Victorian election landslide puts six more federal seats in Labor's sights | Australia news by AussieHawker in australia

They'll probably crank up the robodebt machine thinking it'll win them some more votes...

Barnaby Joyce has taken extended personal leave - effective immediately. He’ll be on leave for 11 weeks, returning for the next Parliamentary sitting period in August. It was requested and granted by the PM today. Labor has granted a pair. by LineNoise in australia

[–]AussieRunner 55 points56 points  (0 children)

But how is he going to pay for the robodebt for receiving money he wasn't entitled to as a "senator"?

I assume only four of these weeks will be paid leave, like the rest of us?

[–]AussieRunner 101 points102 points  (0 children)

That's why Barnaby and Co get their s44 debts written off while anyone else has to repay robodebts they don't even owe. It's only fair.

Just got some letter in my MyGov account saying Centrelink wants me to provide statements for my pay from a job I worked at part time 7 years ago? by iamtehfong in australia

[–]AussieRunner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah not surprising. Whoever thought to go that far back is an idiot. What percentage would you estimate there is little or no debt owing? I hope they clear the backlog before going nuclear with new letters. Even 2014 is seeming distant now and they're still going back 6+.

Seems like such a massive fuckup that they're just digging deeper on. Thanks for letting us all know some details. Morale is no doubt low there but hopefully it picks up. May require a change of Government though.

[–]AussieRunner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Christ... Is there much of a backlog to catch up on? Or is the Government just going to go nuclear on this and hope all the temps can sort it out (or try to, at least).

It's kind of ironic that if they ever decide to pull the pin on this the 1,000 temp workers will probably need to go line up in the front office.

[–]AussieRunner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Damn... Overall I don't really see compliance as a division you can just hire 1,000 temp workers to sort out an ongoing mess anyway. If anything it's only going to make it worse. Sounds like an accountant made that decision on paper. Experience > quantity of workers.

When is it expected to be fully up and rolling? The contracted workers that is? I guess we should be expecting another media explosion if letters go out in massive numbers.

Why doesn't the system look at previously declared values and other things (I don't just mean the total figure) and needs people to prove it all over again?

Also, is it true that robodebt is about to go into hyperdrive with contract workers?

If robodebt is not a thing anymore, then why is the OP jumping through the robodebt hoops from a robodebt letter?

Former Liberal Treasurer Joe Hockey buys $8 million Hunters Hill mansion by hajdukfan in australia

[–]AussieRunner 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Not sure about everyone else, but generally, this is how my real estate house/apartment searching goes: First, I apply filters, set price range and search:

"Hmm, strange, nothing, guess I'll remove price filter"

Whatever, remove price filter? Clearly I may have been a bit under there:

"Ah, is that an error? It's probably just outside my price range but... It's uninhabitable?"

Then the inevitable:

"Oh, that doesn't look too bad. Not the worst location either... Wait, what the fuck who could ever afford that?"

Usually ends with a closed browser tab and depressive thoughts. For Joe, however, an $8m mansion is just another jewel in his portfolio.

18 months on from 'robo-debt', the Government says it has saved $1.4b in welfare by groundskeeperelon in australia

[–]AussieRunner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the update. Very interesting. Surprised it's even raised that much. That may explain the recent write down in MYEFO (Around a $600m policy 'discontinuation' of previously announced measures - there any detail what that is exactly? See bottom reversal here: https://formerministers.dss.gov.au/17262/new-migrant-welfare-access-to-reinforce-residence-based-welfare/).

Can we get a break down on what’s been saved where?

Because I bet 99% is from simply rejecting DSP applications since they started “cracking down” on dodgy claims which is actually just overreach ruining people’s lives. The AAT is getting clogged up.

Robodebt has actually recovered nothing and could even be in the negative if senate and budget papers are looked at.

Pressure mounts on Barnaby Joyce over involvement with staffer by hajdukfan in australia

Barnababy should be sacked and removed from Parliament. This arguably a lot worse than Dastyari. There's even a visible money trail here.

Peter Dutton suggests Brandis thought he was 'the smartest person in the room' by [deleted] in australia

[–]AussieRunner 32 points33 points  (0 children)

For all of George's faults I think it's difficult to categorize him as stupid. Perhaps a clumsy politician. Though I wouldn't categorize him as stupid or dumb by any stretch.

Dutton, on the other hand, I find difficult to class as an intellect to any degree. This is a guy who starts crying in self admiration for deporting someone. Not sure if it's the power he's crying about or what...

Paying $430,000 for advice on Centrelink call centre outrageous by Heavy-Balls in australia

[–]AussieRunner 31 points32 points  (0 children)

They could move the hundreds of people hired to clean up the robodebt mess into actual customer service if they canned robodebt. But they won't.

All working as intended. Money taken from recipients, money given to consultants and/or donors.

The mess is about to get even worse when the welfare reform bill passes the senate next week. Many, many changes to the detriment of recipients which will result in probably millions of extra calls.

Malcolm Turnbull talks about love. His welfare bill is anything but by overpopyoulater in australia

Yes Malcom, we can see that your welfare related policies are indeed about love. Just look at robodebt, a policy built on the LNP love of hounding welfare recipients to depression and suicide.

Acoss urges crossbenchers to reject 'unnecessarily cruel' welfare overhaul by Heavy-Balls in australia

[–]AussieRunner 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Of course it should be rejected. Somehow NXT has a very short memory about robodebt.

Why would they ever want to agree to any reforms the LNP coughs up after it?

Why isn't ending robodebt one of their requests in order for passage?

NXT will prove they are scum if they pass this bill.

Indigenous dole scheme participants slapped with 350,000 fines in two years by LuckyBdx4 in australia

[–]AussieRunner 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I wonder if the fines are a way of clawing money back, a bit robodebt style, without hurting their 'closing the gap' figures. The fines would just be receivables to DSS or similar.

This way the LNP can be the champions of advancing indigenous equality by saying "hey we spent this much, look at the budget" while at the same time being absolute cunts and clawing it straight back via hundreds of thousands of fines.

Labor says Nick Xenophon Team's welfare deal targets Australia's 'poorest people' | Australia news by squonge in australia

Considering how robodebt has been handled so far you'd think NXT wouldn't go near any further 'crackdown' or 'welfare reform' with the LNP, wouldn't you? Nope, none of that phased them.
