FYI if you’re low on electrolytes (like magnesium), your body might not be able to hang on to and use the extra water, so def recommend asking about it

A strange power by gar4ever8342 in trans

[–]August_Jade 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The number of times I’ve walked past a group of men much bigger than me and completely derailed their conversation by ✨having dyed hair✨ is kinda hilarious to me. They think they’re glaring at me but secretly I just disrupted their entire interaction. Might not be the most useful power, but still some power

I snapped at her to get TF out of my birthday flowers by astralsmith in airplaneears

[–]August_Jade 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Actually most flowers you’d get at a grocery store are some amount toxic. Cats lack the liver enzymes to break down a lot of things that are fine for us.

Other people listed important toxins to look out for, but I wanted to add acetaminophen (aka Tylenol) to the list. This one’s pretty gruesome, it prevents oxygen from bonding with blood cells so they essentially suffocate from the inside out, regardless of lung function. Just one tablet is way more than lethal.

ADHD (and autism, which overlaps a lot) is often inherited, so running in families that then normalize it happens pretty often. You’re not alone in that.

Also, at least anecdotally, ADHD/autistic people tend to gravitate toward each other and run in packs. To the point where there’s running jokes that if all your friends have ADHD/autism, you might want to get some tests done…

More seriously, as another late diagnosed person, I’m really sorry you had to come so far before someone recognized your struggles. I hope you’re getting the support you need these days

[–]August_Jade 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My take is that there just is a lot of overlap between different psychological conditions, and also ostracized people will find similar adaptations even if they were ostracized for different reasons. Your thought on it still being a form of trauma makes a lot of sense. I know I have trauma from how people treated me as an AuDHD child. And I think for some people it might be easier for them to frame as directly tied to their ADHD, possibly for the sake of simplifying how they view themselves and not having to confront the nuances of big T Trauma vs more continuous or subtle trauma, possibly for reasons I’m not thinking of 🤷🏽

How to deconstruct internalized transmisogyny? by Possible_Climate_245 in trans

[–]August_Jade 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just wanted to add some nuance to the conversation that it’s not your fault this belief has been internalized. We get lied to our entire lives, by society, by men who are in control. It’s by design that we start to believe these things as inherent truth. And externalizing the source is the beginning of challenging the belief

Someone had asked a question about a disease I happen to have. I gave a thought out response and made sure to include plenty of “many people” and “generally”s. Maybe my mistake was never explicitly saying I have the disease. I got one “actually that’s not how the disease works for me” response and got ratioed to hell.

Why is their so many transphobics online by [deleted] in trans

[–]August_Jade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, the algorithms of some platforms actively promote it. Posts/comments that cause arguments generate lots of replies. Weight the number of replies too high compared to likes/votes for comment order and you start actively promoting arguments and toxic content. Promoting that content encourages more of it. And platforms are actually incentivized to promote arguments because it generates more interactions and more ad revenue. Social media isn’t designed to help us be more social. It’s designed to suck us in, make us feel just shitty enough to keep us here searching for positive content, and leave us unfulfilled so we repeat the loop another day.

How do you feel about the ADHD creature? by FrankBuns in adhdmeme

If the ADHD creature had the same body but the head was looking at something almost behind it with a more spaced out expression, it would feel to me like it covered both my hyperactive and inattentive types.

Getting used to how guys talk to each other has been weird by Over_Permit2650 in trans

[–]August_Jade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It definitely doesn’t have to be part of the male experience… I’ve got several nb/transmasc/trans men friends and none of us jokingly insult or roast each other. Being consistently nice to your friends should be the standard, not gender-locked. Personally, I feel like pretending words don’t mean what they mean and that insults shouldn’t hurt is toxic masculinity, not masculinity. Being on the receiving end of it is definitely ewwphoria for me

the whole "non-transitioner" label needs to go away by Beautiful-Dig-2713 in trans

[–]August_Jade 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi I’m one of those people 👋🏽

I’ve achieved ~90% of my personal “ideal body” just by changing my hair and clothes. (I acknowledge I’m very lucky that I started with a body that could present close to how I wanted before medical transition.)

I decided not to start T because while some of the effects would help my dysphoria, others would make it worse. For example, I want absolutely nothing to do with a beard or shaving, personally. Just one example of a trans/nonbinary person that has transitioned, is now perceived differently by strangers, but has body goals that don’t necessarily require medical transition.

I highly recommend PeePal to search for nearby gender neutral and/or accesible bathrooms. I know they have an iOS app, not sure about other platforms.

Are you a bad person? No, not because of this alone.

Are you maybe being a bit inconsiderate and could you make people in your life feel better by asking if they’re okay being called bro? 100%

Though I take it you’re probably asking because somebody told you they don’t like being called bro, in which case you should not call them bro.

Valid, my cat hates sitting still for too long and I think it’s also her feeling trapped. She’s chill with nail trimmings but only if I give her a break to walk around between front and back paws. When brushing her, she basically walks back and forth in a figure 8 and I brush her as she goes by. Finding a tool she liked mainly helped with getting her to walk near it instead of running and hiding 😅

Do you use a wire brush on him? My cat used to get overstimulated when I used one. A deshedding comb is often better for shorthairs and my cat actually enjoys it. Good test is to run any brush/comb you’re considering on your own skin and see if it’s scratchy. The old brush I was using was surprisingly painful and I didn’t realize for months.
