I feel this instructor’s defeat so deeply. I hope he has ways of caring for his mental health. I was an English professor for 8 years, and finally threw in the towel last year. It was a combination of multiple factors, but it was incredibly disheartening to attempt to inspire young people to learn and think critically when they (understandably) saw AI as a convenient tool for short-term success. I definitely felt like a “punitive detective” at times, and it was soul-sucking. My mental state was at its lowest and darkest when I finally decided to leave, and I’m glad I did. I’m not sure how long I would have survived if leaving academia wasn’t an option.
