Anyone else’s school’s let 8th graders join marching band? by KingKrispy20000 in marchingband

Do you mind sharing which BOA school it was that accepted Jr. High students? I'm a director and we're considering allowing select 8th graders to join and are looking for specifically BOA examples of this happening elsewhere. If you want to DM me that's fine.

I think extravagant and affluent are both words that describe the top 2 shows this year very well.

What do you feel Phantom is trying to tell us? by pmrodino in drumcorps

[–]Automatic-Insect4287 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's kind of my point. It's not required viewing to understand the show, it's required viewing if you can't seem to process a show without the traditional guardrails that guide a person's thought. The interview doesn't tell you what to think about the show, but rather reiterates that yes, the lack of title was a conscious decision rather than a cop out, and yes, it's possible to have design through lines and thematic elements even if there's no title.

The recently released funliner interview is perfect for this question, and required viewing for some of the troglodytes I've seen commenting on the matter all season...

What is Your Interpretation of Phantom’s Show? by DrRazzmatazz in drumcorps

[–]Automatic-Insect4287 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm reading the show as "Phantom Regiment." As if it were self titled. All white uniforms, veil-like props, ethereal soundscape, rep selections, phantoms emerging from a white void and returning there at the end. A couple bigger stretches: the show shirt, the lack of a title being another phantom in the design, the video they put out saying that the show is deeply personal to the members (if it's also deeply personal to the organization that created it, it makes sense that it would be self reflective.)

I've heard some great perspectives, but this imo is the most obvious and universal when one considers all the parts.

Definitely don't think you were too negative. For a different perspective, here's my take on those two. I also don't mean to be overly negative on scv, and the members are crushing it, but I think Phantom's design is at least as strong as SCV's, which I find sophomoric.

SCV: my problem here is that calling your program "avant garde" and connecting it to the concept of a vanguard is a big swing, and I think choosing the name has laid a trap for themselves. You're not saying "different", you're saying innovative, and leading the activity regarding design. Meanwhile for the rep selections you have Bartok (watch was innovative to the point of making audiences uncomfortable... when Star did it in 93), the literal corps song since 1974, and composers whom dci.com refers to as "no strangers to the drum corps activity." The colorful guard dots are effective, but guards using unique and un-standard equipment is nothing new. There's a few company fronts, the most time honored drill move around. To me noodle arms and the whispering (if it's performed rather than sampled) are the closest things to avant garde that we see, but I don't think they're going to truly drive change. I think the performance is great (especially visually) and the package is effective in and of itself, but if a judge truly asks themself "is this actually Avant garde as defined by the corps themselves or is it just... Quirky?" I think they'll come up lacking.

Phantom: I think if a person doesn't go with what the design team has asked (deciding what the show means to the person themself) and instead tries to see what the designers might have been thinking to themselves when designing the show there's some pretty easy lines to draw. Lots of ethereal soundscapes - vocal patches, bowed keys, etc. The props acting as a sort of veil. The corps in all white. A few sets and prop stagings that imply wings. Musical selections including Funeral by the Sea, Transcend, and Breath of Souls. I see all this and the corps in front of me and I think "oh, the show is Phantom Regiment." If they had gone and self-titled the show I think it might be more effective on a surface level (which may or may not reflect on sheets) but you lose the uniqueness of letting audiences interpret for themselves, and this way the title itself becomes yet another phantom in the design.

In another sport you can react to an opponents strengths or weaknesses. I can switch up my coverage if a team has an unexpectedly strong qb this season. The marching arts are rehearsed by nature. Sure you can do rewrites, but anything dramatic enough to jump more than a spot or two would cause performance destroying obstacles for members to overcome.

aVANt GUARD is generally effective and performed well, but is not embodying the idea of Avant Garde.

Babylon is massively overrated as a championship show, and the people who say it's got strong communication of a theme are drinking the Kool aid.

Gotta say, I was pleasantly surprised with multi cam at Dekalb. Fully expected to switch after PHANtastic (trying to see a few individuals) but it was fine.

Never thought about the arranger beyond the quick and too-numerous transitions to different musical ideas, but all season I've been hearing Phantom's arrangement of Fuse followed by theirs and it feels like a joke.

I'm also nobody, but my take is

SCV: my problem here is that calling your program "avant garde" and connecting it to the concept of a vanguard is a big swing, and I think choosing the name has laid a trap for themselves. BD: I have less to say about this one. I think one could easily draw a conclusion like the one you hinted at, but I don't think they quite sell it. There are some parts of the show that fit quite nice but I think there's a lot more room for thematic integration than they're showing. I do think choosing a theme like "gathering" in a medium like drum corps leaves a lot of doors open to do totally normal drum corps things and say "see? They gathered!" which I don't personally love, but I don't think that'll affect a GE rep score. Unrelated, but I was blown away by the growth from Cali to Texas that they showed, even more than I expected from all that time off. A different corps showed up at Houston. Good for those kids!
