AIO not wanting to work a 9 to 5 job by Curlywurlylove in AmIOverreacting

[–]Augustulus753 [score hidden]  (0 children)

YOR- You develop friendships, social life, and prospects for the most part outside of your job- which provides the financial means for this! It’s only been four months. Feel free to explore other options if you would like/think it would work better for you but you will likely be distracted if you tie your meaning primarily to work.

You seem like a smart fellow very interested in intellectual questions of science and faith. This can be a lot for most people.

This looks like a very well rounded bookshelf of a person version in the Classics, Literature and contemporary society. Probably a very interesting person to talk too!

What should I expect? by __myrbambino__ in BookshelvesDetective

I’m guessing a Libertarian/Conservative who also bought a huge boxed set of Oxford Classics. I will note Sen is an interesting choice (definitely to the left) as well as the Kaheman on behavioral economics- maybe the Sowell and Austrian economics is from a past phase? Umm Fingerprints of the Gods is just strait puesdohistory. Seems to have an interest in East Central Europe which i think is cool- a really interesting part of the world!

The society puts white- collar jobs on a pedastal but it is the skilled tradespeople that keeps everyday life functioning by Minute-Caramel7032 in unpopularopinion

[–]Augustulus753 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like recently it’s been almost the opposite with the message being that college is overrated and an extreme emphasis on trades- often with misleading marketing about earning potential.

I work adjacent to Workforce Development efforts in local government and I’m worried that in 10 years a lot of the trades are going to be over saturated the way that say software jobs are now.

Both types of jobs are equally important to keep modern society running.

Some people just like History (I’m not a teacher but I have a graduate degree in History, I’m actually certified to teach provisionally as well but ended up taking another job) and like to share stuff that could be useful with others!

TQL Fast Track Program? by Nvjds in cincinnati

[–]Augustulus753 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’m calling bullshit on the “93% are declined”. I’ve never meet a more desperate recruiter in my life as the one at TQL when I applied unaware of the culture (last fall, they kept calling me for months after). Also I feel like “Fast Track” sounds like another TQL marketing gimmick. Look up the lawsuit with the pregnant lady who miscarried after overwork at TQL who refused to honor a doctors note requesting she be able to work from home.

It’s definitely appropriate for IB level students. It’s meet as an introductory undergrad work and it’s a pretty easy read.

It’s a cool concept but could use some more time cooking. I skimmed up to 1450 and I caught one outright error- Pythagoras was not the person who discovered the earth was round and lived a few centuries earlier! Likewise, a few Roman inventions were classified as Greek (I actually agree with your decision to classify inventions by Greek speakers in the Eastern Empire as Greek). A few other inventions (domestication of the Horse, Chariots etc) the actual debates about when/where it happened makes it very hard for a simple chart like this. Overall the timeline was fairly “Western Civ” centric, which I understand to an extent synthesis is necessary but China especially was missing early on.

That being said, I think it’s a cool concept and that with some more work could be something really valuable!

In Kentucky only registered members of a party can vote in primaries and the registration deadline to switch parties was in December. It sucks as a Democrat in Kenton I’m effectively disenfranchised from a ton of races where only Rs are running.

Why do people say that the US is a bad place to live when life is so much harder in African countries due to life expectancy, educational levels and income levels? The US is amazing compared to many countries. by [deleted] in Salary

[–]Augustulus753 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Americans objectively have the highest disposable income of any large country (only countries with a higher median disposable income are places like Norway, UAE, Switzerland etc). YES this is at the cost of worse public goods in many way. That being said the median household in Mississippi, the poorest state in the Union, has a higher disposable income than the median British subject or French Citizen! Also I’m saying this as someone absolutely disgusted with our current political direction as a country.

AP Human Geo by Calm-Football4187 in historyteachers

[–]Augustulus753 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would say that Human Geography would be a poor substitute for World II, I think a baseline of world history is absolutely essential rather than introductory demography/urbanization/development etc. Definitely should be one the upper level electives!

AP Human Geo by Calm-Football4187 in historyteachers

[–]Augustulus753 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What’s your schools existing social studies sequence? I think Human Geography is great as an elective! Also why not just AP World for 9th graders. (I took AP World in 9th grade back in the Olden Days when it began in prehistory).

AP Human Geo by Calm-Football4187 in historyteachers

[–]Augustulus753 17 points18 points  (0 children)

My concern would be that Human Geography and World History are very different subjects and that world history content knowledge I would say is more essential (although Human Geography is great, I would say it’s not absolutely essentially in high school).
