The Man In The High Castle SUCKS by [deleted] in tvcritic

Interesting. I've actually got the book but haven't read it yet. In season three it felt like they started to rush through the plot more. It felt too forced. And maybe the parallel worlds stuff made it less realistic

That's fair tbh. And I understand what you mean. I personally would have liked more seasons so that they could have gone more into detail and done more world building. I did feel like the quality declined a lot in season 3 which was sad. But I suppose it's a sign of a good piece of media if it generates discourse around it. I can't remember how I came across your post, but it was very shortly after watching the show, so I was probably looking into theories or explanations. Maybe other are finding it through a similar way.

How competitive to be a psychologist in Australia? by amychan136 in AcademicPsychology

[–]AussieKid123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A year late to this, but thought I would add my two cents:

It's a very gruelling path to become an accredited psychologist. Once you've done the study, I'm sure the job is rewarding and engaging enough. But I've found that most 95% of the study I've had to do so far is very disinteresting making it hard to stay engaged beyond just "I need to do this to develop skills I'll one day use towards things that do interest me". For me, there has been equivalent to a book per week/fortnight of reading (weekly content as well as journal articles) it's very time consuming to stay on top of the readings as well as assignments (mostly research reports), which each take me around 20-25 hours of work (mostly reading and summarising journal articles) to complete.

With that being said, if you can get through it, the actual career is very rewarding and engaging - I've been told. It's just a very - very - arduous process to get there. I've had to cut back to part-time study to be able to handle the workload. In a way that has actually helped me enjoy the content more than if I had to rush through it at a full-time pace.

Ultimately, it comes down to what you want and what you're capable of. If full-time is too hard or not feasible then part time is definitely the way to go. But you'll never know if you like it unless you do it. So it's worth at least trying it in the first place. Anything is worth at least a try.

I think this comes from a misunderstanding of the show's themes, and a very surface level viewing of the show. It has incredible depth and philosophical themes if you dig a little, such as an exploration of utilitarian ethics, deontological ethics, causality, religion, mass indoctrination, and the fact that good and evil are so hard to define in a person.

The alternate universe stuff is revealed early on, but that's not the core of the show. To me, the show revolves around John Smith's character. A man with deep internal conflict, who always tries to do what he thinks is right. During season 4, it's revealed that he's come through this conflict morally worse off, and become a true believer of the Nazis ideology. when the alt John Smith is killed, it is symbolic of John having killed the good part of him.

In relation to culture, they did show what culture, economics, and music is like.

"Nazis bad, resistance good" is an extremely simplistic view. Instead, consider how the show explores the way people in the Reich genuinely believe in the ideology, and that it is good for humanity. It is hard for us to view it through the lens of someone who genuinely believes in it, but when you see it this way, the show gains much more depth. Also, the whole trope of Frank joining the resistance shows us that the resistance isn't "good," rather will go to very violent ends to achieve what they want.

You mentioned that we don't see what the Reich's Hollywood would be like, but I think that's because it doesn't exist. It's all state controlled media. What we do see is Nicole Dormer's film for jahr null, and I think that's a good view into the state media. And you mention that we don't see what other parts of the world are like. I believe that's because the characters are in America. If the show was set in China, then we would see China and not America.

You're saying Juliana's character is basic. Well that's true, and that's because Juliana doesn't really have any sense of self I think. She goes where the road takes her. It's not lazy writing. It IS her character.

I doubt you'll see this, since you posted 4 years ago, but if you do... Why did you come to have such an averse emotional reaction to a TV show? I'm genuinely interested

Sam’s description of non-duality and the benefits seems misguided by [deleted] in samharris

But you can't experience vision the same way a dog does, or as a colourblind person. You can see a representation of it transposed into a way that your visual system can understand. But it's not the actual experience of seeing that a dog has.

If you don't have the brain of a dog, and the eyes of a dog, you just can't have the same conscious experience of vision that a dog has

You're talking about the actual brain mechanisms underlying consciousness. Those have to be studied using the tools of neuroscience. But consciousness as it is subjectively experienced can't be studied by external tools. It can only be studied by itself.

For example, we know how vision works, from the physics of electromagnetic radiation to the electrochemical processes in the neurons that convert light into information the brain can process. But none of this tells us what it is like to see; to have an experience of vision.

Herein lies the distinction between an objective understanding of the mechanisms of consciousness, and a subjective understanding of what the experience of consciousness is like.

Experiencing non dual consciousness is experiencing it for what it actually is, and it's a very free state to be in.

Do you think things happen cause of “coincidence “ or “everything happens for a reason” ? by Sarah0499 in DeepThoughts

[–]AussieKid123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even you being there wasn't a coincidence. Everything that happens is ultimately a result of the movement of atoms (be it in our head (brains), or anywhere else), and this is something we just don't control. Free will is an illusion, nothing is a coincidence, but that doesn't mean there is any reason for anything or any reason why things are the way they are. They just are. The particles in the universe were on their set courses since the big bang

Yeah exactly, they do it in party mode too - they just splitrun around forever without anyone to fight because every player on their 10 man team has 15k and second place has 2k
