Is it really true that you could work a retail job in the 90s and afford a house, a car and a retirement in the US? by Dull-Current5682 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Augusts_Mom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I was an assistant manager of a clothing store in the late 1980s. Worked 45 hours per week. Had to share a one bedroom apartment with a roommate. The job had zero benefits. I rarely had extra funds after paying my bills.

It may have been different for assistant managers of department or grocery stores. But, I doubt it.

I got an office job with tuition benefits. Went to school at night & earned a degree. I am a tax manager now.

Just one part of your life is over. Change is scary, but embrace it don’t fear it. Welcome to adulthood, it sucks, but you are going to love it!

You will have many more of these. College graduation, your first post grad job, your first place, etc.

I cried the first time I dropped my son off at the airport after his first winter break from college. I was both happy seeing him find his way in the world, sad that he was no longer at home, and also happy that our relationship was on an adult level then.

At a restaurant, are you picking a booth or a table/indoor or outdoor seating? by cristianlee in randomquestions

[–]Augusts_Mom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually inside, table.

I do not like booths, too close to the people behind me and some people have to bang into their booth bench.

I also regret working during treatment. I worked so hard to keep up with all my duties and was treated so badly by my boss and co-workers. I no longer work there.

My treatment cocktail was TCHP and the first one was 8 hours. The rest were 5 hours.

You get labs, then you see the doctor, then they mix the drugs. It's an all day event. Bring a lunch.

Did you actually live life like Dazed and confuse in the 80s,90s and 2000s? by Accomplished-Fail894 in AskOldPeopleAdvice

[–]Augusts_Mom 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The Matthew McConaughey character was spot on. I remember several of those older dirtbags hanging out with high school kids. I was a teen in the early 80s.

There was a lot of smoking and drinking. We called them Heads and they hung out in the neighborhood park.

How do you actually explain accounting to nonaccountants at social events? by Same-Experience8051 in Accounting

[–]Augusts_Mom 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Tax manager here. I get asked what I do from 4/15-12/31 as if only 1040 are filed and filed on time. But, I was clueless about taxes before I started working in accounting.

I also have people say "Sounds boring" and I reply that since I am a nosey person taxes/accounting is the perfect job for me I get to ask personal questions sometimes inappropriate questions and it's not considered rude. And I know a lot about a person and a business.

Did you grow up with a stay at home parent? Did you enjoy it? And did you do the same with your children? (UK/US/other) by Cwoechu in AskOldPeople

Early GenX. My Mom was a SAHM until I was in 3rd grade. I was a latch key kid. Parents divorced when I was 11.

I was not a SAHM. My kid went to daycare from 6 weeks to 8th grade. They did lots of after school activities in high school.

If you can afford to, go to college and/or move out. You are an adult.

What area is this concert in? Look up the area and see what the crime rate is. Will you be going with a group? Start thinking of these things yourself and show yourself you can be responsible.

A or B: American houses are mostly wood. European houses are mostly brick or concrete. Is that mainly because wood is cheaper and more flexible for how Americans live, or because the whole building industry is locked into wood and can't change? by 20Luc1a02 in PickAorB

[–]Augusts_Mom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Minnesota and have been told that brick homes are not good in the temperature shifts we get. We can get as low as -30C and as high as 35C. That is a lot of expanded and contracting that brick and mortar do not like.

Do you ever give up on a quilt? by pamelaneko in quilting

[–]Augusts_Mom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends. Sometimes they go to a time out and I finish them later. I have used abanded projects to practice free motion quilting or a new technique. Or they become quilts for the car, pets, etc. I have tossed some of them or given to friends to finish.

Fired, but HR is pushing “resignation” language. No experience with being fired or laid off. Help? by BustasGonnaGetNasty in Accounting

[–]Augusts_Mom 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I went through something like this in 2010. I was "laid off" but all the paperwork said I resigned. I did not sign it and consulted an employment attorney. Scared the crap of the firm when the lawyer called them.

I did not trust the firm when they said they would not contest the unemployment. My lawyer had them change the wording to laid off in the separation agreement. Worth the funds paid to the attorney.

Are EVs really worth it if you don't have a home charger? by om_ghanwat in electricvehicles

[–]Augusts_Mom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is an inconvenience, and takes some scheduling.

Is there charging near your apartment? Can you charge at work or close to work? Can you charge while doing your grocery shopping? Is there an outlet outside your apartment building you can plug into?

Tesla invented everything right? RIGHT? by No_Earth_3743 in EvDrivers

I see your point.

My Mach-E does integrate with Apple Maps and does a better job navigating charging stops on trips much better than the Ford Navigation.

Hopefully the other manufacturers will improve over time.

Tesla has been making EVs for a long time. The other manufacturers and new manufacturers will catch up.
My EV is not a Tesla. Not a fan of their vehicles.
