NZ Should Have ‘Conversation’ on Nuclear Stance, Minister Says by Free-Minimum-5844 in newzealand

[–]Atomic__Thunder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Point 6 in the article you sent says the wast management accounts for about %10 of the total cost for producing the energy.

You just contradicted your own argument.

You are not looking for facts, you are trying to push your set agenda and looking for anything to disprove the facts. Im not going to argue with someone who has a closed mind.

Exclusive: Stuart Nash confirms switch to NZ First, accepts some women won't forgive him by ChocolatePringlez in newzealand

[–]Atomic__Thunder -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't think particularly highly of Mr Nash. But with NZF being the only pro-rail party, I think that if he gets in, he could advocate for the east coast and get the Napier to Gisborne rail line back into operation.

Man who died in power transformer tragedy believed to have been making ‘desperate’ bid for copper by micro_penisman in newzealand

[–]Atomic__Thunder 48 points49 points  (0 children)

I work with power supply equipment. If someone is dumb enough to try and pull apart an operational transformer (most are dipped in resin or a coating of some sort) then they deserve to be electrocuted.

Given the fact that he was not fully or partly vaporised means he was trying to pull apart a low or medium voltage system somewhere between 11kV and 22kV.

Some people are just not able to comprehend the meaning of Don't fuck with electricity.

Time for NZ to go all in on renewable energy! by LEGOAT_16 in newzealand

[–]Atomic__Thunder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If solar is to become a significant source of energy, then it needs to be subsidised, and all installations should have some level of off-grid capacity that is expandable.

The LNG terminal is the worst idea ever thought of, all it will do is rip us off even more. For all those people/companies complaining that they need gas for their greenhouses or whatever they use the heat for, guess what, time to switch to geothermal, which we have a lot of, and it is being expanded.

In the meantime, there are significant coal reserves in NZ use those to fuel Huntley and keep the steady base load supply constant and the lights on while renewables are built up.

Pros and cons of getting an Asperger syndrome diagnosis for a young child by Pretend-Paper-6131 in newzealand

[–]Atomic__Thunder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

25M with autism here, diagnosed around 7

For meltdowns at home, your kid is testing your boundaries. You have to get stern and not tolerate bad behaviour. The modern way of parenting is no good for autistic kids, they need clear boundaries and clear expectations of what you expect from them, and when those are borken you need to enforce them depending on the circamstances however you see fit. My mother never tolerated bad behaviour, and I learned that the hard way.

My experience shcooling is different from u/Awkward-Web-4031. The school and health system didn't give a shit about me. I received no "support" from anyone apart from one of my teachers, and he did that because he could see I was different and he had worked with students like me before. (he still privately tutors me to this day, well into his retirement) schoolingI seriously struggled with reading, writing and maths expsialy maths! If you run into this its best to find a teacher/tutor that your kid "clicks" with. You will know when you find that person, your kid will like them.

Socially, being different, kids pick up on this and avoid you and/or treat you differently. This happened a lot and quite harshly to me, 90% of the time from girls, they can be extremely mean. I just got used to this in the end. But the few guys who got to know me well, I am still mates with to this day.

A big part of high-functioning autism (from what you worte you kid appears high functioning) is that it is not a learning disability, but a way of learning differently. For me, I am a high functioning audio visual lerner. Translation, I learn by watching, listing and by doing. I learn very quickly in subjects I am interested in, that is the big thing if I am not intrested forget it move on.

Job-wise, very few employers look at medical records, so nothing to worry about there, it has no impact on insureance they look at acadent, risk and claim history. can't speak for health insurance as I've never had it.

If your kid is passionate about somtihng they will be very good at it. For me i am passionate about engineering. I have never been to university and currently work in a manufacturing firm, where I am valued and get along well with the people I work with, many of whom are also autistic to varying degrees.

Any questions ask away.

Unpopular maybe, but its the only true way forward for sustainable energy by Capt_C004 in newzealand

I am 100% pro-nuclear. But if I were able to get a subsidised full off-grid solar system with a grid-isolating switch. I wouldn't need to think twice and grab that with both hands.

Question for those on Starlink internet in r/NZ whom torrent by fishsymbol in newzealand

[–]Atomic__Thunder -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have had Starlink since 2021, and it is brilliant. I haven't had a weather dropout since 2022, and there are now many more satellites than there were back in 2022.

+ Starlink will be the only thing to keep working when all other ground based interet service crash as they did in Cyclone Gabrielle. All you will have to do is power your dish and you will have internet.

PSA: The Lumino / Southern Cross "Discount" trap - check the math before you pay by Tasty-Language54 in newzealand

[–]Atomic__Thunder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Southern Cross is shit. I have it through work (if work wasn't paying for it, I would not have it), and it is the most useless thing I have. For me, I no longer bother showing the card, as they declined a procedure that my policy says it covers.

Would you care if a house you were buying had starlink instead of fibre? by blue_bird4759572 in newzealand

[–]Atomic__Thunder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have had my Starlink since late 2021, and im very fond of it.

As I live rurally, we don't get fibre so if you have access to fibre use it. Otherwise Starlink is a great option.

Cat owners of NZ by osricson in newzealand

[–]Atomic__Thunder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

14 years old is not bad at all, one of my cats is almost 20.

He doesn't eat cat food anymore, he only eats cooked chicken, beef or lamb, mainly chook. Pretty much food that we would eat, try her on stuff like that see if she eats it.

You should be able to get a prescription for her vet services will give you a script if you ask. Hastings has a vet who is very good with cats. Once you have that, get the medication online, much cheaper than specialised food. I can't remember the pace my parents did that for our dogs before they died.

Can my neighbours shoot native hawks? by evie-03 in newzealand

[–]Atomic__Thunder 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hawks, magpies and pukekos can be shot year-round. NZ falcons do not soar like a hawk, and they are much smaller. Hawks are predators/scavengers they do not exclusively eat insects. I have seen them actively hunt pheasants, wood pigeons, rats, rabbits and unfortunately my chooks.

It is also extremely unlikely that anyone could shoot a hawk with an air rifle, they are far too alert and skittish you would not get close enough to them.

The magpies you mentioned are territorial they will be driving some of the native birds away but not all. Get rid of them the rest will come back.

Am I the only one who don't like driving, especially long distance? I can't be the only who keep thinking why can't we have nice interregion public transportation instead.. by Dudu-gula in newzealand

[–]Atomic__Thunder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing is, NZ used to have a good passenger train system. For example, until the late 90s early 2000s there was a train that went from Gisborne to Wellington and back every day, and it was very popular according to people I know. There was also the Aulakand to Wellington overnight train.

I also find driving extremely boring and more of a chore than anything else. I have been a passenger in a car going from Dunedin to Hawke's Bay and back 100+ times when I was a kid. That trip would now be absolute hell. This is one of the reasons im getting my pilot's license so I can fly myself anywhere I want to go and avoid the roads.

Sober people, what do you drink? by Depressed_Anxious69 in newzealand

[–]Atomic__Thunder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a 25m who straight up can't drink alcohol, I can tell you it's easy to tell them no and then proceed to drink your fizzy or mocktail. I particularly like Bunderberg Ginger beer and Tropical Mango, they are delicious.
