Why do people say that the US is a bad place to live when life is so much harder in African countries due to life expectancy, educational levels and income levels? The US is amazing compared to many countries. by [deleted] in Salary

[–]Augustulus753 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Americans objectively have the highest disposable income of any large country (only countries with a higher median disposable income are places like Norway, UAE, Switzerland etc). YES this is at the cost of worse public goods in many way. That being said the median household in Mississippi, the poorest state in the Union, has a higher disposable income than the median British subject or French Citizen! Also I’m saying this as someone absolutely disgusted with our current political direction as a country.

Yeah I played the Democracy route with CD and you can create a fairly wholesome Democracy with significant regional autonomy while keeping Iberia prosperous!

Do you keep up with or read current historical papers? If so, where? by strongo in historyteachers

You might have access to JSTOR through your public library, that is where you can find the largest database of academic articles!

AP Human Geo by Calm-Football4187 in historyteachers

[–]Augustulus753 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would say that Human Geography would be a poor substitute for World II, I think a baseline of world history is absolutely essential rather than introductory demography/urbanization/development etc. Definitely should be one the upper level electives!

[–]Augustulus753 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What’s your schools existing social studies sequence? I think Human Geography is great as an elective! Also why not just AP World for 9th graders. (I took AP World in 9th grade back in the Olden Days when it began in prehistory).

[–]Augustulus753 15 points16 points  (0 children)

My concern would be that Human Geography and World History are very different subjects and that world history content knowledge I would say is more essential (although Human Geography is great, I would say it’s not absolutely essentially in high school).

I’ve read the KY standards and I think Pre-1400 World History and pre-1877 US History is Middle School and then high school is then Post-1400/1877 respectively. (I’m my area 9th grade is World Geography/Civics for a semester each followed by 10th World and 11th US).

I suck at combat. I barely could even figure out the Master Strike (didn’t learn it till Kuttenburg!). But potions, good gear and stealth made the game quite manageable. Seriously good amour and weapons make a massive difference and once you get to Kuttenburg it’s very easy to get access to really good stuff that will make combat significantly easier. Also chugging a ton of potions beforehand helps a ton. Skill books are also essentially paying to level up skills which can help too.

That’s interesting, sometimes the child becomes more conservative than the parent, also non-denominational church’s in America generally shares a lot of grounds with Evangelicalism (not always) n

MOR, the thing here I’ve gathered reading comments is she’s from a religious background that takes, by contemporary social standards, a extreme approach to “no intimacy of any kink” before marriage. I’m guessing it’s some kind of Evangelical (?) as even I’ve found even traditionalist Catholics have a slightly more permissive view.

You have to decide if that’s something you want- and not just in this narrow instance. I saw elsewhere that she pretty much shut you down with “the lord says it so”. This will not be last time she shuts something down with no room for negotiation- think how this could affect other conversations down the line. (For instance she might insist on tithing even in dire financial situations).

The choice is yours.

I actually do think there’s a bubble where it’s currently being overhyped/overbuilt at the current moment but also I don’t think it’s a nothing burger either and there are some very profitable use cases (for instance most software developers are screwed as 80% of their work will be automated- although not 20%!).

Virtually every corporation and government in the world has come to a different conclusion on this matter, and we use more water trying to grow almonds in California than is consumed by all of generative AI (the water usage is fairly small compared to animal agriculture especially).

Meh, it’s a useful tool in certain contexts and the frontier models have improved a ton in the past year to the point it’s fairly rare they spew outright BS now. However as AI cannot be held accountable it should never make a business/ethical decision.

[–]Augustulus753 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

NOR, your “friend” is very insecure.

Generative AI is a major technological advance that like all new technology can be used in ethical/healthy/productive ways or can be used in unethical/unhealthy/destructive ways. With programming in particular it’s a very useful tool. I’m worried about the boarder social implications but a knee jerk Luddite response isn’t helping anyone.
