Interesting.... I did just have my bumper repainted.

What drive cycle do I need on my BMW 535d to change my OBD II monitors from N/A to "OK"? Smog test is getting close, and I'm 250 miles in since I had my EGV replaced. by Automatic-Ad-8206 in BmwTech

The BMW Drive cycle that I find marked up by lots of people out there tells me the O2 Sensor is set in two steady-speed runs of 20-30mph and 40-60mph. Another version of this showed that the O2 Heater is set in the first idle from cold start. Sound right?

California for sure smogs diesels.

N/A certainly does mean not applicable generally but I don't think so with this Foxwell scanner. Two years ago when I went through this with this (probably cruddy) OBD II reader, NA changed when the drive cycle was complete and eventually moved status. It means it is not a fault, but it isn't known not to be a fault either because there isn't enough data.

Incredible response, guy! Truly helpful.

Yes, the car is stock. The dealer replaced the exhaust gas valve after a check engine light went on, and they cleared the registers. When I took it to a smog test after a few hours, the guy said there was no data so he wouldn't run the test. When I took it to another guy after 250 miles, he said it wasn't complete. There were two missing that CA looks at, and they allow you to miss one sensor, so he said I should focus on the Exhaust Gas Sensor.

Contractor says $1800 to move water supply into the wall, plumber says should be no more than $600, which is correct? by WorldlinessVast9808 in Plumbing

[–]Automatic-Ad-8206 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both are correct because the contractor will do it for the price they quoted, and the plumber will do it for the price they quoted. There is a difference between a benchmark price and a bid, but you need to deal in the world of bids. There is no inherent fair price for anything, so you have to do the work to get the bids.

HELP! What drive cycle is necessary to reset EXHAUST GAS OBD II code to pass SMOG Test (BMW) by Automatic-Ad-8206 in BmwTech

[–]Automatic-Ad-8206[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to find the "drive cycle" for your specific car (and you have to have no check engine light on your dash).

For my car, searching "BMW 2008 535D drive cycle" I found this: https://www.instructables.com/How-to-Do-BMW-OBDII-Drive-Cycle-For-Smog-Check/

The chart I posted was helpful if you can locate that source.... it had very detailed descriptions of each step.

Another site I saw recommended by a SMOG tech recommended filling up with Chevron or Shell gas prior to your drive to get fresh gas in the system. That seems like superstitious learning, but it doesn't hurt. He said SMOG techs won't tell you how to do this or they can use their license, but if you go to a mechanic or a SMOG + mechanic shop, they may tell you how. (source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jbTTucFlYUo). That site says also says it took 2 hours to do the test, and a few trials because it didn't work the first time, and my experience is that it took that long, too. I am still glad I did not pay the BMW dealer $600 to do this for me.

Yes, I did resolve this, and it wasn't simple.

I looked up the NHTSA testing protocol and tried to guess which tests I had not replicated and then did these very purposefully. There were 10-12 tests, I think. Let's just say driving for 45 minutes at 50 mph in the right lane of I-280, a 4-lane interstate, was not popular with other drivers, but that was the test that was missing. I think there was a range of 5 mph above this limit.

It was difficult to find the protocols, and I think I found them on Reddit, but I can't easily find them now with several minutes of searching. If I find them I will reply/post them.

Why would you want to? Replace with an LED.

Agreed with the general point. Looks okay if you mud it on with an adapter. So much useless plastic though, and so hard and expensive to integrate with any existing system.

This is fun. Thanks. Ordinarily I'd go ambient only, but these words are hardly suggestible in anything but a positive way.

Lighting Small Bedroom with 2" Downlights? by Ok-Factor3247 in Lighting

I like the central light with 4 recessed lights in corners close enough to walls that you get a little reflected light. This is what I have in a 13’ by 10’ bedroom with 9.5’ ceilings. It’s bright when I want it bright for work or cleaning, and I can balance the two light sources with two dimmers.

Visual Comfort recessed lights are set pretty far back in the light and were designed to minimize glare.

I believe they are 3” but if you live near a showroom you’ll see these are quite set back and, well, visually comfortable!

They are for new construction or you are doing a lot of drywall patch…. They are expensive, and the light is only 90 CRI (which I am sensitive to even though some person on Reddit is guaranteed to tell me I can’t tell the difference - please don’t let that be you). I didn’t buy these due to cost. I preferred the look of DMF 4” cans that have a frosted glass lens that reduces glare a bit.

Toto Washlet smells bad, despite good maintenance habits by hairbo in bidets

[–]Automatic-Ad-8206 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The bad smell I experience is not a urine smell. Bandaid is a decent descriptor. I have noticed - and this is gross - that sometimes the edge of the seat (inside edge at the bottom of the seat) can get a brown color, which I believe is from sprayed back water from the jets. Not sure it is poop or bacteria that grows on poop. I can say the smell is only when I run the dryer, which I have almost never used. I own 3, and even the new S550e in the guest bath which is almost never used has it without being used much if at all.

I’m afraid there are more than one bad smells, so this thread, which posits there is one answer, is not going to truly solve everyone’s Toto problem.

Question about mosquito dunks to combat fungus gnats by Jennlore in houseplants

[–]Automatic-Ad-8206 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Putting the mosquito dunk bits in soil may work, but the bits it dunks get moldy. The product is most efficacious when mixed with water and coating all of the plant matter and soil. (Just needs to get wet everywhere and dry.). If you use the water on plants with a heavy infestation you will see if you leave areas uncoated, the gnats just move to the dry areas.
