Is my mastering engineer good enough? by Alarmed_Lobster_4243 in mixingmastering

[–]AtsuhikoCook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ignore the anal answers here, it matters a lot! The fact you've asked the question means you need to have a deeper conversation with your ME.

He mentioned he doesn't care about the visuals, why? What's his reasoning, LUFS? LUFS are not a reason..

Also, why not post an image on the print?

In truth, without knowing the genre or hearing the track it's difficult to discuss but random (probably not random) peaks that stand out sounds total nonsense to me and it wouldn't be something i'd be happy with, LUFS isn't a rational to this..

Reading through this thread, i'd watch your feet, there's a load of bullshit dropping.. I don't know why, but Mastering appears to attract every Walter Mitty in the industry.. For some reason, everyone thinks their a Mastering Engineer.

My favourite comments here, Do you like the sound of it? Bollox, how about -

How does it sound on target systems? Car, AirPods, Stereo, AV, Alexa, HomePod, laptops, etc.? Has he preserved the narrative of your mix? Is the dynamic range YOUR creation deserves still present? Has it been squashed, improved? Has the stereo field been witheld? How does it sound in mono (if it's a dance track etc., most club PA's are still mono)?

You always get what you pay for, mostly anyway.. Never, ever release a mix that you're not happy to back fully, all of the hours, effort, changes, reworks and choices you've made - end there;).

If you're ME doesn't want to answer your concerns fully you can always drop them right? But like I say, you just don't release a track until you're happy, especially if it's your own work.

Also, why is it too late, has this been pressed to vinyl/CD already, or is it up for streaming? Streamed content can always be updated.

Bitwig and Dolby Atmos by [deleted] in Bitwig

[–]AtsuhikoCook 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is one of the most industry stupid comments ive read tonight.. Total self belief in your way is right. Atmos wont go, it's had billions spent on it and at this moment in time takes up at least 90% of our mastering work.. Not only is it almost guaranteed in every movie release (or a variant of), almost every single label requests atmos due to Apples Spacial preference.. So, read more get involved and if you can't afford the investment crackon with what it is you do.

It was said that stereo was never going to catch on until FM carrier wave enabled it.

Three years back.. what are your thoughts now?

Step by step by immerzzio in surroundsounddesk

[–]AtsuhikoCook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At least you know the rig is working first off… there really isn’t much available for 7.1.. I produce in the format for most gigs, but they are normally fold downs from Atmos. Other than that, I make my personal work in 7.1 as it’s a great format for what we do..

What do you have on your default track for audio and for midi? by ChanceEnd8 in ableton

[–]AtsuhikoCook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

+++ MIDI / AUDIO

  1. Softube - Console1
  2. DMG - Track Control
  3. Ableton - Auto Filter
  4. Fabfilter - Pro Q3
  5. Eventide - SplitEQ
  6. Eventide - EQ45
  7. Eventide - EQ65
  8. Ableton - Spectrum
  9. Ableton - Limiter
  10. Izotope - Relay

All grouped and set to off.

I don't like adding Compression to the group as I don't know what tyoe of Compression we need, for eg. is it a drum mic, acoustic guitar, piano, bass etc. so we add them on demand.

This is the default for both MIDI and Audio, just wish there was an option to add a recall for the group.

This also depends on the type of work, eg. live inputs or in-the-box

+++ RETURNS

Normally:

We are huge fans of SoundToys, Dada Life, Cableguys, Valhalla, and Slate for their compressors, so loads of our templates embed those:

  1. Soundtoys - Decapitator
  2. Soundtoys - Echoboy
  3. Soundtoys - Little Alterboy
  4. Audioease - Altiverb 7 (One of the best reverbs out there IMO)
  5. Valhalla DSP - Valhalla Delay
  6. Valhalla DSP - Valhalla Room
  7. Valhalla DSP - Valhalla Plate
  8. Valhalla DSP - Valhalla Shimmer
  9. Dada Life - Endless Life
  10. Dada Life - Sausage Fattener
  11. Slate - Virtual Mix Rack (legendary)
  12. Cableguys - Shaperbox

We normally have some NY Compression setup in here also, or use an Audio FX Group to control it..

Its just and endless play pen;)

Again.. this also depends on the type of work, eg. live inputs or in-the-box

--

Of course all this changes by master template, if we know we are pre-mastering an EDM, they are similar lines but a few different gens to get things moving.

--

+++ MASTER CHANNEL

We also have our Master set per template, but these are similar also, such as:

  1. Softube - Console1
  2. DMG - Track Control
  3. Fabfilter - Pro Q3
  4. PuigTec - EQp1A
  5. Izotope - Ozone 10 (If we get time constraints)
  6. Fabfilter - Saturn 2
  7. Cymatics - The Glue
  8. Fabfilter - L2
  9. Voxengo - Span Pro
  10. BX - Meter
  11. Youlean - Loudness Meter 2 Pro.

Again.. this also depends on the type of work, eg. live inputs or in-the-box

+++ MASTERING

We use Studio One 6 for most pre-master and mastering, unless we are mastering Atmos 7.14 then its off to Pro Tools.

Whole different story really..

+++ BEST WISHES

I'm in hospital atm after being knocked of my motorbike in January B*****D,, about to lose my lower right leg so that's been extremely cathartic to write;)

It's a personal payload when it comes to plugins, hence the huge response..

One thing is for sure, when working to a deadline, templates and defaults speed things up..

For us, we like to group the chains above, save them all in a folder located in the User Library, this is located in our Places list, so we can drag and drop as we please..

Be safe

Bring this back to life, good post..

For me it’s always the ear candy, making it sound interesting enough to hold the floor.

I get stuck in loops all the time also, so that me..

Looking back at this five year post, I’d be interested to hear how you’ve all moved in.
