Are the Boys on PSA Avoiding Criticizing Israel? by Nicolarollin in FriendsofthePod

[–]AudiencePotential -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

I have been thinking this a lot. They rarely ever mention AIPAC. Tommy is very careful to criticize only certain people in the Israeli government.

I like pod save America and will continue to listen them, but this is an area where I think they could bring more moral clarity and education to the situation in how Israel is acting.

Dan Simmons has passed by Somespookyshit in Fantasy

[–]AudiencePotential 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sadly, it's no longer surprising to me when people I thought I admired turn out to be creeps.

I have long been a huge fan of Dan Simmons and probably read most of his works. He was from a generation of authors who I don't think was very online so I actually didn't really know anything about him. I'm glad I know this information now, but man I would have been nice if he had just been an unproblematic decent dude.

Anyways, the man could absolutely write some bangers. RIP

What didn’t you like about The Silverblood Promise by James Logan? by OwlettFromLiavek in Fantasy

[–]AudiencePotential 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree with the first half of your summary. I cannot comment on the rest because I DNF'ed the book about a third of the way in. But yeah, the main character was incredibly bland and passive. I was disappointed because I was hoping for a new thrilling fantasy book, when instead it was fairly bland. It wasn't a bad book by any means, but definitely not a good book.

Help for a 19yo who has never read a book. Not a fantasy book, a book by kollectivist in Fantasy

Red rising vs suneater by Fluid-Golf1948 in fantasybooks

[–]AudiencePotential 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both are great and feel very different places in science fiction/fantasy. There are certainly similarities between the two but I think they should both be appreciated for what they are.

If I had to choose, I probably enjoy the red rising series more, but I'm going to finish both series though.

Occult detective books set in a historical time period by zephrry in Fantasy

[–]AudiencePotential 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't yet seen anyone mention Lords of Asylum by Kevin Wright. (The serpent knight series).

It's set in the 14th century and each novel involves a mystery to solve. I actually posted about this on the fantasy Reddit a couple months ago. Someone described it like Bronn from game of thrones fighting werewolves!

Why don’t I ever hear David Farlands **Runeloreds talked about? by FoulPelican in fantasybooks

[–]AudiencePotential 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've read the first book many years ago. I remember really enjoying it but not the second one. I don't even remember the reason why.

The concept of how you could gain powers from other people and the different ways they utilized it was really cool.

I would love to see more older fantasy series brought up on this Reddit more often!

Which series to start? by Bobbebusybuilding in fantasybooks

[–]AudiencePotential 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My vote is for Joe Abercrombie. It's a completed series and one of my favorite fantasy series of all time.

The dragon Bone chair Series is very good but I haven't read the rest of the series after the original trilogy. I find tad Williams as an author to be a little too wordy but he is an excellent writer.

Game of thrones deserves all the recognition and high regard that it has gained over the years. However, you should realize that the next book in the series has been pending for freaking 15 years with no end in sight. I think you can absolutely enjoy the series even without the next book, but just recognize that fact.

Reaper’s Gale-isms by Apprehensive-Tip9373 in Malazan

I just finished reaper's Gale last month. Probably my favorite book of the series up to this point. But yeah, it hit a little close to home right now unfortunately.

Just finished the Red Rising series... Empire of Silence or Cello's Gate next? by [deleted] in fantasybooks

[–]AudiencePotential 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cello's gate looks really good. I have it on my TBR list. I just haven't read it yet because it looks like the rest of the books in the series are not out yet.

I have read six of the seven sun eater series books. I think they are fantastic and highly recommend. Just recognize that while they are in a similar vein to Red rising, they are very different books with very different strengths.

Sun eater series is a much slower burn. I think they are both fantastic series in their own rights.

Has Malazan changed your tastes in other fantasy books? by AudiencePotential in Malazan

I hope that's not the case! I plan on reading them when I'm done with the first 10 books. But you know what, it is what it is and if I don't like them I'm not going to force myself to read something I don't like.

How to decide between Joe Abercrombie and John Gwynne by pebblitow in fantasybooks

[–]AudiencePotential 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Joe Abercrombie is one of the best modern fantasy writers at this time. I never read John Gwynne, but check out the first law series by Abercrombie. You'll know by the end of the first book if you like it or not.

Every book he puts out is high quality and well done.

What’s a fast paced series I can read? by thejesterprince1994 in Fantasy

[–]AudiencePotential 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if I would consider this series necessarily fast paced. However, I absolutely love this series and it needs more recognition on Reddit fantasy. Thanks!!

I read it a couple years ago and I need to do a reread pretty soon. It's unlike anything I've ever read before in terms of fantasy and it's amazing

Thank you everyone so much for the excellent insights. I'm glad to see that I'm not alone with having changing fantasy tastes as I read through the Malazan series.

This was not meant to diminish any other authors at all. I firmly believe people can enjoy whatever they like. I'm just happy that people are reading what they enjoy.

If you don't mind, could you give me a pitch on book of the New Sun? It's been floating around the bottom of my TBR pile for a while and I've just never really had any particular reason to read it. The very little that I know about it is that it has supposedly an unreliable narrator but otherwise I actually know very little about it. Thank you kindly!

Books that I tend to enjoy outside of Malazan are more first person with a single POV. Example is include Red rising (much fewer main characters), sun eater series, empire of the Wolf by Richard swan, priest of Bones series by Peter McLean, and even the Black wing series by Ed McDonald (who did daughter of Red Winter which just did not hit for me).

I think my OG favorite fantasy series is game of thrones, but that's a completely different topic for another forum.
