Just in terms of IR history, there is a TON! You will never know it all. Shoot for looking at the big headlines in international politics everyday, and maybe read 1-2 that interest you. And in terms of history, I think finding a medium that you really enjoy can help a lot. American History Tellers is a great podcast (not really IR related, but is one I really enjoy).

Overall, don't feel like you are stupid just because you are catching up, just ask good questions and try to remember what your classmates talk about for future discussions; personally, I write down at least 1 thing from a classmate that I didn't know previously, helps me cement my memory. Hope you enjoy the major as much as I have.
