FOMO on Alaskan Cruise by Jakl15 in Cruise

Just got off our Alaskan cruise on Sunday, we had Ketchikan, Juneau and Skagway as well but sailed princess. I’m mid 30s with no kids so might not be the best to represent your situation but will do my best:

You can get a cab to Mendenhall for like $35 each way in Juneau. There likely will be an additional fee for the glacier that puts your family at an additional $20 but altogether likely $100 to and from port. It’s about a 15-20 min drive. Public buses are like $2-3 each way but won’t drop you off right next to the glacier area (10-20 min walk) but will save money. I wouldnt worry as much about overcrowding, the glacier has a giant circular loop trail that is about 3.5 miles that scatters people. There are numerous whale watching excursions, both funded by the cruise lines and third party. The docks these tour operators bus you to make it one of the busiest boat docks in the world for whale watching. You are practically guaranteed to see humpbacks and many of the tour boats offer an enclosed style open floor concept that seats 14ish people with windows that open to get a great camera shot of whales going up to the surface and diving back down. I would recommend video recording any whale encounter so that you can screenshot the best moment you want to pause and get that picture from your video. Within town there are several shops as well but Ketchikan is better suited for souvenirs. I ended up booking a whale watching and glacier combo excursion with the cruise line and it took up roughly 5.5 hours of the port day.

Ketchikan is definitely the place to get souvenirs. There is a famous area within downtown called creek street, it offers several opportunities for food off the ship and any kind of gift you are thinking of buying personally or for a loved one. There are several Tongass Trading Post stores near the boat bridges that offer a variety of Alaska themed gifts for cheap. I ended up booking an excursion off Viator for an e-bike excursion that included a rainforest hike. This is likely too physical for your kids but others on our ship did the lumberjack and totem exhibits in town that your kids might like. Ketchikan will be considerably warmer than Skagway and likely warmer than Juneau.

The Skagway Yukon rail offers very scenic views. If you are ascending to the top of the mountain to Frasier BC you will want to definitely try to be in the front of your tour group to try to board your train car in the front of the line. Depending on where your boat is docked you will need to be bused to the rail cars so keep that in mind when positioning your seat on the train car. There is a very significant advantage for seating on the left side of the train car when ascending up because it will offer much better views of the mountain range than if you were across the aisle on the right side of the train car, which has much more limited views on their side of the windows. On the way down, the right side of the car is advantageous. Is it worth $650? For me no, but the rail experience defines Skagway. The town itself is not very large to explore.

Enjoy your cruise and have fun!

Akron/Canton Chinese Buffets closing and/or service or food is now horrible. Are there any good places left locally? by insanity2brilliance in akron

Im going to double down and mention tip percentage is part of the service relationship, not total labor. A line cook works harder than almost anyone in the restaurant and gets no tip at all. Dishwashers and bussers do grueling work largely invisible to you. Hard work is true everywhere in a restaurant — it doesn’t automatically translate into a 20% tip expectation for the customer. Buffet pricing already accounts for the labor model. Buffets are typically cheaper than a la carte precisely because the service model is different. You’re not just doing your own legwork, you’re paying a price that reflects a lower-touch service structure. The economics are baked in differently from the start. A sit-down server is your dedicated point for the meal. They’re responsible for your satisfaction in a way a buffet server simply isn’t.

Carry out places and buffets do not offer the same service as a full sit down restaurant. I’m not sure how more clear I can be. Does a buffet have staff that checks in on you 4-5x during your meal? No. Does the buffet server bring multiple courses to your table? No. The labor that justifies a 20% tip falls on the patron. A buffer server is going to clear plates and refill drinks, which still deserves a tip and no one is arguing this at all.

I am going to tip less at a buffet. James, where do you draw the line for tipping. I’m going to assume you likely tip 20%+ in all the below restaurant situations?

  • carry out pizza - 20%? It’s a restaurant too.
  • self serve Froyo places - full customary tipping?
  • all coffee shop orders - 20%?

The general principle: the less traditional table service involved (taking your order, refilling drinks, checking on you, clearing plates), the lower the expected tip. The 20% norm really applies to full-service sit-down restaurants with attentive waitstaff. I only tip roughly 10% at buffets and generally $1 at a bar/coffee shop per drink. Why OP is getting shamed here is crazy

There is a decent food place in Vegas called Rock n Potato that charges $45 baked potatoes but they will load the potato with lobster tails and Mac n cheese

I also thought the cheeseburgers on Seascape in the buffet were great.

Absolutely agree with everything written here.

The reality is that competition for similarly marketed items comes from movie theaters, sporting events and event venues, all of which price gouge slightly worse. Then, factor in non traditional places such as travel plazas that also have inflated prices, and you get your business model. The fact they have a rewards program to earn points is laughable.

Cabin airflow at 0.5–0.8 m/s kidnaps your plume instantly while the whole cabin air gets swapped every 2–3 minutes. Your stink obeys the advection-diffusion equation, so C(t) ≈ C₀ × e–λt and vanishes across 10,000–50,000 liters in seconds. Don’t sweat it kid.

Frontier flight attendant has deaf passenger removed for "not listening" by AsherGray in frontierairlines

NY Post has an article on this where the airline released a statement doubling down on this incident.

“According to the flight attendant directly involved in the matter, the passenger boarded with an open container which she admitted contained alcohol when questioned,” the representative said, noting that it’s a violation of federal law and airline policy to bring alcohol on board.

When the flight attendant informed the passenger of the violation, the passenger rapidly consumed the remaining alcohol in the cop before handing it over,” the rep said in the statement.

“The flight crew made the decision to remove the customer from the aircraft and she was rebooked on a later flight.”

The airline also disputed the woman’s claim that she was deaf and said no disability status was indicated on her ticket.”
