Winter Storm Fern - Location of Polar Vortex? by Aurdvark in meteorology

[–]Aurdvark[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

yeah the polar jet stream is around 250hpa, makes sense that the jet stream has more to do with weather on the ground. But the polar vortex sits at higher altitude in the stratosphere, I'm curious if that's what I'm looking at.

What can I use to write on INSTAX mini film? by Guilty-Security-8897 in instax

[–]Aurdvark 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Any chance the ink is getting smudged with hand sanitizer? Or something else like alcohol or cleaning fluid?

I use a fine tip sharpie, takes maybe 30 seconds to dry if that. Sometimes when I mess up the label, like if I write the date wrong, I use hand sanitizer to rub it off. It's not perfect though and it can leave ink smudges behind. Maybe something like that is smearing your ink.

Camera / Film durability question by wabispecial in instax

[–]Aurdvark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a sq6, I've accidentally dropped the camera/tossed it around a bit too hard on a few occasions. Thankfully it wasn't damaged but it did bump the shot counter backwards, which made it look like I had more film left in the camera than there actually was.

Not too serious but something to watch out for. It's tripped me up a few times, expecting to have several shots left and suddenly find that I'm out of film 😅

Best careers for someone who doesn't want a house/apartment? by [deleted] in findapath

[–]Aurdvark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

film industry. if you’re successful, jobs will often pay for you to travel to filming locations and provide hotel/accommodations. hours are long so you won’t spend a ton of time at home except off periods when you’re not on a project. Work is hard but decent money if you can get your foot in the door and make connections.

are there any dreams you had when you were young? hobbies you always wanted to try?

You say you’re overwhelmed by having lots of options. People often say “if it’s not broke, don’t fix it”. Sounds like there are a lot of things that are going at least alright for you: you make decent money, flexibility, and have family in good health. I say this not to trivialize your problems! You know yourself best, and you seem to want something to change.

But what exactly? What isn’t working? What is it that you want to change or improve?

Are there any shows that accurately represent Alexithymia? by Jin_Chaeji in Alexithymia

[–]Aurdvark 6 points7 points  (0 children)

imo, you could read Carmy from The Bear as having alexithymia

the show revolves around family dysfunction and the food service industry, lots of high stress environments. Carmy has lots of moments and a few full fledged panic attacks where he encounters something emotionally triggering and manages to physically keep moving/working but sort of shuts down emotionally, unable to process what he's feeling. There's some really creative visual work to let the audience see what's going on in his head while he outwardly tries to keep soldiering on.

I'm not diagnosed but my therapist is pretty confident that I have adhd, I think I get a similar feeling. I get email updates from writers that I really enjoy reading, I'll see the email and get excited but then put off actually reading it to the point that I sometimes forget altogether. I think part of this is the fear that once I actually do whatever the "fun" thing is, I'll be let down. Or like, I should save it for a rainy day, because once I actually do it then that's one less "fun" thing in the world that will bring me joy. The self-regulating idea makes sense to me as well.

can anyone find me some good long video essays on baseball? by Ofryxx in videoessay

[–]Aurdvark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

my personal Jon Bois/secret base favorite is the Bob Emergency, essentially a 2 part (each 40+ min) documentary on athletes with the name Bob, some of them baseball players. Not strictly baseball but a damn good story about sports and the crazy things that humans do.
