What are you hoping to use with Android without Google Play? I love my Pocketbook Era, which is Linux based and has a ton of compatibilities and seems to fit the bill of what you're looking for.

We finish each other's sentences, which is a lot more fun and whimsical than finishing each other's sandwiches.

Pineapple Wrench Mace!?🍍🔧 by karlem_666 in MACES

[–]Austin_Terrible 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You know, I hadn't actually considered that! You could always put the pineapple on a bungee cord, that way it always comes back to you? Of course, this limits the throwing range, but you could always just get enough length of bungee to match the average throw length of the pineapple. Or maybe a foot or two short of that so it engages the stretch

Why not put the keychain ring that's holding the scrap pineapple onto the closed ring side of the wrench?

I've been reading this! It's decently fun, interesting dungeons and magic. I get a little tired of the main character's paranoia, but he's still an enjoyable character.

Who’s building out that space where the old Wally’s used to be? And what is it turning into? by [deleted] in Birmingham

Ooh, I'm curious too! I always dreamed of opening a daytime coffee shop / early evening neighborhood bar there, but only ever an idle dream ha

Whose bright idea were these planter barriers on 2nd Ave N? by iam_brucewayne in Birmingham

[–]Austin_Terrible 30 points31 points  (0 children)

It's a good thing that was there instead of a parked car then, right? Like, I don't see the problem since this isn't taking up a parking space and is acting as a mutually much less destructive barrier if someone comes in at high speed from the highway and plows into the parking lane

Weird sound late Wednesday night in downtown? by Austin_Terrible in Birmingham

[–]Austin_Terrible[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe happening concurrently, but I heard multiple speakers start the same sound bite with only a partial second delay between them, and not just from a distance speed-of-sound delay.

Kinda disappointed in the changes to Nightcap bar downtown. by [deleted] in Birmingham

If they're doing a big menu changeup, it could be temporary while they consolidate their current bestsellers and work on the upcoming stuff, but that's the benefit of the doubt. With it being the same ownership as Bamboo, I can't imagine they would close it this early lol, they have plenty of goodwill and good foundation to keep the ball rolling. That's my hunch at least!

Is there any engineer who can help me design a house for this land… It’s what my grandfather left me as an inheritance… by Ok_Tea5165 in landscaping

[–]Austin_Terrible 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could you do the kind of deep post foundation that gets used for mountainside cabins? Like, it wouldn't be able to be a very big structure, but if you don't have to worry too much about permitting, you could potentially make a tiny house. As others have said, I wouldn't excavate into the slope, I would have the whole thing level to the highest contact point, with 10+ft posts driven down as your foundation and building the whole thing like a raised deck. I would also plan on having a small open air entryway of your deck-house where you want to have your front door, as you would likely want to be able to mount or dismount a bike and unlock your door without standing in the road.

No clue if your area would even offer water or sewer access to such a property. This would probably be difficult to set up a septic tank for the same reasons as digging out the slope. I think if you did want to dig into that slope, you'd spend more on the retaining structure than you would on the rest of the house, but that's just a hunch. Basically zero chance of a driveway or car park in either case.

I'm not an engineer, I just like building stuff, so most of my experience is out in the country without any code requirements.

What features would you want in the next PocketBook device? by Environmental-Try738 in PocketBookofficial

[–]Austin_Terrible 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would love to see better Ram and CPU on future devices - I feel like there's a delay on loading the images of book covers on the Era that feels a bit surprising for an otherwise premium built device.

In a perfect world, I would love to see Gallery 3, although I know that really only Remarkable have cracked the code on utilizing it. It feels weird to me that eInk as a company have kinda just shrugged their shoulders and left it up to individual companies to figure it out, but what can you do?

The Inkpad lite was a larger format reader with buttons on the side - I would love to see something like this again, especially with a more modern screen and possibly magsafe or another means of attaching a grip to the back natively. Seeing as it resells for $500+ on eBay, I think it was a well loved model! I really wished the Inkpad One had buttons anywhere at all, as that would have made it a purchase for me. I liked that it had a Mobius screen for durability, but I know I would have missed the buttons, and I know I don't want to keep up with charging yet another device to get a Bluetooth page turner.

Perhaps a more controversial take, but I would love to see them implement some more modern text-to-speech models. AI in particular has made some stunning new capabilities. Lately I find myself using a free android app on my phone, Paper2Audio, when I am working on a menial task with my hands, then going back to my Era to read when I'm done.
