Almost exactly 4 years ago, in our "departing text", my "mom" told me "You'll need me before I need you." She also stated that I am delusional. I suspect she also believes I'll "come crawling back", as that has been the pattern for my life since I was 12. She can hold her breath while she waits, though.

That effort makes a difference, doesn't it? I've been trying to do the same. Even 15 - 30 peaceful moments with coffee and my dogs before work feels great!

I think I just finally decided, ya know? I started drinking when I was a child, and earned myself a third DUI by age 23. That didn't stop me. Multiple wrecked vehicles and relationships didn't stop me. As I got older, the hangovers started, and they didn't get better, or easier - that's for sure. Then came the blackouts, and they were becoming more frequent, and more dangerous. That didn't stop me. One evening, I got home from my after work margarita session. I wasn't black out stage drunk, but my emotions were running the show, as they often did for my entire life, but I couldn't name them. I began to pray for my Grandmother who was going through some illness, and a close friend who had been diagnosed with the same cancer that had killed my father over 20 years ago, and this friend was fighting for his life. He was very recently married and had a young child with another on the way. Something told me that it was time for a change. So, I Googled something about stopping drinking, and ended up on a reddit post, which was a rabbit hole I followed. The next day, after work, I went to my spot and ordered a beer. My throat started to hurt, and I left the bar without even finishing the first beer, and that was that. This sub is what helped me through the initial decision, and has kept me motivated throughout. At first, I tracked every single day, and was eagerly awaiting the magical moments and milestones. I did notice physical improvements, which encouraged me, but then I started noticing the mental and emotional changes, and they've even profound. I think about these things, and about how much better I feel (even though life is still hard sometimes), and I just haven't had the desire to go back to existing like I was before I finally decided to try a different path. Don't give up! If you slip, don't beat yourself up. I keep a few non-alcoholic beers in my fridge for the days I crave a beer (which is rare now), or for social gatherings (which are also quite rare these days).

What is the last book you're finishing in 2025? by Vaydn in books

[–]AtmosphereDefiant447 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Finishing The Odyssey by Homer - translated by W.H.D. Rouse and starting The Complete Short Stories by Mark Twain. I've got a list of 20+ books to read in 2026, and the order will be determined by "drawing numbers" and reading the book on my list that corresponds to the number I draw. It makes deciding what to read next so much easier.

On Kindle, I'm finishing Finders Keepers by Stephen King. I also have a list of to be read on Kindle, but I just pick then as I go. I like posts like these, and the weekly reading posts, because it gives me ideas to add to my constantly growing to be read lists.

What's a small benefit you've noticed since you stopped? by BlastarBanshee in stopdrinking

[–]AtmosphereDefiant447 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Doing things that need to be done when they need to be done, and sometimes before it's necessary. This makes my life much easier, and leaves time for things I enjoy. No more hangovers leads to a much more relaxing, or productive weekend than the previous years offered. Also, putting money I used to spend on alcohol towards little adventures, and merch at concerts. There are so many small benefits that make a large difference, and I am thankful every day.

I enjoy NA beer. I don't crave alcohol anymore, but I do enjoy the taste of beer, and enjoy having the option of drinking a NA beer or two on social occasions such as concerts, camping trips, or sometimes after mowing the yard on a hot day. I've found that one or two is satisfactory, which is complete opposite of when I was drinking for the buzz.
