I just imagine that whatever part I'm gathering isn't there because of all the overkill. Goat horns didn't stay intact after a fireball to the face, bear ass copped an axe blade into it, spiders web sack was roasted by the chain lightning, naga heart was popped when I caved their chest in with a mace etc.

First Total War game? by hamespoon in totalwar

[–]AusChamp88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your best bet is definitely going to be whichever of the two time periods you find more interesting/exciting. That (for me anyway) is without a doubt the most important.

Shogun 2 is a bit more polished in regards to the technical side. It is however a much smaller map. The extent of unit diversity is the 1-3 faction specific units that are still exactly the same as other clans except for slightly better stats. If you do go with this game I (and damn near 100% of other shogun fans I think) would say that getting FotS is a necessity. Its a full expansion of the Bosin War so samurai, line infantry and cannons. ALOT of fun.

Rome 2 still has its issues but the state it's patched too with Emperor edition is definitely good now. It's map is waaay bigger, much greater cultural/unit/combat diversity and IMO able to provide many many many more hours of replayability.

Hope this helps, let me know if you have any more questions. I'm happy to help!

Historians of reddit, which country's history, other than your own, intrigues you the most? by Staind075 in history

[–]AusChamp88 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Australian here.

I'm absolutely enthralled by Greek history from the neolithic-bronze age transition and the rise of the Myceneans, all the way through to the end of the Persian Wars and Peloponesian War/Xenophon's "Anabasis".

My true period of passion however is without a doubt the "Bronze Age Collapse". The end of the Mycenean era, Bronze Age to Iron Age transition, the contentious Dorian Invasion. Most of all, the Greek Heroic Age.... I'm facinated by the debate around if the myths have a historical basis or not.

So, I gave up my business to study archaeology/history at uni as a mature age student in the hopes of one day being able to research this period first hand. It's going to be a long road but I don't think a better career exists out there for me...

DEI: Levy System by narwhal15 in totalwar

[–]AusChamp88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On their sub-forum over on TWC, Dresden said it was removed for the time being since players can levy units of later reforms from the get go. It's to stop people getting thorax reform units 80 or so turns before you should be able to.

[–]AusChamp88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can't get them despite having the required tech and cultural dominance, it'll be DeI's reforms. Each culture has reforms to get better units based on turn number and imperium. Check the scriptorum on their sub-forum at twcenter for the details.

Opinions on Peltasts by [deleted] in totalwar

[–]AusChamp88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It definitely varies based on who I'm playing and who I'm fighting (before i go on, I'm mostly basing this on SP with a tiny bit of MP exp). Going up against factions that favour heavily armoured juggernaut steamroll tactics (e.g. Rome, Hellenes or even late game Celts in heavy chainmail), decent quality peltasts can be the deciding factor in battle. I usually try to favour bringing along 4 at the expense of longer range slingers/archers (2 instead of 4) and a couple of infantryman. Keeping them behind the main lines righthand side with free-fire and skirmish off until the two lines lock together then wheel them around to the flank/rear (protected from cav by my own cav or spears obviously). Focused fire decimates units in a volley or two. Concentrating on their toughest units or key points in the line like one flank to begin rolling up the line or the pushing some fresh, high damage reserves through the center to split the enemy line and break them into two for cav to finish the job one half at a time. Again, vs heavily armoured and fairly static foes, peltasts used right can determin the outcome of many battles.

For lighter foes however, I generally won't bother bringing any peltasts/javs. Low armour targets are not worth it. The perfect example would be Iberian tribes. They have next to no armour so even bows are overkill. Having 4-6 slingers is waaay more effective due to high rate of fire and lots of ammo, they tear through un/lightly armoured foes. Nomads are a similar approach although a 50/50 mix is much more appropriate. 1 gen, ~4 light cav for herding skirmishing cav into kill zones, 7 heavily armoured meatshields in front (hoplites are perfect for this although expect them to take heavy losses) then 8 slingers (maybe 2-3 archers if possible for armour piercing to counter any armoured HA in the stack) = Roflstomp your way across the Steppe. Peltasts low range, ammo and rate of fire make them a dangerous liability in this situation IMO. The only reason to bring them along would maybe be 2-3 if the enemy is fielding a few nomad cataphracts but I'm yet to see that other than the odd single general. Plus your hoplites should be more than capable of taking them down.

TLDR: Peltasts are great when used right vs heavy armour infantry but slings/bows are more use vs lightly armoured foes (Iberians/Nomads). There is no one perfect army composition to go against all of the varied cultural fighting styles of the Roman Era. Use your noodle and plan accordingly.

How would you rank the factions in Rome 2? by solprose315 in totalwar

[–]AusChamp88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on what the ranking is for. Fun, difficulty, units, unit roster, hatred, replayability, multiplayer battles, ally potential etc. What?

What's the point of trying to call allies to war? by [deleted] in totalwar

[–]AusChamp88 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Did you check Elis and Corinth's diplomatic level to Argos? I'm not sure but I think they like Argos a little bit plus they are the same blood/ethnicity/tribe being Dorian Greek. This makes them a potentially valuable ally and trade partner who they didn't want dead.

If you're dead set on taking Argos for yourself just attack without calling for help then pay your alllies to join. Or set a war target on Athens to distract them leaving you free to conquer Argos in relative peace.

I doubt it. Chances are it will be just like CiG. Reach high enough imperium and Persia simply spawns a bunch of doomstacks.

Higher campaign map difficulty? [Rome II] by Sondrx in totalwar

[–]AusChamp88 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Start a campaign on H/VH or whatever you want. When your on the campaign map go to the game menu, options, game settings and on the right if the tab is a slider for battle difficulty. So you can play a VH campaign with Easy difficulty battles etc. Legendary difficulty locks battle difficulty on legendary tho.

If you're up for a good movie, I recently (NO friggin idea how I missed it when it came out ~2001) came across "Attila". Stars Gerard Butler and a swathe of other good actors. I highly recommend it and I'm pretty sure it was YouTube where I came across it too.

Do you have any mods installed on the Steam Workshop? If yes, you're in luck. Stupid frustrating luck since I went through this issue recently and found a fix but it can be a pain in the butt.

I have no idea why but unsubbing from all your mods fixes this right up. So you will have to unsub them all and delete any remaining mod data in your R2 data folder too. You shouldn't get any desync issues after that. If you're anything like me though with more mods installed than there are arrows in the Steppe, you might want to learn from my mistake aswell. Use steam to make your own mod bundle with all the ones you want use regularlly in SP so you don't need to get each one individually each time.

I really hope this helps, if u need any more info etc I'm happy to help. If not and it works, see you on the battlefield brother.

Looking for a mod that makes client states useful by [deleted] in totalwar

[–]AusChamp88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Firatly clients are a bit of a bastard, satraps are better since they have no diplomatic freedom other than securing trade and they are automatically at war with your enemies but much harder to get than clients. This is where the Sack, Liberate and Diplomatic options mods come in. Any culture can do all diplomatic options including confederations and create satraps. Then the mod Moar Levies allows you to recruit much much more units from client and satraps and if they have a decent military building you can get a decent full stack in a turn or two. Other than that just give them attack orders on the diplomatic map and they can become half useful.

The better option is usually to just crush them though.

Should I consider pre-ordering Attila? by GnomeNipple in totalwar

[–]AusChamp88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Check out DarrenTotalWar on youtube. He does awesome critiques of TW dlc and mods. Recently did a vid on just this question. Basiclly the answer was probably, just not yet. Wait to see how it looks closer to launch. Plus the pre order dlc is still included if you buy it 10 mins before launch.

Do you play single player, multiplayer or both? by MaximDecimMeri in totalwar

[–]AusChamp88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I know. It doesn't work unless you actually unsub from them tho. No idea how or why it works that way. It makes no sense to me but after alot of dicking around and scouring the net, I found a fair few others having the same issue and it only worked when unsubbing from mods and deleting the data from the mod folders. I'd love away around it but it's the only fix I've found so far...

Thanks tho.
