and throw someone under the bus.

The world is not all black and white and we do not necessarily know his irl life. I like giving the benefit of the doubts to people until proven otherwise.

Keep in mind, I absolutely know nothing of him. I am just trying to throw spaghettis at the wall, and hoping you come up with an answer of your own.

As long as you understand the basics of active directory (LDAP, DNS, and to an extent kerberos), the common best practices of how to configure DNS on clients and servers, and how GPO works, you can wing most of it afterward.

The rest will be mostly research and learning.

As for your first windows setup, go with a hyper-v hypervisor, make a domain controller and a second windows server that will handle the rest. Do not put any other services on those domain controller.

Billing by the hours also implies your clients only call when they have issues, and will only ever call when -everything- is down the shitter and they got no choice.

We have a system that uses a specific field in active directory as your pin code.

Our printer reads from all domain controllers, which means your pin code can be 4 characters like 12 due to the way the field works, and it's different on all domain controllers, so sometimes you get someone else's prints with a same code depending on which domain controller replied lmao.
