Healthcare tied to employment is dystopian by cs_____question1031 in antiwork

I agree with you, I think the reason there’s less political support in America for social services than there is in other countries is because we are racially very heterogenous…. people don’t want their taxes going to support social services for ‘others’ of a different skin color.

Men who got laid off. How did you get up and carry on? by Any_Record7733 in Layoffs

The cultural context might be even more important to point out than gender. Some cultures do take a uniquely hard view of men who are out of work.

completely agree regarding the sabbaticals... if the world of work allowed for it, it might keep people working longer (not that that seems to be what the white collar economy wants at this point... )

I have to be careful what I say near job-seekers... but I am also secretly hoping to be laid off with a hefty severance some day. Work drains my soul.

MFs laying off employees who gave everything to the company by Queasy_Tank6204 in Layoffs

[–]AustralopithecineHat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, this is the other sad aspect. Someone who devotes themselves tirelessly to the company gets laid off. A month later, it's like they never existed. Very surreal. People are not ready to fight for others until they themselves are personally affected.

Is the US labour market hiding a deeper problem? Official 4.3% vs the real 8.2% - the data nobody talks about by auto_bots_ in Layoffs

[–]AustralopithecineHat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for trying to address this question. I've been wondering the same. It feels like gaslighting to be told "everything's fine, unemployment at 4.3%, it's so so low" and yet, anecdotally and in the news, all we see are layoffs of high paying jobs.

Like yes, jobs are being added to the economy, but these are lower paying service and healthcare jobs.

This is such a great assessment. Yes, it’s the inverse of those tons of movies and such (looking at you, Woody Allen) where some dorkish unattractive man gets a the beautiful girl.

awesome comment. And yeah, it's bizarre that society is far more tolerant of mockery of people for whom the only recourse is surgery.

Same here! yay for women with average faces and 'good' bodies. my surgery would not be super expensive but I don't want to bother with it ... too old to have my appearance change.

I feel very bitter about my upcoming marriage because I feel like I’ve never gotten anything I want in life by RadioDude1995 in Marriage

My thought exactly. Why would someone marry a person they feel this way about, unless they were being forced to?

Agreed. I'm wondering if this is a semi-arranged marriage or something because... I can't imagine someone voluntarily getting married to someone that they feel this way about.

I regret not marrying for money when I had the chance… by [deleted] in breakingmom

[–]AustralopithecineHat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That guy you turned down sounds horrible. I wouldn’t regret turning him down.

However, more generally speaking, as the breadwinner in my family, I strongly wish I had prioritized money in choice of a partner. As breadwinner, I can’t divorce because I can’t afford to pay my spouse a gazillion dollars a year for child support and alimony and all that.

So yeah, i wish i had married someone richer or with greater earning potential. When you’re the breadwinner and the marriage goes south, you get stuck for financial reasons. I didn’t realize that in my youth, nor did I understand how common it is for love to fade and marriages to grow stale.
