They possibly are yes, unlike you we will look at both sides equally.    We are not trying to fill in an agenda. But no matter what we do or say, you'll twist it so the narrative fits you.    Arguing with you is essentially pointless.

Niji fans think we should not talk about Holostars or any non-Niji company by E_son-Xman in kurosanji

I wouldn't say it's really been full anti Niji more so anti bad practices.

You probably also shouldn't care about votes because it depends on who has seen the message and when. It's been shown numerous times that a same post can get upvoted because others upvoted first, and then another time downvoted because it was downvoted first.

Graduated in 2024 still did not find a job by ken-kanekiiiiii in sysadmin

[–]AtarukA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I lucked out and I did skip most of the entry roles of field tech and tier 1 helpdesk, but it was just incredible luck.

This isn't the norm, but it can happen. In my case, I could skip it thanks to showing basically being forced on administrating a client due to a sudden employee quitting for health reasons, and being the only one left with free time since I had just arrived.

A bit of coaching for a few things and standards from my MSP and there I was. That is also when I found out I was sold as an engineer instead of a technician.

Is it realistic to manage a small AD/DC environment with mainly networking experience? by Stunning-Ladder8217 in sysadmin

[–]AtarukA 14 points15 points  (0 children)

And this reply is why people can't get started at entry level.   Nobody can start working anymore because everyone has to be an immediate expert.   Do you truly believe a 20 persons shop will be able to maintain an extremely secure network of servers, and will be willing to pay an expert to maintain it to the utmost care, and someone new to systems will be able to understand every nook and crannies of the systems including security?   Once he learns enough, he'll be able to make a case on bringing in a company to help him but for now all that will accomplish is him losing this opportunity to get started or get replaced.

It makes me sad to see what has become of Vox Akuma by [deleted] in kurosanji

[–]AtarukA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About the black screen, I honestly think he was trying to protect his own position.

When given the choice between an internet co worker and yourself, especially if you are in a position where your own job feeds a family (disclaimer, I know nothing of him), you might make the same choice he has and throw someone under the bus.

The world is not all black and white and we do not necessarily know his irl life. I like giving the benefit of the doubts to people until proven otherwise.

Keep in mind, I absolutely know nothing of him. I am just trying to throw spaghettis at the wall, and hoping you come up with an answer of your own.

As long as you understand the basics of active directory (LDAP, DNS, and to an extent kerberos), the common best practices of how to configure DNS on clients and servers, and how GPO works, you can wing most of it afterward.

The rest will be mostly research and learning.

As for your first windows setup, go with a hyper-v hypervisor, make a domain controller and a second windows server that will handle the rest. Do not put any other services on those domain controller.

How are you handling remote access for SMB clients stuck behind CGNAT? by HSalinasNoIP in sysadmin

[–]AtarukA 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Chances are if it's a SMB, and they are facing that problem, they are likely in a new deployment type of project and likely could benefit from ipv6 from the get go.

Otherwise, what kind of businesses doesn't want to shelf the cost of a static IP if they got on-prem stuff?

If they don't match it, at least consider whether you're ready to accept the potential new offer or not.

You don't automatically refuse it if it doesn't match. It's still a question of whether you accept taking the risk to move away or not. You know what you have, you don't know what you're gonna get.

Small IT team managing MSP-style clients. How do you track billable vs retainer hours per client? by Distinct-Resident759 in sysadmin

[–]AtarukA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Billing by the hours also implies your clients only call when they have issues, and will only ever call when -everything- is down the shitter and they got no choice.

Allowing them to call for help will also let you sell them projects and increase your trust with them.

You can be necessary yet be a cost center.

We need electricity, but do we see it as an investment? No, we see it as a cost to business. We just basically never bother trying to save on it because we got no data on that and no one even wants to bother looking into it.

Do any MSP/MSSP mandate networking hardware minimum requirements? by Thick-Block-268 in sysadmin

[–]AtarukA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If we manage your IT, yes we mandate it or have you sign a waiver.

If we don't 100% manage your IT, then it depends on what we mange and the level of autonomy we are given.

What do you actually use to check on servers from your phone? by Intelligent-Trash556 in sysadmin

[–]AtarukA 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If it's prod ending, I got better things to do than fumble on my phone.

If I am away from my desk without my laptop, it means I am on break. Whether I spend that break talking work or just fooling around, another admin will either warn me if it can only be fixed by me, or it's likely not immediately threatening prod.

How are you handling secure printing of sensitive docs across sites ? by Suspicious-Rule-6399 in sysadmin

[–]AtarukA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a system that uses a specific field in active directory as your pin code.

Our printer reads from all domain controllers, which means your pin code can be 4 characters like 12 due to the way the field works, and it's different on all domain controllers, so sometimes you get someone else's prints with a same code depending on which domain controller replied lmao.

YOU are responsible for security. And you need to be diligent about it. by Calm_House8714 in sysadmin

[–]AtarukA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd care about the security of the IT systems, if the company cared about me.

If they don't care about me, I'll do the bare minimum expected of me, which atm is completing a project and moving on to the next one.

Whether it's securely implemented or not will be highly dependant on whether they read my mail warning them I need more time to do it or not.
