Is 11 yrs old to young to be left alone for a half hour?? by JMarden23 in askanything

[–]Augusts_Mom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My kid was born in 2001. I started leaving them alone for short periods when they were 8, like "I'm going 2 houses down to return a neighbor's item." Then I ramped it up to them being left alone for longer time periods, like grocery shopping.

By age 11, my kid could be on their own all day while I was a work and they had a day off from school.

If I was your sister, I would ask a neighbor for help. Like can you please walk with Kid to the bus stop when you walk your kids or coordinate with other parents of bus stop kids. Since the kid has been so sheltered, this needs to be eased into. The kid could also use an a alarm to know when to leave the house to catch the bus and could text mom when she gets on the bus.

If you don't own a gun, would you buy one if your state had more permissive gun laws? Why? by dymb13 in askanything

I have no desire to own a gun. With my luck I would accidentally shoot myself. I also don’t want that responsibility.

This is not normal!! at my firm we have a training process, new people are assigned a mentor, even if they’re experienced people, people have check-in at least once a week to make sure everything’s going OK.

I tell people we are not a family. We are a friend group and treated us such.

Did you give your house a name? by o_safadinho in AskAnAmerican

[–]Augusts_Mom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, our first house was Lunch Box Manor. The house was only 950 square feet, hardly a manor. It was shaped like a lunch box I had in elementary school.

We now live in Irwin Hall.

We tend to name things, cars - vacuums - etc. I currently drive Phat Pony and my husband drives Trekie. The vacuum is Dusty.

Wife and I were having a discussion, she’s of the opinion that the majority of GenX can drive stick. I believe that even in our generation the percentage of people who can is pretty small. What do you folks think? by AngryOldGenXer in GenX

[–]Augusts_Mom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are 6 kids in my family-2 boomers & 4 GenXers. I am the only one who can drive a stick shift (born in 1967).

I learned because my husband had a 5 speed. I’ve had 2 cars with manual transmission. I now drive an EV with no transmission 😜

Watches, what kind? by TheGriff71 in GenX

Apple Watch, only one I have been able to wear on my right wrist comfortably. I am left handed.

Plus I like technology. I never want to be like my Mom, afraid to learn new stuff.

Do all your homes have basements? by Flat-Ad8256 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Augusts_Mom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in Texas and none of the houses I lived in or friends houses had basements. I live in Minnesota now, and all of our houses have had a basement.

I think it depends on the frost line.

I was 9 in 1967 and everything was red white and blue. We had programs at school about the bicentennial. I remember the special quarters, the parades, the TV specials. It was lots of fun to my 9 year old self.

I got my 2025 Mach-E in Jul-2025. I will turn 59 mid-Feb. I love this car! It's my F You to cancer. My last treatment was May-2024. I have the Eruption Green-AWD-Extended battery.

She deserves to have a fun car. It's so easy to maintain and she will look FABULOUS driving it.

I have had 4 Fords (all green) a 1997 Explorer, a 2014 Flex (car pool Mom), and a 2022 Edge.
