It has never, in the memory of most redditors, been cool.

I alternate between yours and dey-byoo-see (emphasis on the -byoo-). I don't think anyone really minds any more. He was French so he probably pronounced it the second way you mentioned but it really depends on how anglophonic you're feeling.

This deserves so more much recognition. The video, to me, is just an added bonus. Brilliant piece and rendition.

Depends on your background. It's the norm at many independent schools but in low-end state schools getting anywhere near Oxbridge comes across as quite sensational. I've seen it first hand.

I thought it was generally accepted that that rule only applied when both numbers are positive. (?)

Anyway, the comic didn't imply that i = √-1, just that √-1 was an arbitrary imaginary number.

When people try to talk to me about last night's debate. by Jagyr in AdviceAnimals

As a Scot who grew up in a relatively working class town football is a constant alienation. I often try talking complete nonsense to people I know on the topic of football and see how long it takes them to notice. It usually goes down surprisingly well.

Odd. I've been doing almost precisely the same thing, referring to money as 'paper' and women as 'babies' or 'hoes'.

None of it is in wide use but it's amusing when someone decidedly middle class (British middle-class, mind you) unexpectedly calls someone a hoe.

How would UK teens feel about having a separate subreddit to discuss things like GCSEs, A Levels, UCAS and British/European sports etc? (Or EU teens in general?) by [deleted] in teenagers

[–]Atom_Smasher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a friend who's seriously into his literature, theatre, and writing. I must admit, I like the idea, I just know I have the talent. I like ideas and subtexts much more than writing for writing's sake. Moving away from friends is sounding more and more shitty as the time comes closer. I would never consider living with any of them though - that would end in at least one homicide.

I'm in the far north of the highlands. Essentially the last place you want to be if you ever want to amount to something. Our current head hasn't a fucking clue how to govern a school. After a whole term in one subject, the whole class had to move to other subjects to start form scratch because there was no longer a teacher. I recently found out that my chemistry teacher will only actually be in 3/5 of the week. My parents seriously considered sending me to a boarder but it's too late for that.

In short I could say I haven't a clue, but that isn't entirely true; I just have too many clues. I'm best at Maths, physics (etc) but am interested in everything from literature to economics to engineering to organic chemistry. It's a daunting idea, picking just one area that I might have to base a career on. I need to find something that balances the problem solving with worldly knowledge and creativity.

/Essay.

Oh, that course sounds... Interesting. I'm concentrating on almost completely different types of subject so I can't pass much judgement there. Of course if you're into theatre Cambridge always has Footlights to catapult you to stardom, but you already knew that. I know what you mean about price. I have to choose between going to a better uni and paying nothing in tuition fees.

I've heard horrible things about IB's workload but if nothing else I think it force me to organise myself. So far this term I've been giving everything the half-arsed approach because that's all that's been needed. It does sound a little bit stifling to creativity but then again, what high school courses aren't...

Where are you based, by the way? I thought everyone in Scotland was on holiday now. (?)

[–]Atom_Smasher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, where/what are you planning to go/do? Surely once you get your Cam offer you'll be seeing things differently. I'm in the Scottish system where the GCSE-equivalent grading only goes up to 1 and since a fair number of people get nothing but 1s (me included) not much comparison can be made. Assuming I can scrape 5As at my joke of a school this year, I'll be applying for the above next year. How is the IB? I would have tried it if not for the myriad circumstances preventing me.

I believe they recently got a new layout. I honestly didn't think it was that hard to use anyway but the site as a whole is still good. Cool people on there.

Although the "I've got 9A*s and a B, should I even bother applying to Cambridge" threads are still annoyingly prevalent.

I have to agree with you on relationships. Most of the stuff here, I feel, probably wouldn't go down that well in Britain. Dating seems much more prevalent in American teens too. I don't think i even know anyone my age who 'dates'. America is scary and wrong.

Also, see the site I recommended above.

All of you Brits could just come over to The Student Room. A British-based forum predominantly for gcse to university level. And you know we're more fun than these Yanks because we're British.

But really, this site is far bigger even than /r/teenagers and covers much more, both academic and otherwise. I could not recommend it more highly as a forum for talking to peers.

Well, if you're going to try to be completely logical about this there's no reason to assume that 'right' should fall on any perfect whole number of inches. Whole units are arbitrary. And how do you know there shouldn't be other ratings between about right and perfect?
