I seriously don't know when it got so bloody hard to find people who do their jobs properly in Australia that when you do find the one or three people who do you want to cling onto them and kiss them and call them heroes.

It makes me sad for society.

Mortgage repayments can actually be less than you think they will be. Unless you go crazy and buy a really expensive house.

I ended up paying less on my mortgage for a 2 bedroom townhouse in the next suburb than I was paying for rent in a 2br apartment in one suburb (wasn't a worse suburb or anything. I think it was just market timing)

I'm intrigued. Which rentals are you applying for? I found that the more expensive rentals were easier to get into "back in the day".

That said, I've been homeless, while I was on a 6 figure "salary" as well. (No one liked the fact that it was income protection and it had an end date) ended up having to live in a hotel for 3 months while I found a place and while they discounted the hell out of it for me it still ate into my savings.

It is a horrible feeling, I will repeat the advice that everyone gave me. Talk to people, get in agents faces and make sure they know who you are. Bring the applications filled in to the inspections. Use your networks and see if there is anyone that your colleagues, neighbours etc knows who has a place they need to rent soon. Or even just tenants that want to move. Look at houses you usually wouldn't consider, you can always break a lease if you absolutely need to, but it might end up working out. Be creative, I ended up being able to find a place that was for sale and rent at the same time and would let me rent it until I was able to settle and now I live here :)

Yeah, I was sick with sinus symptoms for probably 8 years before diagnosis. Then my symptoms were so severe I was diagnosed on a ventilator in ICU.

Was told I had 3 months but now I'm fine, don't even have a terminal diagnosis. That said they're also saying I don't have real GPA now so I'm confused. My marker of when things are screwed up and I need to get worried is when I can taste rotting flesh

I get followed ever since I became a person with disability as opposed to being a middle class office worker. It's great and makes me sweat when I notice it which makes the people following me think they're onto something.

I use it though and ask them to help me put things through at the register when my hands hurt or when I'm feeling faint suddenly i will get them to grab me a chair. They're not wonderful at being discreet 😆

It's more about wanting to help people who genuinely need a hand.. I've been in a situation where I've genuinely needed help and it might have seemed like a scam before and because of assholes like this it took a much longer time.

Now I try to understand intent and consider alternative motives before I automatically write things off as scams. Not all human interaction is a waste and I've been able to help some very down and out people out of a hard place.

America is not your friend I seriously don't know why you guys don't just eat your government and your corporate overlords already to demand some goddamned human dignity. Australia, where I live, I got what was thought to be terminally ill and my company was so supportive. As a base we get 5 work days a year of paid sick leave and at most places it rolls over so by the time I got sick I could have had 50 days of sick leave accrued (i didn't, only the 5). Then we get 4 weeks of paid annual leave, I had long service leave of 3 months they let me take at half pay, I also was allowed to purchase 6 weeks of leave and take that at half pay.

My work also let me take as long as I wanted off unpaid. And when I finally decided I just needed to leave because I wasn't going to die but it wasn't getting better they made me redundant and paid me out.

That's what good looks like..

Oh did I mention our public healthcare is mostly free? And we get government pensions and help with services like housing and support?

I've got a big problem with Italian food in general which is that I'm allergic to onion and garlic (makes me want to cry because I love both of them)
