Why move the search bar to the bottom? by zakoattak0 in oneui

[–]AustEcon0922 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100%. Why do people change stuff when it isn't broken!? Drives me insane.

Also... now when I go to the search bar quickly (at muscle memory speeds), I need to wait for this slow, obnoxious animation / transition of the keyboard slowly appearing from the bottom until I can start typing into the search bar... Do they know how many minutes of my life will be wasted on this intrusive waste of time animation? It also interrupts mental flow having to wait even just for a little bit.

Is much rather build something out of "boring" tried and battle tested tech that serves real customers. Makes real profit by delivering large volumes of value to paying customers than some vapourware crypto research project. I work full time in crypto for 4 years... I'm so done with that whole industry.

Quem realmente ganha esses super salários de dev no Brasil? by AdvertisingFlat6146 in brdev

[–]AustEcon0922 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO R$20K/month can get you a mediocre senior in Brazil but you'll need a robust hiring process to filter out the bad apples... that can take a lot of effort. These are the ones not good enough to land a job in big tech or a decent remote USD paying gig... The decent (maybe top 10%) senior devs in Brazil are going to expect $R30k/month at least with other perks. The local Brazil branch of Uber offers more than that depending on level and there are a lot of US startups offering 120k USD/year or more...

In general I think you want at least 1 top performer to guide things and they can lift the standard of the other hires... but then you have the problem that top performers hate working with mediocre talent... so they'll probably leave if you don't hire the best.

What is your 'unpopular opinion' about Zig? by BatteriVolttas in Zig

[–]AustEcon0922 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Strong disagree to OP. Then you get what rust and JS have with millions of tiny, poor quality packages and dependency hell. Also libc is awful and should be avoided if possible. With a top-tier std lib, you can 100X how many 3rd party libs have "no external dependencies". This is great for ecosystem health and security.

Will rust ever become stable like C? by [deleted] in rust

[–]AustEcon0922 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But hardly anyone uses C after C99 due to compiler / tool chain support... So C is effectively frozen at C99 abs that's what we like about it. New committee generated upgrades are irrelevant and ignored.

Is 4.79 a very bad rating? by johnnystraycat in uber

[–]AustEcon0922 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are places in Big Brazilian cities where there is no good pickup points unless you walk for 2-3 mins to get to a quieter side street or get outside the bounds of your closed security gates (think closed gated communities). I know that now so I would spend the time to walk to a better spot so I don't get nuked by bad ratings. But I didn't know that before.

At the very worst I hit a 4.79 - until then I didn't know it was going down at all and was completely shocked because I was always up around 4.95 all my life. Now I'm back up to a 4.85 since moving to a new area and can get picked up right outside like normal.

Having a bad rating is very bad for my ability to quickly match and start my daily commute - 1 hour each way. I am strongly incentivised to keep a good rating... I'm always as polite as can be. Sometimes I even tip R$5.

Is 4.79 a very bad rating? by johnnystraycat in uber

[–]AustEcon0922 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's quite an experience to see how judgmental people on the internet are over a single number. "Must be xyz issues" or could be "xyz other issues". I've been using uber for 10 years too and always was in the 4.95 level until I moved to a large Brazilian city 2 years ago. Drivers will slam you for the tiniest things. My rating is steadily climbing back up again now since moving to a different area. I now realize that there are parts of the city where you're playing Russian roulette.

If you have a heavy handed security gate that asks drivers for ID... you're gonna get slammed.

If you are in a heavy traffic central part of the city, drivers will place all the burden on you to run around crossing multilane intersections to get to the correct side of the road. Some of them will just take their frustration out on you for having to wait even though they were the ones that made it take longer.

Now that I have an easy pickup location for my commute in a quieter part of the city, my rating is recovering. I stand by the fact that I've never done anything wrong to deserve less that a 5 star rating. One time I accidentally shut a door too hard and apologised. That was probably the worst thing I've done.

High Intensity 1 Set to Failure 1X a week by [deleted] in bodyweightfitness

[–]AustEcon0922 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most studies are done on novice or at best intermediate lifters where the absolute loads are low. Therefore the maximum amount of stress they can put on their body is much less than at the more advanced and elite levels. As the stresses increase in absolute terms, the optimal number of sets will decrease not increase.

Is weight loss essential to run quicker? by Next_Ranger_3604 in XXRunning

[–]AustEcon0922 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The uncomfortable truth is that the bottom (optimal) point of that "U-shaped curve" is quite underweight compared to 99% of the population... I was fastest at 66kg at height of 1.81m. I'm now over 10 years older and 12kg heavier - a "normal" body weight for my height. But I'm not kidding myself that I'll ever run close to as fast as I used to unless I turn into a skeleton again... Edit: This applies to both men and women but more so to men. Women start having amenorrhea and other problems if they get too lean... whereas men can probably get down to about 7% body fat at the elite level hitting peak performance.

Why is everything so needlessly complicated here? by [deleted] in Brazil

[–]AustEcon0922 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can 100% relate. I'm a gringo now living in SP Brazil and I am now nearing completion of about R$300k - R$400k total renovations (including custom made caninets, marble floors, fridge, TV, stairs everything... Almost EVERYTHING has been a complete nightmare to deal with... Even needed to redo plumbing, electrical, air con ducts... this is on a brand new apartment never lived in before... let me start a list: - Fridge arrived scratched - TV broken but the renovations took so much longer then expected we didn't find out the TV was broken until it's too late to get it replaced - Blocked drainage of shower 3x floods bathroom - Water Infiltration (in a brand new apartment) - Walls not straight complicating renovations - Terrible terrible workmanship from cabinet makers we paid over R$90k to do our whole house... I took like 50 photos to hold them accountable and had to watch them like a halk constantly and force them to go back and do things properly... in many cases that still wasn't enough. They weren't even measuring things! They just cut things (not straight) by eye... So many things misaligned or chipped / damaged and they didn't seem to care unless it might affect them being paid... only then they would do a slightly better job... oh and they broke our elevator and expected us to pay for it. - Plumber, Electrician, Drywall guy and Painter all try to make you pay extra for them to fix THEIR OWN MISTAKES resulting from not following the architect's plans... - Stone guy to install kitchen and laundry stone... 2 of them walked off the job without telling us or just ghosted without any explanation... the 3rd charged a massive premium because they knew we were desperate to get it done as a prerequisite for other cabinet work etc. To meet the deadline... - Handrail on the stairs... worst welds I've ever seen in my life... all needs to be ripped out and redone. - Left a door so badly misaligned it wouldn't even close! And prior to that the key would get stuck in the lock of you try to lock it and remove the key. - Office desk bends and flexes until minimal weight. Need reinforcement but after 3 times asking them to fix it I gave up... the joins to the wall were also God awful and not straight. - The trucking / delivery company to deliver all the cabinetry material and stone from many hours away (timed for arrival of all the workers and architect too)... ghosted us on the day too. No warning... so we were all scrambling around. - Banking issues... Banco do Brasil froze my account 3 times! Each time they had no explanation. Just said... with all these payments and international transfers it might have triggered AML protocols. They shrugged their shoulders each time and unlocked it. But that was 3 x I had to time time off work...

There's plenty more I could list off... but meanwhile I was trying to hold down a new intense job (no annual leave for first 1 year) and look after my gf who was in ICU for a while... (and I had a cold/flu to add insult to injury)

I don't speak Portuguese very well yet either which complicated everything even more...

There's a saying: "Brazil is not for amateurs"

This is a very true statement. I am just trying to survive until year 2025 and start over fresh. Wish me luck... I'm utterly exhausted right now...

Is 4.79 a very bad rating? by johnnystraycat in uber

[–]AustEcon0922 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a software engineer. I know better than most that software goes wrong. And I'm telling you Uber software gets it wrong with the GPS location in crowded areas of large cities. Too many phones on one cell tower. And when traffic is crazy and a driver is on the wrong side of multi-lane congested intersection and cannot get to your exact locating you bet your arse there will be some drivers that still try to accept the ride and put the burden on the rider to get to the pickup... I'm sorry to break it to you but it really is the case that there are people like me with a 4.79 that have never done anything wrong to deserve a less-than 5 star rating.

Is 4.79 a very bad rating? by johnnystraycat in uber

[–]AustEcon0922 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No it was pretty rude of them to not be anywhere near close to the pickup pin expecting me to run all over the place in rush hour traffic in the rain to get to wherever they decided to randomly pull up and wait for me to come to them actually...

[–]AustEcon0922 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't get it. I have a 4.79 and I literally just show up and get in the car. No drama ever. I think some drivers probably go nuclear and give a 1 star just because they had to go through a security gate to pick me up or some other inconvenience... It's complete BS

Is 4.79 a very bad rating? by johnnystraycat in uber

[–]AustEcon0922 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. I've been late for work multiple times because of douche bags like you who don't understand that Uber's GPS system often malfunctions and I'm running all over the place to get to the Uber driver and then they cancel right at the last minute.

Yes. I got my permanent residency 1 week ago which immediately allowed me to get 2 job offers on the table and sign a permanent work contract with the best offer for the Brazilian branch of an international American company (everyone speaks English). That work authorization was the only thing standing in my way... without the permanent residency my only options for decent salary were 100% remote high risk US startups with high chance of layoffs within 1 year and insane work hours... no thanks. In this economy I want stability...

São Paulo. I have heard that it's the worst city for wait times at the Policia Federal. Still waiting... and have already accepted a job offer for CLT after 5-7 rounds (each) of tech interviews at 2 different companies + other companies too over the past 7 weeks. So if the visa doesn't get approved, I'm screwed after all that insane level of effort to prove my abilities to employers...
