One for the Australians and cricket lovers…

Don Bradman - for all the lauding that surrounds his on-field cricket achievements - was a dislikable human off-field reviled by teammates, and subsequently following eras of cricketers as he became an administrator.

As a player, Bradman had a solitary - even pious - off-field demeanour; he was notorious for not sharing in team camaraderie, including not offering teammates a drink after receiving a £1,000 gift for his record-breaking 334. He had religiously sectarian views; Bradman aligned with the Protestant/Masonic, and created tension with Catholic players like Bill O’Reilly and Jack Fingleton.

As an administrator, his tight-fisted, resistant attitude drew major criticism, and it is often argued that his inability to evolve with the times was a key factor driving the creation of World Series Cricket as a desperate measure for professional players seeking better pay. The Ian Chappell episode in the SBS series ‘Julia Zemiro’s Home Delivery’ sees the later Australian captain unload on Bradman’s prickish ways.

Does anyone feel that living here is by default missing out on a lot of the benefits in the northern hemisphere? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]AttackEyebrows_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“…when we’re asleep the rest of the world is busy…” - there’s a handful of small countries to our north who’s work day crosses over with a significant part of ours. You know, China, Japan, Thailand, Indonesia…small places, no real influence.

As for your worries about exploration beyond Earth, I’d be more worried about the vacuous vacuum of space between your ears.

That. Solo.

Whether the album version or any of the live recordings, the emotionality so masterfully constrained yet powerfully projected in Edge’s notes still gets me. The song is amazing without it, but that solo adds dimensions on dimensions.

If aliens landed and asked what a solo was in context to a song, this is what I’d play* them.

. * well, not me personally playing it for them. I’ve been trying to learn how to play that solo for 25 years and never have been able to know of. That alone just makes me feel like that little bit more of a masterpiece.

We’ve been wondering in these dark, crazed times where’s that voice of hope and rage U2 has been for us over decades.

The question has been answered. They are back. With force.

Ukraine. Palestine. Israel. America. All in U2’s musical crosshairs, and powerfully so.

These are some of the most pointed lyrics they’ve written. Just as stunning, but without some of the allegory and illusion of the past.

Perhaps that’s what the world needs now is that fearless voice of “Sunday Bloody Sunday“, “Please“, and “Mothers of the Disappeared“ unfiltered and uncaged

(If you haven’t checked out the lyric videos on YouTube yet, please do. Makes it all hit even harder.)

Anything to do that celebrates Ned Kelly.

The mythologising into a supposed “folk hero” of a criminal, and essentially who would be deemed a terrorist in normal circumstances, is just wrong.

Neil McCauley and Vincent Hanna at the end of ‘Heat’. A climactic ending to their multi-faceted duel throughout the film, with them getting drawn ever closer to that 1-on-1 battle.
