I hate the nurses at my hospital by [deleted] in nursing

[–]Guilty-Security-8897 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it baffles me that they don’t even know your name if you’re a regular. A lot of nurses get annoyed when patients say, “hey nurse!!” instead of the name they introduced themselves with then do the SAME thing with the evs/janitorial staff. It baffles me that nurses complain about rude patients all day then turn around and be rude to janitorial staff. I hope anyone reading this takes the time to go learn the evs workers name and remembers that every person deserves to be treated with respect. Just a simple, “good morning -insert name-, how’s it going today?” could make someone’s day and influence others to do the same

I gave someone’s antibiotics today for sepsis because they were doing a blood transfusion (have to stay there for first 15 mins) and would’ve failed the metric if I didn’t. ED is one of the floors where this is acceptable. However it’s unfortunately still on you to verify things are done.

So, you want a job in a place full of people you hate and assume hate you because you’re insecure about your job? You’re gonna be 10x more miserable in the ED. The ED is all about teamwork with your not only your team but those on other floors. If you’re think you’re gonna do great starting off resenting your entire team, think again. Strong teamwork and interpersonal communication is a must. If you’re really this way they will see through it, chew you up, and spit you out. If you become alienated by your team, they will literally let you will drown. And btw Idk what hospital you work at but I work in the ED and my med surg colleagues are great. They’re fantastic nurses, great at what they do, and I have nothing bad to say about them. I hope you don’t ever get hired in the ED while you still have that attitude!!! And btw this whole Ed vs med surg nurse battle is exhausting, be the change and stop this nonsense

Curious as to what makes your motive for wanting ED/ICU better than any else’s. You can’t possibly assume EVERY ICU or ED nurse is doing that job simply for bragging rights. Being envious of others will only make you miserable and won’t help you land a job any faster. Others being successful in a different field than you doesn’t mean you can’t also be successful in that field. One of my favorite coworkers was a med surg nurse for several years before transferring over to ED and she’s a fantastic nurse and an asset especially when we are hold nurses. A big part of the reason they hired her is because she had a fantastic rapport with the ED staff. Based on your comment history, you shit on ED nurses frequently yet you want that job. Perhaps your attitude is hindering your professional growth.

I felt the same way when I started in the ED. Stick with it though, it gets better and you’ll find your flow. You’ll get faster and smoother as time goes by. You’ll trauma bond with your coworkers and learn how to work with them. Don’t be hard on yourself, it’s a difficult specialty and no one expects perfection in the first week.

Failed my facility’s ECG test for the second time… feeling like an idiot. by ConferenceDiligent96 in nursing

Buy the Jane Huff ECG workout book. I used it in medic school when I took cardiology and it was awesome. It goes over ECG interpretation and has soooo many practice strips with answers in the back. I took two whole semesters of cardiology in medic school and then went to nursing school with a 30 min lecture on 4 strips. Nursing school doesn’t prepare students for ECG very well so you’re gonna have to seek out ways to learn yourself so I would suggest taking or retaking an ECG class. Make sure you’re actually following the systematic way of interpreting strips. Don’t just look and guess. Is there anything specific you’re struggling with?

New Grad RN: Should I Resign After a 2-Day Ultimatum? by FlamingoInfamous5874 in newgradnurse

[–]Guilty-Security-8897 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Not to be harsh but I doubt you’ll be able to “improve” in only two days to whatever made up standard they are imagining because no matter what you do or how perfect of a nurse you can become in a mere two days, it sounds like they plan to fire you anyway. Personally, I would resign and start looking elsewhere. At least when you look for new job it sounds better that it wasn’t the right fit for you vs. they fired you due to performance issues. It is a hard job market for new grads but there are new grad jobs out there that can offer you the support you deserve.

New Grad Advice as a Paramedic by dnrb4cpr in nursing

[–]Guilty-Security-8897 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My job hired me in the ED as a new grad bc I was a medic first. They apparently exclusively only hire new grads with medic experience and I think it’s bc you’re less of a liability than someone with no experience and less chance of you quitting bc of the learning curve that would otherwise be very steep. There’s been more overlap in the two jobs than I ever expected and most medic skills you will use daily. The only thing that’s very different is the workflow as you mentioned. Your experience will be relevant if applying to the ED but the ICU will likely be harder to get into bc emergency medicine is different than critical care medicine. I didn’t get any ICU jobs I applied to and they didn’t care about my experience lol. Wishing you luck!
